2010 – February 2011, March–September 2011, September 2011 – February 2012 |
The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:
We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Grandiose (submissions), Stone (submissions), Eisfbnore (submissions), Canada Hky (submissions) and MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.
In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.
A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi Phil. In the last line of this edit, HJ has asked for checks of a few things he's changed. The changes needing checks are marked in his edit summaries in the history of the article. They all look fine to me, in that I think what he's changed them to are indeed the meaning intended, but I wanted someone more familiar with the material to check them over as well. Could you have a look, and reply here/there/somewhere? Thanks --Demiurge1000 (talk) 09:33, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm frustrated too ... I see a lot of activity in aviation articles, but we're kind of stuck until we get more aviation people working on each other's articles, and that just doesn't seem to be happening in Milhist's A-class review. You asked me to ask people to get moving ... but I've found that doesn't work well on Wikipedia; people get interested when they get interested, so the only things that seem to work well around here are hard work and patience. My two cents is: try putting some of your articles up at Aviation's A-class review (and I'll help with reviews), and try helping other aviation people out with their articles, for instance, articles that are up for GAN ... that might inspire them to help you out. - Dank (push to talk) 14:28, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Hello. The minor planet articles are listed by the hundred and groups of ten of them are concatenated into longer lists. As to their notability, outside of potentially hazardous and trans-Neptunian objects, most smaller minor planets, particularly those of the main belt, are, I agree, not of great importance. Many are technically unremarkable yet still have received names; the names are arbitrary designations which make reference easier. The names are also primarily up to the whims of the discoverer(s). The page on common article deletion discussion outcomes says only
Under these guidelines I have been operating to complete Wikipedia's record on the minor planets. --Merovingian (T, C, L) 03:12, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I feel like I'm fighting a war with bots here - and they wonder why newbies are leaving in droves! The two articles have entirely different scopes - the (suburb) one is focused on one small bit (in geographic terms) and has a decidedly more local focus, whilst the main article is focused on the whole thing. I'd actually written this on the talk page before you went through. This is becoming increasingly standard for places in Australia - eg Perth, Western Australia and Perth (suburb). The situation's been rectified now but could you please look at the settings for whatever tool you're using to identify these things - I mean, it doesn't bother me all too much as a going-on-6-year editor, but it would probably stop newbies from wanting to contribute. It's bad form to ask five questions at a single RfA. We're not testing candidates over every single little detail. Not to mention that your questions are vague in what they're asking for. Are you going to oppose if they disagree with you on Q10, or if they don't write down every single mental process in Q9? Q12 is especially misleading—do you want them to say histmerge because they read it as a copy-paste move, or did you mean that it was copied from an external source?
If you want to ask questions at RfA, please limit yourself to the one or two most important ones and ensure that you are wording them well. That is, unless you want to trip up the candidate, in which case, just don't bother asking questions at all. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 19:05, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Your speedy deletion request had been dealt with before I logged in again. If you read the article you will see that it cites two eminent sources, one of which states (as quoted) that King was one of the ten best players of his day in the 1750s. That underlines his notability. If you have doubts about the sources, and this applies to other projects also, I suggest you raise a question on the WikiProject talk page before turning to the deletion process. ----Jack | talk page 18:10, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
We appear to have a problem in that you seem to be removing cats quicker than I can add them? not sure why you think multi-engine is a parent cat it has always been used for aircraft with more than one engine. If it is a parent cat then what do you suggest we use for twin-engined aircraft? On another note you are adding the introduced in cats which I understand we said we would not use on aircraft, thanks. Hi Sp33dy, Hope this finds you well. I'm a Storyteller on the fundraising team at the Wikimania Foundation. In preparation for the 2011 fundraiser this November-December, I'm interviewing Wikipedians who contribute significantly to the projects. In the past, we've relied pretty heavily on Jimmy to carry the fundraising burden, and while his appeals have done very well, he alone doesn't represent the multitude of content creators on Wikipedia. I'm curious if you would like to interview with me? I would hope to speak with you for about 60 minutes and would ask you a number of questions about your personal experiences editing on Wikipedia and about its impact more generally. If you are inclined, please email mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Thanks! Matthew (WMF) 23:51, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Phil, Thanks for your feedback regarding my withdrawal from the coordinator election. I appreciate your candor and see the truth of statement. It is quite true that I have not been participating in the project discussions as much as I could. Regardless, thanks for the feedback.LeonidasSpartan (talk) 07:37, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
This is a note to let the main editors of Northrop YF-23 know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on September 30, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 30, 2011. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
The Northrop YF-23 was a single-seat, twin-engine fighter aircraft designed for the United States Air Force (USAF). In the 1980s, the USAF began looking for a replacement for its fighter aircraft, especially to counter the USSR's advanced Su-27 and MiG-29. Several companies submitted design proposals; the USAF selected proposals from Northrop and Lockheed. Northrop teamed with McDonnell Douglas to develop the YF-23, while Lockheed, Boeing and General Dynamics developed the YF-22. The YF-23 was stealthier and faster, but less agile than the competition. After a four-year development and evaluation process, the YF-22 was announced the winner in 1991 and entered production as the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. The U.S. Navy considered using one of the ATF aircraft types to replace the F-14, but later canceled these plans. The two YF-23 prototypes were on exhibit in museums as of 2009. (more...)

Discussions of our plans for the coming year will no doubt begin in the next few days. Responded on my talk page and also wanted to note that I have looked over the article. It may sound strange, but I have always made it a point NOT to look too much into the KC-10 article before because I always knew that if I did, I would want to work on it (regardless of whether or not I actually had time to.) It definitely needs some work, but I'm too tired tonight to really quantify that thought. First thing that DOES pop out is the "incidents" section which I have already boldly removed. The KC-10 has had a very accident-free track record, but even if it didn't, I don't see the need for such a section. We don't have an "incidents" section for the Honda Accord for every time someone dies behind the wheel of one. Unless there is a VERY notable reason why the aircraft itself, through a reason such as design flaw, contributed to someone's death, I fail to see a reason to specifically examine it within the article. I will look at it some more tomorrow. Trusilver 06:53, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Miyagawa (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

All the above are in the collapsible section A-Class review/reappraisal closure instructions for coordinators on the A-Class review page. BTW, got a feeling you may not have put a result or signed another ACR you closed (perhaps closed w/o consensus) not long ago but I forgot to mention it at the time, so you might want to check back and add the result and fake the signature timestamp to when you actually closed it... Hi Sp33dyphil, I appreciate your vigilance, but in general before tagging to death an article minutes after birth, please allow at least a few days for the author(s) to develop it. Benevolo is one of the most notable architectural and urban historians of the 20th century, and has articles on five other Wikipedias. In my limited time I was simply starting to close a gap in Wikipedia's coverage bias. I'm afraid that this kind of quick tagging discourages contributions. --Elekhh (talk) 23:26, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)An article that is going to take 'a few days' to develop should be developed in user space where it will avoid the danger of being deleted, and this is what we should be encouraging users to do. . The number of new articles that might get developed, is so great that there is a risk that not tagging them will leave them forgotten, and undeveloped by their author. Common sense will tell us on a case-by-case basis if we should wait 15 minutes oe 1 hour before tagging an A1 or an A3, or even delete them instantly. Other tags, if applied quickly enough, may draw the creator's attention to the problems (as it did with Elekhh) while they are still online and logged in. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:05, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
@Kudpung, while we're at it, can you explain to me why my CSD tag (A9) on On the Old Fall River Line was rejected? Sp33dyphil "Ad astra" 05:19, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Incidentally, with exactly fifty articles created, Elekhh might well be a good choice to have the autopatrolled userright. This would save time for new page patrollers, and (in instances like the above) for Elekhh as well. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:29, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sp33dyphil!
Congratulations! Your application to join the Global Education Program as an Online Ambassador has been accepted. The steps you need to take now, a few things you need to read, are bolded.
When you get a chance, please add your username to the official list of Online Ambassadors and add a profile for yourself here (which helps match Online Ambassadors with classes in their areas of interest).
Here are some things you should know to help you get started:
The main role of for an Online Ambassador is to join the "pod" for one or more participating classes. The pod is the team of people helping a class of students contribute effectively to Wikipedia, consisting of the course instructor, the local Campus Ambassadors who will work with the class in person, the Online Ambassadors who work with the class online, and the Regional Ambassador for the pod who will check in periodically with the pod to make sure everything is going well.
A prototypical pod might look something like this:
(That's an idealization, but it gives you an idea of the spectrum of people in each of the roles in the program.)
The expections for an Online Ambassador in a pod (and what you can expect from other pod members) are laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between pod members. In short the role of the Online Ambassador is to:
To join a pod, go to the MOU signup page, which lists the courses for the current term, and leave your signature in one of the Online Ambassador slots for the pod you want to join.
You can also help as an Online Ambassador outside of your role as a pod member, anywhere you see students who could use help. Feedback on the substance (rather than style and formatting) of student articles, in particular, is always a need.
If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup. The latter is the main help channel for the program, where students and instructors come from time to time in search of live help.
Wikipedia Ambassadors are expected to follow the Wikipedia Ambassadors Principles. Please review them.
There are three main places for news, updates and discussion about Wikipedia Ambassadors and the Global Education Program:
Newsletters about the program, or messages for Online Ambassadors particularly, may be delivered to your talk page on occasion.
Thanks for volunteering as a Wikipedia Ambassador! If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks for doing some of the work on this. For FACs only (I'm not sure if anyone cares about the other categories), please mention the name of the article that was or wasn't promoted in your edit summary. Also, at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Arado E.381/archive2, it's easier to keep track of comments if each new review starts their review with something bolded ... Hi Sp33dyphil. I recently finished correcting the formatting of several citations on the Play Misty for Me article. In doing so, I included in the citations all of the relevant information pertaining to the sources (books). There is also a section in the article titled Bibliography which has the same information about those books. After completing all of the work on fixing the citations I decided to remove the Bibliography section because, after my work, the reference section included all of the same information.
However, right after I finished this work, you undid all of it, and sent a message to me saying I removed content without specifying a reason. When in fact I entered this, "removed Bibliography sections as it is unnecessary now that citations are correct" as the reason. If you think that the Bibliography section needs to stay, then it can stay. But can you at least revert the page back to where all of my work on the citations is done? Best, DaffyBridge (talk) 00:21, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
Just a note that I've reopened this AFD and undeleted the article. The G4 deletion was a mistake because the first AFD was about a hockey player. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 21:57, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
On 16 October 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tupolev Tu-142, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Soviet Tupolev Tu-142 (pictured) maritime patrol aircraft was developed in response to the American UGM-27 Polaris submarine-launched ballistic missile? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tupolev Tu-142.You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. Greetings. I see you're attempting to get this user to put the brakes on, too. I've left a message on their talk page asking them about maybe finding a cached copy of this site instead of simply deleting it wholesale. The last two times he's deleted something I've left edit summaries asking him to do so and to check his talk page. I'm hoping he sees it soon, because if he doesn't, I'm tempted to start reporting his edits as being disruptive. --McDoobAU93 00:32, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
You've templated me twice--have you read my edit summaries or looked at the edit history to which I've referred? I'm attempting to remove original research, in which a user has been using Wikipedia to push their theories with a neologism. 99.137.209.90 (talk) 00:42, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi. It looks like you have been busy doing good things by patrolling for vandalism, but I fear that your reverts at Commoditization are having the effect of fanning the flames in a content dispute. The user you have been reverting has been explaining his/her edits in edit summaries. The problem is that they need to discuss the matter on the talk page instead. Please restrain yourself there -- and encourage talk page discussion. Thanks! --Orlady (talk) 04:43, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

I think your complete removal of material posted by user:173.13.137.221 was a bit hasty. In principle his edits were fine! At most you could have placed a few [citation needed] tags. What he wrote however was factually correct, and already covered by the given links, it certainly wasn't vandalism. I have asked the user to register, become aquainted to the rules and regulations of WP, and then try again. Mahjongg (talk) 13:07, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

There's not really too much which can be done. Try adding it to User:Tony1/FAR urgents and Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and ask on the appropriate WikiProject talk page- this may bring in some reviews. I do not understand why you said i removed content. I added several colons whidh needed to be added. I added italic to the show The Five which I believe is needed also. I did move one segment (art auction) which is no longer daily because people started to win bids for the drawings and then not send in the money, so the show stopped doing that segment. Did you not see that I only moved this segment and did not remove the content? They complained on the show about people winning the bid but not paying, so they then stopped having the art auctions. I did remove the one word "progressive" from in front of Media Matters and the bolding that was placed on Media Matters because that much detail along with the footnote and unneeded bolding seemed to be promoting media matters on the Red Eye page for unknown reasons. I don't think it is necessary to go into that much detail about media matters on Red Eye page, when simply saying Memdia Matters will do for encyclopedia purposes on Red Eye, don't you agree? Is that the content you were referring to that I removed, the single word "progressive"? If that's the removed content you are referring to, then why did you get rid of all my many other helpful edits I made to improve the page, including 3 references which I added with great trouble? Couldn't you have left my helpful edits and just reinserted the one word "progressive" if you wanted that unnecessary qualifier to stay there? Or do you consider all these other edits not helpful to the page either? As far as I can see, there are lots of edits made all over the place with some actually removing real content without any comment about the edit as to why they did that edit and they are not changed they way you did to me? Please explain.--172.162.22.221 (talk) 07:26, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors
The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters. |

The 2011 WikiCup is now over, and our new champion is Hurricanehink (submissions), who joins the exclusive club of the previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009) and Sturmvogel_66 (2010). The final standings were as follows:
Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.
No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.
Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls. It's been a pleasure to work with you all this year, and, whoever's taking part in and running the competition in 2012, we hope to see you all in January! Now I can't get page sizes any more on article sections by clicking "Page size" in section-edit-preview mode, and am unable to delete the duplicate-links script from my .js page to see if one may be interfering with the other. Hello, I am writing from WikiProject Barnstar Awarding. As a member of the project, I thought you may be interested in one of our new feature - a live news feed. Formally, any project news was displayed on the project page and any important messages (like this one) had to be idividualy delivered. We now, however, have a new feature - a news feed. The way this works is by the project having a news page (which can be found here). Users then place the following on their talk page
((Wikipedia:WikiProject Barnstar Awarding/News))
News will then be updated on your talk page (or anywhere else you decided to place this template). Please note that the new messages template will not be shown as news is updated.
We hope that you will help support this new feature and will add the template to your user space. Now this feature is in place, messages adressed to the whole WikiProject will no longer be individualy delivered.

So I see you improved on what I wrote in this article. I appreciate any help, and I'm looking for people to fix up the article again. I know there needs to be a section on the radio show's content, but the best source seems to be an article written in 1997, and I put what's there under "history". Some of that is probably valid information for a content section. And some of what's in that source is ... not exactly G-rated. I didn't even want to touch it even though I know Wikipedia is not censored.GeorgeFather (talk • contribs) 17:40, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 backlog elimination drive update
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 46 people sign up for this drive so far, and 28 have copy edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't joined, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: We are making great progress in our goal of clearing out the oldest articles (April, May, and June 2010) from the queue. There are 122 articles left in those categories, which compares very favorably with the 281 that were present at the close of the September drive. We have reduced the 2010 backlog by 184 articles so far. Coordinator elections: The term of our second tranche of coordinators will be running out at the end of the year, and we will be accepting nominations for new coordinators early in December. The election will likely run in the last two weeks of December. Please consider helping out by nominating yourself or someone else in the Guild as one of our coordinators. The commitment is for a six-month term. Thanks. Your drive coordinators – Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02 and SMasters |

Whack! You've been whacked with a wet trout. Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly. |
You have been trouted for: touchiness
Sorry, I had to slap you at your editor feedback and at Mallman's page.
I really meant what I said about you being one of the BEST new editors. Contributing content (info out of books) on high view topics is the most important thing at Wiki.
I meant the criticism as well. When someone gives you help, you should not mouth off to them. I know you are touchy about your age and don't like getting reprimanded. So, please don't take it too hard. But criticism stands.
I hope you will keep learning how to write better. Dig in and do some work. (Have you finished the Tony exercises yet?)
P.s. A330 is a damned good article GA++! ;~)
P.s.s. I promised not to IP edit anymore...but I saw your note and just wanted to reach out in a positive manner.
P.s.s.s. Didn't leave cause of you. Or FA. Different concerns.
P.s.s.s.s. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy! (visited once and backpacked the east coast. Amazing land. Noosa, Byron Bay, etc. etc. etc.)

Hi there! I thought you might be interested in WikiProject Wikify's December Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive. We'll be trying to reduce the backlog size by over 1,000 articles and we need your help! Hard-working participants in the drive will receive awards for their contributions, including a brand new one for the single largest wikified article! All you have to do is put an asterisk next to the largest article you've wikified, and coordinators will check its wordcount after the drive ends. If you have a spare moment, please join and wikify an article or tell your friends. Thanks! Note: The drive starts December 1, and you can sign up today! |

This is a note to let the main editors of McDonnell XF-85 Goblin know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 6, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 6, 2011.
The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin was an American prototype fighter aircraft conceived during World War II by McDonnell Aircraft. It was intended to be carried in and deployed from the bomb bay of the giant Convair B-36 bomber as a parasite fighter. The XF-85's intended role was to defend bombers from hostile interceptors, a need demonstrated during World War II. Two prototypes were constructed before the program was terminated. The XF-85 was a response to a United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) requirement for a fighter to be carried within the Northrop XB-35 and B-36, then under development. This was to address the limited range of existing interceptor aircraft compared to the greater range of new bomber designs. The XF-85 was a diminutive jet aircraft featuring a distinctive egg-shaped fuselage and a forked-tail stabilizer design. The prototypes were built and underwent testing and evaluation in 1948. Flight tests showed promise in the design, but the aircraft's performance was inferior to the jet fighters it would have been facing in combat, and there were difficulties in docking. The XF-85 was swiftly canceled, and the prototypes were thereafter relegated to museum exhibits. (more...)

Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 backlog elimination drive report
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We would like to thank all who participated in this drive. Here is the end-of-drive report.
There were 48 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 35 participated. Thank you to everyone who helped reduce the size of the backlog!
During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 232 articles, or by about 6%. This is a two percent increase from our September drive, when we copy edited 4% of the backlog. We were successful in our primary goal of clearing the oldest three months—March, April, and May 2010—from the queue. Thanks to all who helped copy edit these difficult articles. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 5086 articles, or by about 61%. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.
The term of our second tranche of coordinators has run out, and we will be accepting nominations from December 5, 00:01 UTC to December 15, 23:59 UTC. If you or any other member of the Guild of Copy Editors wishes to be a coordinator, add your name to this page along with a statement describing why you believe you should be a coordinator for the Guild. You must be able to commit to a six month term. Thanks! Once again, thank you for participating in the Guild's November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Our next drive will be in January, and we hope to see you there! Your drive coordinators – Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02 and SMasters |

As you are listed as one of the main editors of McDonnell_XF-85_Goblin, I wanted to let you know about a new template that was added to the talk page. The stable version template is used to mark a stable version of the article, as a measure that combats edit rot, the deterioration of formerly good articles after they stop being supported, and is as well an option for people to access a version of the page that is less likely to be plagued by vandalism and other problems. Feel free to check it out on the template page. This does not change how the article itself is viewed or edited, and as the article evolves and things change, the stable version may of course be updated by simply replacing the permanent link in the template (it is stable, but not fixed). Congratulations on making the front page! Falconusp t c 19:08, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Where you find a source and the copyvio is obvious you may wish to consider tagging for G12 speedy rather than tagging as a copypaste. This would be particularly useful because, at the moment, due to a broken bot copypaste tagged articles are not being listed at WP:CP and so are often going overlooked. I have began a restructuring of WikiProject History's Review Department, which I have come to realize, after discussions and feedback, will be the most active part of any W.P. History reincarnation. I'll be unavailable until January 1st, due to the holiday season, but should be around quite a bit after that. DCItalk 01:10, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

I could be wrong, but based on User talk:Crisco 1492, I think there may be an issue with template:GOCEtb. I was scrolling down the page and noticed that you seemed to have placed this template on his page out of chronological order, because it was dated for today but up with November's posts. So I checked the history and you're not in it for today. I check the template again, thinking I'm missing something, and notice both your post and mine (each using this template) have the same time stamp.
It's gotta be one of three things: 1) A bug in the template, 2) A bug in my browser, 3) A bug in my brain. Can you check and see if it's rendering the same for you? Thanks, ❇Zoë Alkaia ❇ 05:49, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I figured out the problem. The template code includes template:Currentdate, so every time a page the template is posted to is loaded or purged, it updates with the current date and time. I'm not sure if I can fix it; templates have never been my thing. ❇Zoë Alkaia ❇ 05:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.
This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list. Please direct any questions towards the judges, or on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn (talk) and The ed17 (talk) 17:56, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Hey Sp33dy. You seem to be the go-to guy for the aviation project, and I was wondering if you think the article Valentich disappearance falls under the project's scope (it's essentially an aircraft disappearance/disaster). I'm thinking of polishing it up for GA and A-Class reviews in the future and I'd like to know if it belongs to a project with serious members, since sourcing is likely to be contentious and pretty out-there, and it's probably going to need stern assessing in light of that. And congrats on T2, by the way! Probably my third favourite 90s film with Robert Patrick playing a bad guy opposite a huge action star (that maybe doesn't say much). WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!
The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.
A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.
We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.
A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Congrats on the T2 GA. 85,000 people per month come to see it. 100 times the viewership of median GA.
Not an easy topic either, with the sourcing and the different aspects. Good job!!!

Hey-- I won't remove the PROD unless others agree it should be removed. I hope I'm not causing any trouble in my editing, some parts of wikipedia I know very well, some parts I'm still only semi-familiar with, but if you see me off track, just shout.
I've added another link to another incident covered by a source independent of the subject-- this time in 2012. I think this brings it up to speed but i'm not a big stub guy usually, so let me know if I'm still off. HectorMoffet (talk) 05:44, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

I guess not. The article/list looks well-constructed and you received three supports for your work. Some articles seem to fast-track during the review process and some procrastinate until they turn green. MisterBee1966 (talk) 08:14, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
We're allowed to use sources when creating images. As long as the work was produced essentially de novo, there isn't a problem. If you look at academic textbooks, you'll often find that works are produced "after Suchandsuch". If you find new evidence, make sure to notify Commons as well. "The Military history A-Class medal" from EyeSerene 474765006
Hi, Philip! As you probably know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JMathewson (WMF) (talk • contribs) 01:01, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 backlog elimination drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Participation 45 people signed up for this drive this time; of these, 35 participated. This is similar to the number of editors who helped out in November. Thanks to all who participated! Barnstars will be distributed in the near future. Progress report Recent drives have been focusing on the oldest three months in the backlog. During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—July, August, and September 2010—from the queue, and there are less than 300 articles remaining from 2010. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy editing at this time for other reasons. The ((GOCEreviewed)) tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators. Thank you for participating in the January 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy edit drive will be in March. Your drive coordinators – The Utahraptor talk, S Masters (talk), Diannaa (Talk), Stfg (Talk), Sp33dyphil (talk), and Dank (talk) |

Yep, I've had a couple of lists featured on DYK. Most recently List of Queens Park Rangers F.C. seasons, and before that List of Scotland national football team hat-tricks, U.S. state dog breeds and List of Best in Show winners of Crufts. However I did have one turned down, which was List of San Marino national football team results. The reason for that failure was because the reviewer decided that the prose portion of it mirrored information already available on other articles and therefore wasn't "new" to fulfill the DYK requirements. I think that's the key point, is that you need to make sure that the prose is unique (or from a unique angle compared to the other articles). Miyagawa (talk) 08:52, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Sp33dyphil. I have recently done some work consolidating our mailing list into a central location to facilitate using EdwardsBot for the mail-out of our newsletters. I was wondering if you have time to help update the list by removing any inactive editors? What I was thinking is that anyone who has not edited in a year or longer should be removed from the mailing list. Could you help out by checking the editors from User:Dtgriffith through User:Levalley and removing any inactive editors from the list? Any duplicates can also be removed. If you don't have time please let me know and I will reassign that block. Thanks in advance, -- Dianna (talk) 14:00, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey! :D Do you remember how I did the Canberra Capitals and took every player on the current squad to WP:DYK? I'm drafting articles about the current Australia women's national water polo team 2012 Summer Olympics squad on my user space. I'm hoping to take these articles to WP:DYK in a week or two. (Trying to get pictures for the articles first.) If you could help improve the article drafts in my user space in preparation for eventually moving them to the main space, that would be fantastic. The articles I'm working on are:
| class="col-break col-break-2" |
They are all properly cited. They need help fixing the grammar, the flow, the organisation and possibly with information box info. If you can help improve them in my user space before they are eventually moved over and nominated, I would be happy to help give you credit on the DYK nomination. :) --LauraHale (talk) 02:39, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors
The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their March 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate the remaining 2010 articles from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, Stfg, and Coordinator emeritus SMasters. 19:53, 20 February 2012 (UTC) To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list. |

Hi. When you recently edited McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Stealth (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).
