Kem (Roushie: Кемь; Karelie: Kemi; Finnish: Vienan Kemi) is a historic toun an the admeenistrative centre o Kemsky Destrict o the Republic o Karelie, Roushie, locatit on the shores o the White Sea whaur the Kem River enters it, on the railwey leadin frae Petrozavodsk tae Murmansk. Population: 13,051 (2010 Census);[1] 14,620 (2002 Census);[4] 18,522 (1989 Census).[5]
Kem wis first mentioned as a demesne o the Novgorod posadnik Marfa Boretskaya in 1450, when she donatit it tae the Solovetsky Monastery (situatit in the White Sea several kilometres aff shore). In 1657, a firthen fort wis erectit thare.
