Surrey Wildlife Trust[edit]

Nominator(s): Dudley Miles (talk) 10:06, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is the latest in my nominations of wildlife trusts and is in the same format as FLs such as Suffolk and Kent. Dudley Miles (talk) 10:06, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comments
  • "8,000 hectares " convert. (Source says "more than 7000" anyway).
  • "In 2017 it had " shouldn't that come before the previous sentence?
  • "over 100" -> "more than 100"
  • "an income of £5.5 million and expenditure of £5 million" source says income=5.4m, exp=5.3m.
  • Looks like it's worth checking all these claims against current sources.
  • The discrepancies are because the SWT was showing 2017 figures when I cited but has since updated with a lower area and 2018 income and expenditure. Unfortunately, archiving did not work on this site. Dudley Miles (talk) 14:10, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 8 doesn't provide data on the population of Surrey.
  • The source provides a link to a pdf with the figure. I linked to the parent because linking direct to the pdf child does not work. However, I see that I rounded down in error from 1.19 million to 1.1 and I have corrected this. Dudley Miles (talk) 14:10, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'll read the notes in due course. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:11, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on the notes

  • What's an "alder swamp"?
  • " Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty." is a sea of blue.
  • I imagine if you link oak and birch you should link conifer.
    Done. Dudley Miles (talk) 21:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • "include many rare and scarce species" but you don't mention any of them?
    Done. Dudley Miles (talk) 21:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • "The site is also very important for invertebrates, with sixty-four rare or scarce species" feels like you're repeating a bit of this...
  • I think it is worth mentioning the invertebrates specifically and I have added examples. Dudley Miles (talk) 21:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The areas in the list appear to be rounded to the nearest whole hectare, I should note that, as your current note says they're taken from the Wildlife Trust website, but not directly.
  • The note says that they are taken from the SWT website (directly) unless otherwise stated. This is because the SWT does not give a figure for Crooksbury Hill so I have used the Woodland Trust figure. SWT figures are given in whole numbers of hectares.
  • What's "green hay"?
  • In the context it means cut grass and other plant matter and I have revised. Dudley Miles (talk) 21:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • "by Mrs Underdown in memory of her husband in 1987" cool but we don't know who Mrs Underdown is, so is her name relevant, or (as I've seen) it would be common to say something like "by a Mrs Underdown"...
  • I prefer to keep this. It explains the name of the site and "a Mrs Underdown" sounds to me rather dismissive. Dudley Miles (talk) 21:45, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I take it to mean that the Trust took over management of the council's parks and nature reserves, but I am reluctant to change the Trust's wording here in case I get it wrong. Do you have a suggestion?
  • I read the source and still don't quite know what they mean. Perhaps it's the difference in American and British English, but I don't read "large countryside estate" as several scattered parks and reserves. Perhaps there's a contemporary source that can clarify. Reywas92Talk 16:23, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I see I missed this comment. I have limited access forthe next two weeks while I am on holiday but I will check when I get back. Dudley Miles (talk) 22:50, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have raised a query with the editor who maintains grid references, and will update or delete if it is not just a temporary bug. Dudley Miles (talk) 12:33, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is one of the sites which are not open to the public and are run by Trusts to provide educational facilities for schools. SWT does not specifically mention schools, but it does mention an outdoor classroom so I have added this. Dudley Miles (talk) 12:33, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have never been clear about the rules about commas, but I have changed as you suggest. Dudley Miles (talk) 12:33, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Lead makes no mention of the fact that it seems this award is now no longer presented.
  • You convert ₹3 lakh but not ₹1 lakh which comes before it...
  • Any chance of a fair use image of the shawl or the "memento"?
Sorry, I could not find a free image on commons.
  • "one of the 22" MOSNUM.
  • "in poet Pampa's town" do you mean "in Pampa's hometown"?
  • " Indian epic Ramayana" WP:SEAOFBLUE.

  • Any more images to fill up all that whitespace?
  • "Kannada Lexicography" this isn't a lifetime contribution (contrary to the lead) and why is Lexicography capitalised.
It's per the source. He was honored for his work in the lexicography.

Rest looks good. Great job on this! – zmbro (talk) 22:39, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Zmbro Archived the one blue link which is working fine on my server. Replaced ANM's image. The rest has been fixed as well. Thanks for your comments. Yashthepunisher (talk) 06:36, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Two more things: the ref col would look better centered and add a ref that says there was no award in 2018. – zmbro (talk) 15:46, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Zmbro I hope it looks fine now. I could not find a single reference for 2018, so I had to remove that bit entirely. I'll re-include it once the award is given again this year. Yashthepunisher (talk) 19:42, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of Olympic ice hockey players for the Soviet Union[edit]

Nominator(s): Kaiser matias (talk) 20:14, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done up in the style of the previous Olympic ice hockey featured lists (Poland, Canada, Switzerland, United States). My biggest concern is that there aren't many free images to use for the article, and few that do exist are not really appropriate (either not great quality or not going to add much). Any comments are appreciated, and will address them as soon as possible. Kaiser matias (talk) 20:14, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's all I've got. Comparing this one to your other similar FLs, very good job and well done! :-) – zmbro (talk) 16:25, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking it over, fixed those issues. Kaiser matias (talk) 17:19, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I think the notes should be sort able: it allows the ability to see who was captain, inducted into the different halls of fame, and so on, in an easy fashion. Thoughts? Kaiser matias (talk) 18:26, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Your other FLs of the same type have them sortable and that makes sense so yep all good for me. Happy to support :-) – zmbro (talk) 18:59, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of Nashville Sounds broadcasters[edit]

  • Is the title correct? The category is "announcers", the lead calls them "lead broadcasters" (which is linked to "sports commentator"), but nothing says "broadcaster" on its own.
  • Maybe? It follows the naming convention set down by every MLB team's broadcasters list (see Template:Lists of Major League Baseball broadcasters). Sports commentator#Main/play-by-play commentator does mention the term "broadcaster". The references use "broadcaster" and "announcer" interchangeably with "announcer" seeming to appear more often. Despite possibly making things more convoluted, I've changed the column header to "Play-by-play announcers" and swapped out a few instances of "broadcaster" with "announcer". Do you (or does anyone else) think I should proceed with further changes? How so? NatureBoyMD (talk) 22:33, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know, it seems a bit like a bugger's muddle there with so many different ways to refer to essentially the same thing. It's not a big deal I guess as long as we're being consistent, but it might be a good opportunity to align these terms for such lists and categories? The Rambling Man (talk) 17:41, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I created Category:Minor League Baseball broadcasters to which I added this list and what minor league broadcasters I could find at Category:Baseball announcers. At present, all MLB (as well as the other major American leagues: NFL, NBA, and NHL) use the term "broadcaster" in categories and lists league-wide and for each team. Dictionary.com indicates "broadcaster" can be used to refer to both the individual announcer and the station broadcasting a game. I also changed the section title for this list to "Announcers and stations". I'm not sure how (or if) to proceed beyond that. NatureBoyMD (talk) 21:18, 21 May 2019 (UTC) Follow-up: The NFL uses "announcers" for the league and "broadcasters" for each team. Go figure. NatureBoyMD (talk) 21:21, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Only three of the seven notable enough for an article?
  • It looks that way. The other four are all known for their minor league and collegiate broadcasting; three are active, one is now an accountant. Steve Selby, now a redirect to this list, was successfully PROD'd in 2008. NatureBoyMD (talk)
  • Besides when they came and went, and which station(s) they broadcast on, is there anything of interest to note about any of these individuals' tenures as broadcaster while working for the Sounds?
  • I've added details on two who called championship seasons, one calling two perfect games, and one calling the team's last games at their former stadium and first games at their new stadium. NatureBoyMD (talk) 22:33, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Table isn't sortable so no need to repeat linking.
  • Plenty of scope for reducing the size of the table, or at least using row/col spans where the same information is repeated time after time (e.g. Jamison 80 to 82 is identical, Jamison 84 to 87 identical, Caroll 91 to 94 identical, Hem 2012 to 16 identical etc etc).

Comments

A couple of questions, at least one of which may be down to my unfamiliarity with how US sports coverage works
  • I've added text explaining that the radio announcers provided commentary for TV games except in the 1979 season. I've not added the TV announcer to the table. I'm wondering if I should create a separate table for TV announcers & stations or try to sandwich his name into the existing table. ? NatureBoyMD (talk) 14:56, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've added a footnote beside the station in the table. NatureBoyMD (talk) 16:12, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Correct, the team has a contract with an announcer to call the games and a separate contact with a station to air the broadcast. (Though, the 1978 announcer owned the station.) I've added prose regarding why the first station was selected, why they switched in the second year, and reasons for subsequent station changes. NatureBoyMD (talk) 14:56, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season[edit]

Nominator(s): TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk · contributions) 04:47, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Like 2016 and 2017 before it, the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season was yet another damaging year for tropical cyclones. The two names that will forever be associated with 2018 are Florence and Michael. Florence caused catastrophic flooding across North Carolina and South Carolina in mid-September. Michael, meanwhile, was the first Category 5 hurricane to strike the United States since Andrew in 1992. Together, these storms killed over 120 people and cost nearly $50 billion in damage. This timeline represents the season as it unfolded. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk · contributions) 04:47, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Opens like a tabloid, "third in a series of three destructive and deadly years". Seriously, stick to encyclopedic writing.
  • Definitely not keen on that bold link in the opening sentence either, but hey, it's less of a crime than the tabloidism!
  • "It is these two major hurricanes that " -> "These two major hurricanes..." tighten it up, make it less of a commentary, and more an encyclopedic article.
  • Why Cabo Verde when 99% of our English language readers will expect Cape Verde?
    • In 2013, the island country decided that the Portuguese designation "Cabo Verde" was their official nomenclature. The National Hurricane Center began referencing "Cabo Verde" instead of "Cape Verde" back in 2016. ☁❄ϟ TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk · contributions) 22:55, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • "landfalls" is piped to a redirect. "Landfall" is also, later, piped to a redirect back to itself...
  • " Praia, Cabo Verde" is ironically piped to a redirect too, Praia, Cape Verde, which then just links to Praia...

List of national memorials of the United States[edit]

Nominator(s): Reywas92Talk 22:10, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This was originally just going to be the National Park Service units like List of national lakeshores and seashores of the United States but then I doubled my workload with the memorials that are independently operated but don't receive the billing the NPS sites do. Congress is quite inconsistent with naming sites as "national memorials" as they either authorize construction of memorials or commemorative works that may or may not be built or other times name an existing site, so I read a lot of legislation during this project. Anyway I look forward to your comments. Reywas92Talk 22:10, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

All I got. Great job on this! – BeatlesLedTV (talk) 19:23, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

All done. Pearl Harbor is brand new so the NPS Index doesn't have the area but it's the same as the Hawaii portion of the former World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. I don't know what the blue ELs are supposed to mean or how to fix the 'connection issue'; I can open those links from the article just fine. Reywas92Talk 07:15, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not at all convinced you need to bold "National memorial"" in the lead.
    • Done, had that because there isn't a corresponding main article
  • "The National Park Service (NPS), an agency..." This probably needs an ((as of)) as this might change.
    • Added, but this doesn't see very frequent changes and I would expect any changes to be updated.
  • " administers 30 memorials as official units and provides assistance for five " MOSNUM, thirty or 5. I prefer the former.
    • Done
  • do not have the word "national" in their titles. I don't see the importance of this at all.
    • All national parks, national monuments, etc. do include this, and the NPS specifically notes this naming convention [7].
  • " uniquely designated" in what sense? Aren't all these memorials unique?
    • That the Washington Monument is the only one with "monument" in its name despite being a memorial, but I can remove that.
  • "created out of World War II Valor " shouldn't there be a "the" after "of"?
    • Added
  • "The NPS national memorial units are in 15 states" I see no need for "units" here, reads really odd to me.
    • Done
  • "Washington, D.C., has the most, 11, followed by Pennsylvania and New York, each with three." MOSNUM again (eleven/three or 11/3).
    • Done
  • "The historic areas within the National Park System are automatically listed on the National Register of Historic Places." appears to be unreferenced.
    • Done
  • "A few additional units, including Fort McHenry National Monument, " disobeys the rule you gave in the last para of the lead...
    • Not sure what you mean, Fort McHenry is not classified as a national memorial but as a national monument but I can remove the detail
  • Area[9][8] - citations in numerical order please.
    • Done
  • "(8.1×10−5 km2)" not sure scientific notation is appropriate for this kind of list. Hectares would be a more natural conversion.
    • done
  • ".76 acres " consistency with a leading zero please.
    • Done
  • "(0.0 km2)" is a very unhelpful conversion.
    • 0.1 hectares
  • No need to split ref's by 35em, just let the template do it by 30em itself.

That's enough for a first pass. I'll read the notes on each memorial after these are addressed. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:20, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Further

  • "Today there is a reconstructed fort " I would ((as of)) this.  Done This isn't a time-sensitive statement expecting to become outdated... Reworded
  • " during the Civil War and" link Civil War. Every time.  Done
  • "of the Southwest, " link (you link Southeast in the next entry...)  Done
  • "George Washington's inauguration" is piped to a redirect.  Done
  • "Southwest Pennsylvania" why is Southwest capitalised here?  Done
  • "Only a year later" no need for "Only"  Done
  • "of the Constitution and served" Constitution is piped to a redirect. And link it every time.  Done
  • "own of Johnstown, Pennsylvania" comma after Pennsylvania.  Done
  • "UN forces" spell out UN.  Done
  • "in support of South Korea against North Korea" this makes it sound like a football match.  Done
  • You link Grand Canyon but not Gettysburg Address. Be consistent.  Done
  • "36 Doric columns " (a) don't start sentences with a number and (b) I doubt most of the US readers here know what a Doric column is, so link that.  Done
  • Use a consistent number of decimal places in the areas.  Done
  • "The Attack on Pearl Harbor on" I don't think it was a movie title, the A can be an a.  Done Yes, creating a link in the visual editor automatically uses the capitalized article title and I missed the fix
  • "a court-martial " of whom?  Done
  • "integration" is piped to a redirect.  Done
  • Link Church of England.  Done
  • Link American Revolution.  Done
  • "2.7 million Americans " again don't start sentences with numbers.  Done
  • "of soldiers[37]" period?  Done
  • "the memorial is undergoing a" another "as of" moment.  Done
  • "alongside the Allies " I thought they were Allies, not fighting alongside them...?  Done
  • "4,048 gold stars representing the more than 400,000 killed in action." Why 4048?  Done More precise number
  • Link Mariana Islands  Done Added Northern, it's the same link as the location
  • Link Declaration of Independence.  Done
  • "damaging hundred of buildings" hundreds.  Done
  • " 9:01 am " -> " 9:01 a.m. "  Done
  • "The major victory cost the lives of 307 sailors, a destroyer, and an aircraft carrier, but demoralized the Japanese and secured the vital base on the island." this is all a little bit tabloid for me.  Done
  • "killed over 200" more than 200... but 200 who?  Not done Do I really have to say the word "Navajo" a third time in this sentence?
  • "Part of National Mall and Memorial Parks" odd incomplete sentence. Maybe start with "It is..."?  Done
  • "More than 150,000 troops " Allied troops, not just the implication of that many US troops.  Done
  • You link missing in action but not killed in action.  Done
  • "USS Indianapolis (CA-35)" is probably a more interesting link that "heavy cruiser".  Done; it was the same article as the memorial name
  • What is VFW?  Done

I'm afraid there are no free images available.
I could not find any information beyond that on the internet or any book.
I actually had the same issue with the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award so all good there.

  • "The awardees" yuck, why not "The recipients"?
  • " ₹2" link ₹.
  • Presumably (US$2,900) is equivalent ((as of)) 2019?
  • "49 Best Director awards" doesn't need capitalisation as the full formal name isn't being used.
  • "As of 2017, five directors" it's now 2019.
  • Image captions which are complete sentences need a full stop.

  • "Vietnam two times in the" -> two times ---> twice.
  • " is handed out annually" little bit colloquial, why not "is presented annually"?
  • "submission in 1993" bit easter egg linky, why not "submission for the 1993 awards" or similar.
  • "Vietnam began to receive AMPAS' invitation to participate " reads really odd to me, do you mean "Vietnam initially received AMPAS' invitation to participate " or something like that? I don't know how you can "begin to receive an invitation...."
  • AMPAS or "the" AMPAS? Be consistent.
  • "is actively decided by the MCST" why "actively"? and do you really mean "is chosen by"? or "decided upon by"?
  • "the chosen film must attain the highest score on a 10-point scale and the average above 9 points" is this information made public?

Comments trivia, but hey.
  • "Alabama" is piped to a redirect.
  • T.G. should be spaced.
  • Lead image caption: "chart in his own" -> perhaps just add "both" in front of "in" to be super clear.
  • "Nelson's four weeks consisted of two" tempted to repeat "number ones" here after two.
  • Hank Williams Jr no longer uses a comma.
  • A couple of song titles are piped to redirects (e.g. "Any Day Now", "Put Your Dreams Away" etc) and some capitalisation is inconsistent with our own articles (e.g. "Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby" -> "Don't Worry 'bout Me Baby"), check 'em all.
