Propose deleting Category:Democratic Empires (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Nominator's rationale: This is a strange intersection. For one thing, I don't think any empire was ever truly democratic throughout its history. For instance, the French colonial empire (the only current entry in the category) began somewhere in the 16th-century, at a time when France was clearly not a democracy. Delete per nom, WP:SUBJECTIVECAT and WP:ARBITRARYCAT. Not just the "democratic" part (which in the French case wouldn't have applied to the great majority of the colonised, nor to the female colonisers in terms of suffrage), but also the "empire" part is questionable. See my recent CfR about Category:Muslim empires, which was renamed Category:Former Islamic monarchies. Although "Empire" is a fine term to be used in article titles if it's the WP:COMMONNAME, it's a bad option for categorising, because it is so subjective, both in a positive and negative sense. Delete, "democratic" can only refer to a period within a country's history, not to countries as a whole. The Czech Republic has been democratic throughout its existance (as one of very few countries) but even then there is no guarantee that it will remain democratic forever.
