This is a list of articles (only) that contain external hyperlinks to URLs matching *.geocities.com, as of 2010-08-18. Some of these articles require cleanup. Most of GeoCities shut down in October 2009, although in some places it is still going.
- If an article uses this external hyperlink as a link to its "official WWW site", then it should be replaced with a link to the current official WWW site.
- If an article uses this external hyperlink to cite a source, then at the very least ((cite web)) must be used with the accessdate= parameter. (We are, after all, in this position in the first place because of parts of the WWW that have rotted away.) A better action in many cases will be to replace the citation with a reliable source, there being questions about the reliability of most (but not all) WWW pages on GeoCities, including the identifiability of their authorships and the expertise of their authors.
- If the article uses this external hyperlink as neither a source citation nor an official WWW site, then at the very least it should be tagged ((dead)), and its inclusion in the article at all should be considered, discussed (if necessary), and decided upon.
Do not just robotically replace hyperlinks with hyperlinks to oocities.com or to the Wayback Machine. Neither addresses the problems posed by the unreliability of many of the pages as sources, and neither address the fact that a hyperlink to an "official WWW site" will not be to an archive or to an unblessed mirror. Also note that serious concerns have been expressed as to the validity of the copyright status of oocities. For more details, see the several Administrators' Noticeboard and External Links Noticeboard discussions of this subject.
