Kafr Qara or Kafr Qari (Arabic: كفر قرع, Hebrew: כַּפְר קַרִע) is an Israeli-Arab toun 22 mile (35 km) sootheast o Haifa, Israel. In 2009, the population wis 15,300.[1]
Kfar Qara wis founded about 350 years ago. The wird Qara in Arabic means pumpkin, which is the main crop for the community, hence the name Kfar Qara which means the village of the Pumpkin. Kafr Qara is part o the Triangle. It is located in the Wadi Ara region, northwest o the Green Line. The majority of the residents are Muslim.[1] It is governed by a local council. A sma percentage o the toun's laund wis expropriatit bi the local authorities an Israeli govrenment for public an militar uise.[2] Kafr Qara is ane o the walthier touns in the Triangle.[3]
In September 2003, a group o local parents foondit a bilingual, multicultural elementar schuil in Kafr Qara, namit Hand in Hand – Bridge over the Wadi, or "Brig ower the Wadi". Kafr Qara heich schuil, established in 1970 as a vocational schuil, is nou a comprehensive heich schuil for 10t–12t graders frae Kafr Qara an environs. The schuil haes pairticipatit in multicultural projects such as Jitli, an affers a joint leadership program for Arab an Jewish teenagers.[2]
