The change is linguistically telling. Telly (or TV) is also the colloquial English for television in many parts of the English-speaking world. Apart from 'posh' people, most people just say telly (or TV). Of course the English Wikipedia uses the formal word because encylopedias aren't usually written in a colloquial style. Once upon a time when 'posh' people also spoke Scots they would have called it a televeesion in line with the Scots pronunciation of vision. [1] Of course, now that Scots actually functions as local varieties of colloquial English rather than a formalized language in its own right, you either 'revive' posh Scots for a formal register ("no body speaks like that") or end up with an encyclopedia written in a pastiche of colloquial Scots, colloquial English and formal English for want of better alternatives. Bear in mind that most English-speakers don't speak like an encylopedia article either. Nogger (tauk) 19:54, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
