The New England Wikimedia General Meeting will be a large-scale meetup of all interested Wikimedians from the New England area in order to discuss regional coordination and possible formalization of our community (i.e., a chapter).
We hope that this will be a very important meetup for everyone to attend, as it may affect the future of the Wikimedia community in New England. We will discuss current activities already going on in the region, including the regular Boston meetup schedule, the Wikipedia education program, and GLAM collaborations. We will also share ideas about future events and how we can become more organized. This is not an administrative meeting; it will be informal, and primarily chance to socialize in person with others from the area. There will be free food provided for attendees. All ages and wiki experience levels are welcome.
If you haven't attended a meetup in a while (or ever), this one is important!
In New York and DC, the local Wikimedian communities have already organized into official chapters (Wikimedia New York City and Wikimedia DC). This allows the local volunteers to make official contacts to institutions on behalf of a recognized organization, to be able to collect and spend money for events and equipment, and to generally support the local Wikimedia community in its efforts. The DC community is even organizing Wikimania 2012!
We don't know whether New England has enough interest and participation to work towards a formal organization in the short-term, but this meeting is an opportunity for everyone to get involved in some capacity and help us do cool, fun stuff in our region.
Didn't sign up in advance but was there with my wife, joined dinner discussion, hosted after-dinner hang-out at our office nearby. Reify-tech (talk) 02:21, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to attend but not sure of my schedule yet. Also I will be moving out of New England in the fall so not sure if that would be a problem. --Found5dollar (talk) 12:53, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Boston parking meters don't run on Sundays, so if you don't want to pay for Green Line parking, find a spot on the street nearby and it's yours for the duration. ☯.ZenSwashbuckler.☠14:00, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm defending my thesis on 28 April, but I could try to make time on Sunday. I walk 5 miles/day and could justify walking to the BPL for this event, then will need to rest halfway. MaynardClark (talk)
Sounds like a whole lot of fun, but it comes right at the end of my spring break and because I live in Southern Massachusetts I need to clear it with my dad (he's my ride). If I can't make it, good luck to everyone who's attending! --Abigail was here :DTalk to Me.Email Me.12:25, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Would attend via Skype. Am likely not able to attend in person. Will likely be able to attend future meetings. benturner214.
I really wish I could have joined this. Unfortunately, it is not only on my birthday but I am also out of town :-) I would try Skype if it is an option. Codrin.B (talk)
I am a bit too far away to attend, but if there was ever a meeting in Burlington, Vermont I would be interested. Also, a Skype meeting would be cool. Gopats92 (talk) 14:54, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To my ongoing regret, I am no longer in New England (Minneapolis, MN appears likely to be my residence for the foreseeable future), so I will be unable to attend. You might want to remove me from your invitation list, too. *Septegram*Talk*Contributions*17:08, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
