Suspected sockpuppets

[edit]

The user account popped up yesterday and suspiciously started off with unhatting a section on a talk page: [1], the edit log was originally concerning however I reverted their change and continued as usual. After checking back later, I found they had unhatted the section again, this time, they also for some bizarre reason they edited; [2] a comment made by the previous known sock User:Negin1. After looking into the users global contributions, I saw that they have only contributed twice and both times are the diffs I have provided above. Additionally, the first edit by the user was at a similar time to when the previous sock was known to make edits at around 12:00; [3] and the user account was made 3 minutes; [4] before they made their first edit raising suspicions as to how they wanted to be on that talk page specifically to make an edit and moreover why their only contributions are somewhat unconstructive edits on a talk page. My conclusion is that like User:Negin1, User:NaneSarma is also a sock of User:Gaditano23, based on the timings and nature of their edits, as well as the sudden creation of the user for no other apparent purpose. Please sign your comments, also there is sufficient evidence to suspect you of Sock Puppetry, the fact that an account made yesterday is knowledgeable on these guidelines further proves my point. As do your unnecessary edits on three articles to try and make your account appear more genuine. The one liner user page is also a classic sign of sock puppets from the user as well as the 'Hi, I'm' Chieftain Tartarus (talk) 11:52, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm knowledgeable because I googled them. Your evidence is that I can use google, I edit a few random articles and I said hi? This uncivil behavior is conducive to the death of wikipedia. All this over the spelling of "focused". Its ridiculous and a little bit petty IMO. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NaneSarma (talkcontribs) 12:07, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Convenient isn't it that you happen to use the word 'petty' when that's exactly the word I used against User:Negin1 when he was being adamant about the word 'focused' being spelt like that, [9]. There's too many coincidences for you to be an unrelated user. Chieftain Tartarus (talk) 12:19, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User Sonrisas1 (the most active sock) was a editor who contributed almost exclusively to articles on Catalonia and who was especially focused on criticism of the Catalan independence movement as racist or xenophobic. That user was banned on 2018-01-03, but a number of IP editors, as well as a couple of single purpose accounts have attempted to restore materials that Sonrisas1 wrote or translated. All of the users listed above focus on this topic to the exclusion of anything else, and most are inactive before Sonrisas1 was banned. All of the IPs are based either in the UAE or Kabul, although I am suspicious of a handful of IP editors based in Madrid as well. Call me paranoid.

@Bbb23: I'm trying to find any non-stale evidence linked to Azerti83 that could possibly be used by a CU, but without success. It appears that you did a CU-block on Azerti83 last January, but I can't find any details. Is there anything else to look at for this user? If not, I think we need to decline the CU request on the grounds that everything is stale. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 05:10, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The sockmaster (Azerti83) was banned in early 2018. I get the impression that it has continued on and off since that point. All three accounts share the same basic editorial stance and interests. The names follow the same pattern of word + some number that other sock puppets have followed. Negin2019 is particularly close to Negin1 another Azerti83 sockpuppet that was blocked in March of last year.

Negin2019 is clearly linked through their edits to Xarnegos:

Filologo2 and Harlyn35 are more complicated, but also linked to Negin1 through several very similar edits over a longer period of time. Most of these are related to downplaying any role that Spain may have played in genocides of Native Americans. Examples:

Sock 3 (Harlyn35) is the only sock puppet that is recently active, but the others were active earlier this year and it seems worthwhile to go ahead and document this since the abuse seems fairly extensive. It seems pretty likely that there is also a fair bit of IP socking going on, as well as other (anti-Spain) sockpuppets warring over the content. Nblund talk 23:54, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Both accounts also have a habit of unattributed copying within Wikipedia as well, but the relentless POV pushing on Spanish history is the main giveaway. Nblund talk 17:25, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The main account has a lengthy history of edit warring in pages related to Spanish history. Ivanvector blocked this block-evading Madrid based IP on November 4 and semi-protected Genocide of Indigenous peoples because of persistent sockpuppetry.

I can point to more diffs if needed, but I don't think there's really even much of an effort to conceal the socking here, so I'm keeping it brief. Nblund talk 21:20, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
