Meanwhile, something special did happen in 476: Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus, ending the Western Roman Empire and beginning the Middle Ages. Putting the start of the Middle Ages at AD 500 while the Western Roman Empire fell at AD 476 is a gap of 24 years. In that year, people just went on their normal lives as usually as any other year.
