Non-free image being used to "identify an episode" an episode. This is a screenshot and not a logo, title card or similar type of image that is used for identification and so fails to meet the stated purpose. • Speedy Keep and close. This file has been on Wikipedia for over 14 years and there is zero reason to delete the image. "Significant sourced critical commentary" is not a sole requirement for meeting NFCC#8 - there are several other non-free images for The Wire episodes which have stayed on their respective articles for over a decade. Their purpose, as I have stated for the third time to you now, primarily serves to identify the episode at hand. Your argument that a "logo" or "title card" must be used to identify an episode is based off the assumption that every show produces a "logo" or a "title card" with each episode that it films, which is simply not true. A still image from the said episode or official set images released by the film crew can constitute episode identification, which are the exact types of images I am uploading.

NFCC#8 states that non-free content can be used if it can significantly improve a reader's understanding of the article, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. Simply adding a still image from the episode significantly helps readers in identifying which episode it is - especially those who have watched the episode before and are re-researching the series. Removing that image absolutely is a detriment to that understanding.

Wikipedia's upload wizard states: "Please remember that you will need to demonstrate that: The file will serve an important function in a particular article; (NFCC8)". The function of the file has been demonstrated.

There is absolutely no reasonable way of thinking that this image's "presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding". I am trying to imagine someone looking at the image and saying "Ah! Yes! A man leaning forward on a wooden board (perhaps the top of a lectern) with a plastic cup in his hands (perhaps containing coffee. Now I understand what the article is telling me about the episode", but I am failing to do so. The claim that the image "serves to identify the episode" makes no sense: I watched all of the episodes of "The Wire", but the picture that I have just described is not in any way specific enough to bring back the particular episode in question: it could easily have come from any one of many episodes, even if one regards identifying the particular episode as "significantly [increasing] readers' understanding of the article topic" and believes that failure to do so "would be detrimental to that understanding", which is highly dubious anyway. The amount of time for which the image has been here is no guarantee that it satisfies policy, for at least two reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, images, promotional articles, vandalism, lies, fake references for claims not actually supported by them, factual errors, and many other things which shouldn't be on Wikipedia unfortunately often do stay in place for many years until someone realises that they don't comply with policy and takes steps to have them removed. "Nobody has removed it yet, so it must be all right to keep" is not a substitute for considering the issues and deciding whether it should be removed or not. Secondly, what was once policy-compliant may not continue to be. The current version of Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria specifies that non-free content may be used "only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding", whereas the version current when the file was uploaded didn't. The file clearly and unambiguously fails to comply with the current policy on non-free content, and it therefore should not remain. JBW (talk) 23:17, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

These New Zealand photos, dated 1946 and 1960, are attributed to "Swainson's Studios, New Plymouth, New Zealand". Non-free image of Robin Trower. The stated purpose is "[t]o provide a unique photo of a subject who rarely smiles while performing. Great effort was made to show his signature Amps by Marshall." The image is not the subject of any significant sourced commentary, and in particular nothing about smiling. It is also unclear why it is important for this photo to show Marshall amps. Yes, Trower uses them and that is stated in text as well as in the background of other images in the article. Fails WP:NFCC#8 on the smiling and WP:NFCC#1 for the amps.
