Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would ask that you assume good faith while interacting with other editors, which you did not on Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/FLAVORx. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Please do not make out that I did not perform diligence to that article. I know it's not really a big deal, but if you are going to thank people for taking part in a discussion then it's a bit strange that you should miss one out. Remember that IPs are human too. 86.17.222.157 (talk) 21:37, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Silk Purse Award | ||
I am both pleased and honored to present you with the Silk Purse Award in appreciation for your superb improvements to the Endre Lund Eriksen article, essentially changing what was seen through lack of diligence by some as a sow's ear, and making it into a terrific silk purse. Schmidt, Michael Q. 15:33, 8 May 2016 (UTC) |
Wow. Have a notable parent does not somehow automatically mean the child cannot possibly establish a separate notability. The AFD is akin to one demanding that Charlie Sheen be redirected to Martin Sheen or that Drew Barrymore be redirected to John Barrymore or some other of her progenitors. Wow. Schmidt, Michael Q. 23:44, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Deciding an (originally) unsourced topic to be automatically something unimprovable is not a proper deletion rationale and instead reflects a WP:PPOV. Stating someone's parentage is perfectly acceptable in a BLP, and WP:NONENGISH sourcing is perfectly fine for someone raised in France. Expecting others to do the work is not how it's done. , and you went on to add an ((Unsigned)) template to his post (Diff). That is a friendly gesture. A couple of hints: All templates in the unsigned series should be substituted, you transcluded it. No worries, a bot has since fixed it. But in the future use ((subst:Unsigned))
.((subst:Unsigned2))
is a bit easier to work with, have a look at its docs. But there is an even easier way to fix unsigned messages, and that is Anomie's great little script unsignedhelper.js. If you wish you may install it by adding the following to your common.js: ((subst:js|User:Anomie/unsignedhelper.js))
, then save and refresh. Regards, Sam Sailor Talk! 09:55, 19 May 2016 (UTC)Hello, bit more help or advice if you would be so kind. Our IP hopping disruptive editor has now created an account (the Pope is also now Methodist). The first thing he did (IP, not the Pope) was take a rejected draft and transfer most of the content into mainspace (Surtees TS14). Leaving only the rejection notice at the draft page. Question is, how does that affect the page histories etc? It seems akin to a C&P move to me. In any event it's somewhat 'gaming' the system...as he has been known to do before with his multiple requests for re-directs. Thanks. Best regards, Eagleash (talk) 22:55, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Sam.
I just wanted to let you know I restructured the Talk:Providence (religious movement).
I split off an independent section newly entitled /*Reverting to old version*/ because I wanted to use a section title that more obviously described the topic being discussed.
And another user was taking issue with the choice of Sept 2015 or Oct 2015 as the version to revert to, so I put his response under it too. --Kiyoweap (talk) 09:20, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

Dear Sam Sailor,
This is the reference to the wikipedia page of Anandmurti gurumaa" which has recently been deleted following the deletion debate at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Anandmurti_Gurumaa . I had requested to resume this page,in response to which I have been directed to contact you (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_undeletion#anandmurti_gurumaa). I would like to bring to your kind notice that the reason mentioned in the debate is lack of independent resources and dead links, whereas lot of sources and independent links exist featuring work of Anandmurti gurumaa as a renowned Indian spiritual master. Moreover these reliable links belong to national newspapers like Times of India, DNA, The Hindu, India today, Amar Ujala etc.

Hello, former IP boy has created 3 more non-notable articles in the last 24 hours. (It's half-term I think!) Most of the content copied from somewhere. I was wondering how sneaky it might be if we (F1 Proj.) (I.e. me and one other who tidies up after him too) created redirects for cars he hasn't got to yet and placed the 'hidden advice' mentioned previously on the page. I'm sure it must violate some policy or other but if he was able to request re-directs and then create articles seems fair dos if we can preempt him. (He's also created a number of categories which he had declined at AfC). Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 18:21, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
<!--Please do not re-create an article at this location without initiating a discussion at the Wikipedia F1 project. Thank you.-->
as done in March 87P, it is probably ok per WP:HIDDEN. Maybe the hidden text should be worded even softer and include a reason? I notice that WP:HIDDEN says:
<!--Please do not re-create an article at this page or for this car without initiating a discussion at the Wiki F1 Project talk-page, in order to establish that it would satisfy notability and that there is a consensus for a page to exist. Thank you. --> at several pages thus far, but there are quite a number of them and it may take a while to remember them all. Regards, Eagleash (talk) 14:38, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

You used User:Kephir/gadgets/rater to assess said template. This caused the talk page to be placed in CAT:WRONG, because the WikiProject Templates banner does not allow use in template talk namespace.
Before we consider blanking the talk page, I have asked at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Templates whether the namespace restriction could be modified. --SoledadKabocha (talk) 22:42, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

Misunderstanding???
Hi there! I'm sure this must be a simple misunderstanding. ny and new york link to the New York (disambiguation) page; i.e., when entered without the caps; while when capitalized, NY and New York link to the proper State article page. Obviously this was an oversight. People are usually or at least often lazy and don't type in the caps. There's no reason for the capitalized terms to redirect properly but the uncapitalized versions directing to the dab page. I happen to notice the error and wanted to fix it myself but didn't know how to redirect a term that already linked to a particular page, and that's why I put in the request. Best, Castncoot (talk) 03:28, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Castncoot. Thanks for your message. Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects is for requesting new redirects, but the three you asked for, new york, ny, and New york, already existed. MediaWiki has a number of technical limitations, one of them being that the first letter of an article title can not be lowercase, so in reality new york and New york are the same, and ny is in reality Ny. I was just skimming the lengthy discussion at Special:Permalink/726540845#Requested move 9 June 2016 (and the even longer below) and the move review, and notice you have been there yourself already. We'll await to see the outcome of these discussions. But I agree with you, that if New York redirects to New York (state), then New york, which is an ((R from miscapitalisation)), should redirect to New York (state) to avoid a double redirect, not to the DAB page as edited six days ago. And I would apply the same kind of logic to Ny: it should redirect as the community decides NY should redirect. Both can be boldly edited. Best, Sam Sailor Talk! 09:48, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Castncoot: May I add that the requested move IMHO is ill prepared? Although I, as a non-American, belong to the apparent minority who thinks New York should redirect to New York City, but accepts that community consensus is something else, I don't think this matter should have been rehashed. All it takes is some humble acceptance that the logic of the 100s or 1000s of editors who discussed the matter before, may have been right. And may I say, the discussion should never ... let me put that this way: were I to close a RM, I'd certainly give this one a wide berth and leave it to someone with more miles under their belt. All in all I think this whole affair is a fine example of unnecessary time wasting. Best, Sam Sailor Talk! 11:06, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Submitting draft
Hello Sam, I wonder if you can shed any light on another tech. problem for me if you would be so kind? The last few drafts I've moved to mainspace, I've put the code ((Userspace draft|source=ArticleWizard|date=Month Year))
at the top of the mark-up page before submitting as I've done previously. This always used to produce the 'new article awaiting review' tag at the top of the page, but does not seem to do so recently. It's probably something blindingly obvious I'm doing wrong (or don't know about) but I'm a bit baffled as things stand. It has only happened since I passed 50 articles but wouldn't think that could have much to do with it! Thanks. Regards, Eagleash (talk) 11:54, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
- I'm always happy to try to help, Eagleash, sometimes it's an opportunity to learn something new, sometimes a possibility for refreshing what you only vaguely remember. (You know the old saying: "Three distinct things happen when you get older: A. You lose short term memory. B. You lose your hair. And C. You, uhh ... you, ehhharrrhm ..... you lose short term memory. ;) )
- The ((Userspace draft)) documentation says "If the page is in article mainspace it shows ((New unreviewed article))". I can see
New unreviewed article
in the code, but why it does not display (e.g. in Keith Holland (racing driver)) is beyond my rudimentary knowledge of template code. You could ask in plenum on the template talk page, or, if you prefer, ask one of the template editors, e.g. SMcCandlish or Enterprisey.
- But isn't it time that you file for autopatrolled at WP:RFP/A? The bar was lowered from 50 to 25, so with 54 articles created you're good. Alternatively I can request it for you, (not that I think that makes any difference), or you can request any sysop who knows your work to grant you the right. That's how I got my
autopatrol

- Thanks, I've asked SMcC. I had a quick look at WP:RFP/A and managed to confuse myself a bit, that's the next thing after... err whatever it was we were talking about. Quote; Kryten, Red Dwarf: "My short term memory has been erased, which, coupled with the erasure of my short term memory, means my short term memory has been erased" Thanks. 17:12, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
- It was a problem with the template code. I have applied for AP. Thanks for suggesting it. Eagleash (talk) 22:35, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Reopen
Hey Sam Sailor! I just saw that Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alanna Shaikh was closed by you. I was actually posting a further analysis of the sources but it got closed before that. :( If you don't mind, could this be reopened and relisted instead? I believe the discussion about sources was continuing on this (both nom and I had posted comments shortly before closure) and a more thorough discussion would strengthen whatever is the eventual outcome of the discussion. Thank you. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 20:50, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Lemongirl942: But of course, give me sec. Sam Sailor Talk! 20:56, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Criticism
I noticed your criticism of a series of PRODs made by me. Although I prefer my PROD log red, I applaud the fact that you're allocating your own time to revamp those articles. I am curious of your opinion about my "non-policy based delete !vote"
and the wording of WP:NOENG. I examined the Richard Thompson source the original author used and was unimpressed. The degree to which I as an Anglophone monoglot cannot verify French-language sources has me wondering if you'd prefer I simply defer to francophones in these regards? This is English-language Wikipedia. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:12, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for your message, Chris troutman.
- If a red-linked PROD log is preferred, the optional logging of proposed deletions can be turned off in Twinkle preferences and the existing PROD log tagged with
((db-u1))
. The notifications posted on User talk:Bearerofthecup could have been skipped by deselecting "Notify page creator if possible" at the time of PROD-tagging, as Bearerofthecup has not edited for 4+ years and falls under the exception in WP:PRODNOM. Several tools are available that list deleted pages created by a user, e.g. xtools.
- I usually stay away from discussion where I feel I lack competence to give a qualified opinion, e.g. in deletion discussions where all or the wast majority of sources are in a language that I do not read and where Google Translate and the like offer little or no help. Japanese would be one example, Arabic another; with my participation in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mahmoud Abdel Moghny being an exception, and where I clearly stated my limited qualifications. I stay away, because I can not comply fully with WP:BEFORE. French is, however, one of the languages where online translation tools output a fairly decent English translation. And thank G*d for that: my French is indeed rusty, as I'm from an age where Latin as well as three different foreign languages were mandatory, but have not practised my French on a regular basis since. Using the alternative search term I provided in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wolf of Soissons, the French language sources - as well as the German - are easily found. From there it only takes a bit of dedication to verify that not only was this a case that drew considerable attention when it happened, it has also been mentioned in sources continuously up till today.
- I have little idea why anyone would think they could reasonably tag for deletion an article without doing a modicum of WP:BEFORE, let alone tag it for uncontroversial deletion, PROD, which bypasses a broader input, restricting it to deleting admin and those who visit CAT:PROD. I have no idea why anyone would at an AfD discussion argue that
I don't speak or read French. ... As for me, sources I can neither evaluate nor use are not sources at all, to my mind. ... I'm doing the right thing and pushing for deletion.
- when they are presented with 14 ((cite book))s. Both Everyking and Josh Milburn echoed my surprise each in their own way. Where's the logic? I have never seen such "argument" used at AfD before, it certainly falls flat of WP:DEL-REASON and is contrary to both the word and the spirit of WP:NOENG, but as closures are based on "reasonable, logical, policy-based arguments" I doubt such argument will ever be given much weight. - Thanks for the response. I appreciate your thoroughness. Chris Troutman (talk) 20:48, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
