Category:Black British footballers (edit · talk · history · links · watch · logs · delete)

Osiris has nominated this page for deletion for the reason: I think Category:Black British sportspeople should suffice for this field. I don't see how race in this particular sport is viewed differently from any other. Osiris (talk) 05:54, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. Race is often raised as an issue in association football in the UK, and it receives a great deal of media coverage. There have been many race-based controversies in the sport. It has been pointed out on many occasions that in professional football in the UK, there are many black players now (in contrast to a generation ago), yet there are very few Asian players - despite the fact that millions of Asians live in the UK, and many of them play the game recreationally. There is also a marked disparity in British professional team sports in regard to there being a large number of black footballers, in comparison to very few black players of cricket and rugby. I see. But that still all sounds like it's part of the wider discussion of racism in British sports. If Black British is a race, then a lower level of categorisation should apply; the guidelines state: "Ethnic groups are commonly used when categorizing people; however, race is not." This is a triple-intersection category. If we indeed want a less-complex category system than the English Wikipedia, then we should apply a stricter definition of the relevant guidelines. That still doesn't indicate why we, on the Simple English Wikipedia, should have a special separate category just for British footballers of this race. I find this category repulsive, personally. It isolates these players from the rest without any justification other than that they don't have white skin. Osiris (talk) 09:33, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A guideline that has often been stated in deletion discussions is that if an article could be written on a subject, then a category for it is justified. An article about black footballers in the UK could certainly be written, whereas an article about Asian footballers in the UK, or black swimmers in the UK could not be written. I don't know why there is so much race-related controversy in British football but not in athletics, boxing etc, but it is certainly 'distinct and unique in its own right'.
