It might be nice to shorten these, if possible. This one is 205 characters, though could be much shorter.
How about "New to Wikipedia, or looking to meet fellow Wikipedians? Please sign up and join us for a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon in Boston on Sat, Jan 5th!"
I'd think people get annoyed if notices are too big, too often, too much, etc. They may find ways to hide them with css, etc., or they simply tune them out. Keeping these shorter is helpful I think. --Aude (talk) 03:20, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I didn't mean for it to go so far into Maine, and I guess it could go more into New York next time. If you want to go ahead and fix it, go right ahead, but it isn't necessary at this point. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 15:43, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how relevant this is to Wikimedians in general, especially as there are two geonotices up for GB already? Past technical evidence suggests that geolocation cannot identify different parts of GB accurately. Deryck C.08:22, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair comment about the technical aspects. But it's worth bearing in mind that:
Therefore, I think that UK editors in general may be interested in contributing to these topic areas. It may therefore be of interest to inform them that the show is taking place, in order for them to consider attending for clarification of information related to these topics. Is that any help? Regarding the other GB notices, I see that the #Wikimania UK notice is proposed to end on 20 April; the potential overlap could be reduced if the start date for the proposed WikiProject RISC OS notice were to be postponed (this is the first time I've proposed such a thing and just plucked the one month duration from the air). Which is the other proposed GB notice, please? Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 10:04, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
PS On re-reading, I realise that the entrance fee may come across as being some sort of advert. I confirm that I'm not involved in the show itself, other than attending as an exhibitor. It's run by the local club and the entrance fee is necessary in order to cover costs. I'm not (and have never been) a member of the club, and live a couple of hundred miles from Wakefield. If the wording could be changed somehow to address these points (while making clear that there is an entrance fee, if that's desirable) then I'm open to suggestions. Something else I could do is try to obtain funding from WMUK to cover the entrance fees of the first 10 active Wikipedians attending, or something. But I've no idea how serious a possibility that would be, considering the other demands on resources. Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 10:16, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are few events up north, be nice to advertise an event in Wakefield. Can it be added as a "Wikimeet"? I'm guessing you would nt throw people out for not editing on a BBC every night Victuallers (talk) 15:47, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The original reason I pulled this notice from the live page was it did not appear to be a Wikipedia related event. I am still not seeing that in the revised wording so my objection still stands. SpinningSpark17:58, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments. I've tried to explain previously why this is a Wikipedia related event, but clearly I'm not making myself understood. The session is being run as an outreach event to attract new Wikipedians. By encouraging existing Wikipedians to attend, they'll be able to share their experience and potentially add something to our project. Rather than simply stating that you're not seeing the explanation in the revised wording, perhaps you could offer a little constructive input like proposing some wording which would offer the explanation you feel is missing. I'm going to add another one above now. -- Trevj (talk) 19:38, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was not able to suggest a wording because it is as clear as mud from the information given what about the Wakefield show is related to Wikipedia. However, having drilled down into the website, I have now discovered that the Wikiproject has a stand at the show. So why not just say that? Better, link to the page that gives details of the stand. So my suggestion;
Thanks. If you're going to add it at MediaWiki:Geonotice.js, perhaps the geographical area and date ought to be included too. -- Trevj (talk) 07:33, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for requesting: We had a Wikimania UK geonotice up a while back pointing to uk.wikimedia.org - now it's moved to meta and it is more directed. Basically the Wikimania bid for London could do with more community input.
I filled it out straight onto Geonotice.js but then realised that it would probably be better if another admin were to give it a look over. —Tom Morris (talk) 16:33, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I thought you simply did it yourself, which you didn't. With the Wakefield request above you may want to negotiate with Trevj on who gets a geonotice at what times, because the convention is that there shouldn't be more than 2 UK geonotices at one time, but that's not a fixed rule. I'm open to discussion.
Because #WikiProject RISC OS in Wakefield, UK is held on a Saturday, my preference would be to have some amount of early visibility, in order for editors to consider it in their diaries. Apart from that, it looks as if the week 21-28 April will be OK for the proposed Wakefield notice.
If I've correctly understood meta:Wikimania 2013, there may be little point including the Wikimania UK notice after 15 April.
Unfortunately, further conflict is likely in connection with the Bristol bid (which was prompted after posting the Wakefield request). Therefore, I'd like to propose a joint Wikimania UK notice, linking to both London and Bristol, per WP:NPOV (I know that relates to articles, but I'm sure you see what I mean).
For future reference, it'd be nice you could provide links in the message and a range of dates (start and end). I see that the meetup was cancelled due to lack of sign-ups. Dunno if this was a result of the geonotice not being put up, but you might just want to post on the talk page of any admin who has recently edited MediaWiki:Geonotice.js in order to direct their attention to your request. I don't think it should be that way; some people don't bother to modify their user preferences (I, for one, hadn't done that for a long time). Lynch712:52, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
