Thank you for OA'ing as well! It was a pleasure as always. I'm looking forward to next semester! (This kitty is super cute :3)
Fun Fact: The Mayan calendar (Q2012) did not correctly predict the end of the world nor the end of Q items as Wikidata (Q2013) went on to host Wikipedia links this year.

Happy Holidays from the dev team! Have a great time and continue being awesome ;-)
Improved and added a lot of tests
Worked on displaying qualifiers in the non-JavaScript UI
No longer displaying the table of contents from item/property pages if there would be less than 3 entries in it
Caching and database improvements
Worked on preventing the import of wikitext into the main and property namespace
More work on quantities UI

Update, expand and translate d:Wikidata:Introduction to make it easier for newcomers to understand what Wikidata is all about.
Add the file and translate namespaces to the list of namespaces excluded from Wikibase Client's linking functionality and enable the "Add links" dialog for pages without language links on commons. (#58903)
Fun Fact: According to Wikidata, this is the year of 2004 (Q2014)
DevelopmentWord from John
To give this section some life, since the development team had their holidays last week meaning nothing really got done (let them have one week off at least), I'll say a few words. 2014 is a new year and thus a new start, over the last year Wikidata celebrated its first birthday which brought reflection over what Wikidata had accomplish. Therefore I want to use the start of 2014 to reflect what Wikidata can do. For my personal over view see this page. For the summary, while it is meant to be a weekly simple update, I feel this can be used a lot more effective to put across not only what happened on Wikidata but things about Wikidata on other wikis, I am hoping to start a section over this within the next few weeks. If you have any suggestions for the summary, feel free to drop me a message at meta or Wikidata. Thanks.
Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!
The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:
Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%
Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC
New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers
Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors
Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration
Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

Wikidata weekly summary #96
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
I my name is Cynthia. I am a student in the JHU MS in Biotechnology program. This is my first time working on Wikipedia for a course. I was slightly worried because I found it slightly difficult to navigate through the different pages, however I think I am starting to get the hang of it! I'm really looking forward to learning more through this course. --User:Cchandu1
Hi, Cynthia, nice to meet you! One comment: it looks like you both hit the "new section" button and added a header ("Introduction") manually. When you click "New section", it creates a header for you, so you don't have to type one in yourself. Good luck in the course! Klortho (talk) 09:56, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Oh yes, I didn't realize I did that and now I'm not sure how to remove it. Cchandu1 (talk) 03:24, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Question about a missing preference
Hi Klortho,
I am in the process of adjusting my "Watchlist" and "E-mail" preferences and I seem to be missing two items. The first item is the ability to "Add pages and files I move to my watchlist". The second item is "E-mail me when my user talk page is changed". Would you please let me know the best way for me to add these two items? Thank you!
DHayes14 (talk) 21:41, 13 February 2014 (UTC)Deborah
DHayes14, your description of the instructions doesn't match what I see when I visit your course page, here. What I see is that the item "add pages and files I move to my watchlist" has a note next to it to ignore it if that option doesn't show up for you, and "E-mail me when my user talk page is changed" is not among the instructions. Can you tell me what page you are looking at? Klortho (talk) 01:27, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
At the beginning of the semester I printed out a hard copy of the Wikipedia Course Discussion page. This morning I compared my print out with the version that is currently on the web and it appears that there have been some changes... and my copy is outdated. Please disregard my question about the "user talk page" preferences. Thank you!
Okay. Don't forget to sign in before you do any editing (it looks like you weren't signed in when you left the comment above. Also, you should indent your responses with colons at the beginning of the lines. One additional colon for each response-level. There are instructions in the "Units 3-4" material. You can now add labels in your language from within Reasonator. Technically oAuth is used. It now takes just one click to add a label in your language.
My name is Misha Mehta and I am in my second semester of MS Biotechnology program at JHU. I'm really enjoying studying here and working on such unique assignments that I never knew could be included in expanding a graduate study experience. I use Wikipedia anytime I'm in doubt about almost anything under the sun and now I will be able to contribute in topics that matter so immensely. This is such an exciting thing and I sure am looking forward to working on this platform with you and other batch-mates. Nice to meet you!
Hi, Misha, nice to meet you! I'm glad you are so enthusiastic about the project, and I really hope you enjoy it. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions. Klortho (talk) 04:07, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello Klortho! My group partner and I decided to select Base Flipping for our Molecular Bio project at JHU. I have checked with Dr. Ogg prior to submitting my initial assessment and she said it was okay. However, this topic is not included on the "article 81" page, may I edit the table by adding that topic in order to claim me? Let me know what should we do in order to get that done. Thank you Ana Amontei2 (talk) 21:15, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, please go ahead and add it. Let me know if you need help. Klortho (talk) 22:05, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Done! Thank you Amontei2 (talk) 22:36, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Hi Klortho, my partner and I would like to pursue a topic on [Molecular Paleontology] for our WikiPedia project. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, it has been claimed by 7 different WikiProjects, including as a Mid-importance topic for the Molecular and Cellular Biology community. If approved, some of the sections that immediately come to mind that we would likely cover would include techniques for sequencing DNA preserved in fossils, techniques involved in isolating and amplifying the DNA, information about some of the history of the subject, information about the oldest organisms which have been sequenced and other notable organisms, environmental conditions needed to preserve DNA for long periods of time, and challenges inherent within this field. The topic of Molecular Paleontology is directly related to the work I am looking to pursue in my PhD, and my partner is interested in the topic as well. Will you approve our article topic?
PaleoBioJackie (talk) 01:24, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
I see that Dr. Ogg has already responded to you on her talk page. Klortho (talk) 07:23, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Question regarding adding videos from another owner
Hi Klortho! I found a video and an animation that I wanted to use for my group project in molecular biology. The wiki video page is very detailed and I wasn't sure if I can do this and whether or not I need to contact the owner of the content for permission. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!Previte01 (talk) 02:38, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes, you would need to contact the creators. I'd encourage you to do it, because most of the time, in my experience, people are happy to have their work shared. They would have to agree to release their content under a license that allows reuse, such as Creative Commons - attribution (CC-BY). For the Youtube video, the author could just select that by checking a box, as Youtube now makes that easy. For the animation, you'll have to find out who the author is, and get them to go to the Creative Commons site and use their tools to associate the license with the content. Let me know if you need more help. Klortho (talk) 17:20, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Question regarding Images copyrights
Hi Klortho, my group partner and I are wondering about some copyright info in regards to the use of images on our molecular bio project. Are we allowed to use images from our text? Do the copyright laws allow that? And how do we find out if, for example, an original article from 1994 is open access or if we aren't allowed to use those images?
Thank you for your help. Amontei2 (talk) 18:41, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
What "text" are you referring to? If you mean your textbook, then the answer is probably "no". In general, you have to look to see if there is a license that allows re-use, and that is pretty rare on textbooks. As far as a journal article goes, sometimes those are open access, and sometimes not. Again, you have to look for a license statement. If you send me a link to the article (or a PubMed ID) I can check it for you. Klortho (talk) 22:27, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I was referring to our texbook. Okay, so once I identify the images I will let you know if I need help. Thank you Amontei2 (talk) 14:15, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
You would have to contact the authors, and get them to release the image under either CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license. You'd have to get that in writing. I haven't tried to do this often, so I don't know how likely they'd be to agree. It would probably be easier if you started out by looking for images that are already openly-licensed. We put some links to some resources for how to do this in your course page, under Unit 6. Klortho (talk) 03:03, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
Wikidata weekly summary #100
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
Added more details to the diffs of time and geocoordinate values (will show which globe the coordinate is on and so on now as well)
More work on badges by Bene* - most work left is now in the GUI part of it
Removed unneeded and unused permissions/rights
Fixed a bug concerning spaces in quantities (bugzilla:61911)
Started work on taking ranks into account for queries, the property parser function and Lua. (By default only preferred values should be used if available. If not available then it should use values with rank normal.)
test2.wikipedia.org and test.wikipedia.org now use test.wikidata.org as their data repository, instead of wikidata.org
Started work on WikibaseInternalSerialization component
Question about finding if image is available for commercial use.
Hi Klortho,
While researching and trying to find images for my article, I found most to be from textbooks or teaching websites. I was wondering if there is no copyright mark imprinted on the picture would it be ok to use or will I need to contact the textbook company? Some of the images from these websites contain very little information on where the image came from. They are great images and far better than any I have found using the websites listed in our unit 6. I was surprised actually to not find that many images that is commerically available on those websites. To give you an example here is a link to a website with a few images that I'm interested in using https://courses.stu.qmul.ac.uk/SMD/Kb/microanatomy/humandev/index.htm. Some images contain the copyright mark and some don't. I just want to make sure the images I choose for my article will be ok use. Please advise. Thanks in advance!Tatabox8 (talk) 03:36, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Hi, Tatabox8. No, I'm sorry, but the absence of a copyright indication doesn't mean that you can use an image. By default, creative works are copyright, and have to be assumed to be "all rights reserved". That's why the open-access movement is so important! But, you should be able to find good images for your topic, if you expend a little more time and effort searching for them. If not, one thing that students have done in past courses is to draw their own cartoon images using popular drawing package like Inkscape. Klortho (talk) 16:05, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Klortho, I have actually spent over two hours clicking the image links that offer free commercial use pictures and surprisingly there isn't very many free spermatocyte pictures that is not already used in the article. Many are from studies and won't really work for our article. I will probably have to try to draw my own image incorporating all the information I would like in the picture. Thanks for that suggestion!Tatabox8 (talk) 01:37, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
Hi, again. You wrote, "clicking the image links". What image links? Where?
Here are a couple more suggestions, in case you still have energy to try:
* Try this image search in PMC. Not all of the images there are truly open-access, but a lot are. If you see one you like, you can check to see if it is PLoS or Biomed Central (BMC). Even if not, it might have an okay license; check the article for CC-BY (Creative Commons Attribution) or CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution Share-alike).
* Try another tack: this search in PMC gives you a list of all the OA articles. Follow the article links if you see a title that looks promising. Make sure to click the "PubReader" link, because that gives you a nice image strip at the bottom, so you can see at a glance what the images are, and hover your mouse to see the full image.
* For either of the above, narrow the search to be more specific by adding terms with "AND ..." (make sure you use all caps)
Good luck! Klortho (talk) 01:58, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
Changed the ((property)) parser function and Lua’s mw.wikibase.entity.formatPropertyValues to only return the statements ranked as preferred or if none are available the ones ranked as normal (This will probably go live on April 25th.)
Worked on improving page load time further by reducing the number of reloads during page loading
Made diffs for time and geocoordinates more complete and prettier
Continued research for user interface redesign
Tpt worked on optionally showing links to other sister projects in the client’s sidebar (bugzilla:54374)
Wrote a fix for Wikidata changes not showing up in the client’s watchlist (bugzilla:62149)
Updated a major chunk of our inline code documentation
Continued discussing technical details about how coordinates should be stored in Wikibase
Hi Klortho, I have been working on my wiki Article and trying to rearrange the content bar to after the first section right before the formation of spermatocyte. I'm not sure how to get it to go there. Could you help me out with the command? Thanks in advance!Tatabox8 (talk) 06:10, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
The table of contents is placed automatically, after the "lead" section. The problem you have is that you have added an unnecessary header, "==Spermatocyte==", before the lead, so that the Mediawiki software doesn't recognize it as a lead. In other words, you shouldn't have a header at the very top of your article. Just remove that, and it should be fine. Klortho (talk) 17:06, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
I tried that and was not able to get the contents bar to show up. Perhaps it's not showing up because the article doesn't have that many sections.Tatabox8 (talk) 22:03, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Adding images
Hi Klortho,
I am just wondering on how to add images to Wikipedia. Is it okay to add them if we reference them? Thanks! Gkaltam (talk) 17:28, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Could you be more specific in your question, please? There's a lot of information in the course page about adding images -- have you reviewed that? What specifically is not clear? Thanks. Klortho (talk) 17:34, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
If I wanted to use an image from Wikimedia Commons, do I have to download it first and re-upload it? Or is there a way that I can directly link the image to the page? Gkaltam (talk) 17:41, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
No, you just include it the same way, regardless of whether the image is on Wikipedia or Commons.
Andromeda as it appears in the night sky, with the superimposed figure.
Here is a blank template that you can just fill in every time you want to put an image somewhere: [[File:FILENAME|thumb|RIGHT/LEFT|SIZEpx|CAPTION]]. For example, the code [[File:Andromeda annotated.png|thumb|right|400px|Andromeda as it appears in the night sky, with the superimposed figure.]] produces the image to the right.
I see now. Thank you so much for your help! Gkaltam (talk) 19:01, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Starting a new article page
Hi Klortho,
We're working on starting a new article page for Molecular paleontology and I believe we are suppose to contact you before we start moving things onto the article page. We have a general outline already made for the article and would just like to know what we can do now.
Thanks! Cchandu1 (talk) 03:28, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
The draft page is User:PaleoBioJackie/sandbox, is that right? Please also remind me, when is the last day of Unit 8? I see that in that sandbox, you have quite a few references and an outline. I would feel better if you had some actual content (prose) before moving into the article space. You should try to at least write a first draft of the lead section (the part that comes first, before the table of contents. Klortho (talk) 04:16, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes we started drafting everything on that page. I also started working on the lead section and I can post that shortly. Also, the last day I believe is today for unit 8. Cchandu1 (talk) 13:04, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Okay, let me know when you are ready. I do think it should have at least some prose content before we move it to the article space. Klortho (talk) 19:31, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Okay, it is moved. Congratulations on your first Wikipedia article! Klortho (talk) 02:17, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!
Hello there,
I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!
Reduced page load time significantly once again. Page load time was cut to roughly 2/3. For now we’re happy with the resulting page load times. We’ll start concentrating on other areas of the user interface now.
Fixed faulty selection handling when adding a property using the keyboard (bugzilla:62868)
Worked on fixing issues with handling of spaces in quantities (bugzilla:62567)
Fixed miscount of Wikidata changes on the client watchlist (bugzilla:45812)
Wrote new browser tests for special pages using the Cucumber and Selenium frameworks
Improved error formatting, localisation and handling. We will work on error message wording next to make them more understandable.
Worked on the code which propagates page moves from the clients into Wikidata as a preparation for allowing page deletions to appear on Wikidata
Made the Wikibase extension work with the new “Compact language links” Beta feature and a bit more independent from the UniversalLanguageSelector in general
The student team working on the entity suggester has finished the first version of it. The code is being reviewed now and is hopefully ready for deployment soon. Once it is deployed it will show you what new properties you could add to an item.
Hi Klortho, Is there a way to edit a name reference to add a weblink to the journal article?Tatabox8 (talk) 06:21, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes, when you create the reference, add the URL in the "URL" field of the citation dialog box. If it's a reference that you've already added, then you have to add it manually, like this: <ref>((cite journal|last=Maloney|first=C|title=JATSPack and JATSPAN, a packaging format and infrastructure for the NLM/NISO Journal Archiving Tag Suite (JATS).|journal=Balisage series on markup technologies|date=2011|volume=7|pmid=21866248|url=http://icanhascheezburger.com))</ref>, which would look like this: [1]
Good, to know that I can still edit and add the URL. Thanks for your help!Tatabox8 (talk) 17:21, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
Polysomy article
Hello,
Thank you for your suggestions on our polysomy talk page! I updated the wikilinks and I’ve contacted the publisher for the image to inquire about the copyright parameters. Polysomy types pentasomy-decosomy actually do not have wiki links! We will be adding prose from here on out and will water down the lead definitions. Our outline will be expanded upon in great detail with 30+ references by the end of the semester. We will definitely include the chromosomal_duplication article link- thank you for the suggestion! We followed the format for polyploidy which is a B Class article and is a very similar topic. Based on that, we will probably keep the layout for the headings. Thank you for taking the time to give feedback! Ssumpf (talk) 13:06, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Okay, it all sounds great! Keep in mind that my comments are just suggestions, and if you don't agree with any of them, feel free to push back. Klortho (talk) 14:06, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Wikidata weekly summary #104
Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
Hi Klortho, I would like to add a wikitable from the spermatogenesis article under the stages section to our spermatocyte article. I thought it would be helpful for people that look up this topic since ploidy was an issue brought up in both articles and would make that topic more transparent. I did discuss the ploidy in the text, but sometimes people understand better with a table for visual. The orignal table from the aritlce did not have any sources of where they obtain the info from, but I do have a source for the info. I can create my own table, but it would be very similar. I'm not sure if we can copy a table from wiki so, I wanted to check with you first. If it's possible, how would I cite the table?Tatabox8 (talk) 05:50, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
That's a pretty nice table, but I'm inclined to suggest that it's not quite appropriate for your article, because it has a broader scope. It covers all of the stages of spermatogenesis, which includes other cell types, including your specific one, the spermatocyte, but also including others. There are no issues with copyright violation, if you do want to copy content from another article, but the issue really is about keeping the articles distinct and useful: each one should limit it's scope so that there's not too much overlapping info. So if you want to create your own table, go ahead, but keep that in mind. On the other hand, some of the figures in that article definitely might be useful in yours, and I'd encourage you to consider reusing one or more of them, if they can help illustrate your article's content. Hope that's helpful! Klortho (talk) 14:38, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
I'm still debating whether I will add a table, but I would not include the entire table just what is relevant to my article. I do mention ploidy in the article, but I thought a table would give readers the information in another format that may be more helpful to them. I will definitely reuse some of the pictures.Tatabox8 (talk) 01:14, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
Remove named reference
Hi Klortho, I deleted a named reference and now I have cite error in my reference section. How do I remove it? The orignal source website has not responded to me after two weeks of waiting and I found a new credible source with same information.Tatabox8 (talk) 05:34, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
Your named reference was used in two places, and you deleted the version that included all the data, without also deleting the other instance. See this edit. You deleted <ref name=trs>((cite web|title=....</ref>, but not (later in the article) <ref name=trs />. Note that AnomieBot has fixed it, but filling in the data into the ref tag that you left there. You should check the results to make sure everything's the way you want it, now. If you intended to remove the reference everywhere, then you'll have to delete the one that's still there now. Uploading image
Hello Klortho,
I made a timeline using powerpoint for the Molecular Paleontology article page. As I was rereading the guidelines for uploading images and I saw that it says to try to not use any text? I essentially used the same dates that we have in the history section and was going to cite the sources when I uploaded the image but I just wanted to make sure how to proceed.
Hi Klortho, I added some external links and I was testing them out. When I click on them I am not redirected to the link or website addressed I entered. It goes to an error page. I try coping and pasting the link into the web browser and it works, but when it's associated with wiki it doesn't. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something else I'm suppose to add? If you wanted to take a look I have the spermatocyte article. Thanks!Tatabox8 (talk) 01:55, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
You have a slash at the end of each one of your links (imm. after ".html"). Is that supposed to be there? Klortho (talk) 03:04, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I deleted the slash and that fixed the problem. :)Tatabox8 (talk) 03:46, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:
This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.
We have more stuff coming up in May and June, so make sure to keep a watch on the DC meetup page. As always, if you have any recommendations or requests, please leave a note on the talk page.
There are a few meetups in DC this month, including an edit-a-thon later this month. Check it out:
On Thursday, May 15 come to our evening WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space in Dupont Circle. If you're available Thursday evening, feel free to join us!
Or if you prefer a Saturday night dinner gathering, we also have our May Meetup at Capitol City Brewing Company. (Beer! Non-beer things too!)
Looking for a cool university project with impact? We have some of them around Wikidata - not just for computer science students. Get in touch with Lydia.
Had a lot to think about and recap from the Zürich Hackathon, e.g. things regarding search, suggestions as well as the user interface redesign
Started doing mockups of the new user interface (Nothing to show yet, sorry!)
Setup an autogenerating code documentation instance on labs at wbdoc.wmflabs.org. Hint: Submitting patches that make the inline code documentation even better is a good starting point to get involved in coding
Worked on new datatype monolingual text (basically a string with an associated language)
Reworked a hell lot of “change operations” code that’s responsible for each and every edit as well as validating user input and API requests, for example denying empty descriptions and finding and blocking unnecessary duplications
Checked all the new Beta features that the teams in San Francisco are developing and made sure they work with Wikidata
Our efforts to make Wikidata faster broke some gadgets so we helped fixing them. Sorry for the breakage!
Dug into odd display bugs with the MonoBook skin and attempted to fix them (bugzilla:64741)
More testing on simple queries
Tpt worked on making inter-project links in the sidebar a beta-feature
I am seeking input on your experience as a mentor to new Wikipedians. This survey is designed to provide insight for the development of a new mentorship support tool on Wikipedia. If you have a moment, please take this survey, it should not take more than 10 minutes of your time to complete.
Editors may now include their ORCID identifiers (and others, such as VIAF) on their user pages, using the Authority control template. You can register for an ORCID at http://orcid.org
Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:
On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
More cleanup for the coming switch to WikibaseDataModel 1.0.
Icinga Dispatch Lag monitoring scripts, including IRC notifier bot, have been tested and are ready for Ops implementation. This should give us quicker notifications in case the notifications to Wikipedia and co about changes on Wikidata are slow again.
The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed
Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.
It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitzgmail.com. Thanks and cheers, Jake Ocaasi via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:41, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
GenderCounter uses Wikidata to provide an accurate service with distinguishing male and female names
ca.wikipedia found a nice way to use Wikidata. They're comparing their living people to Wikidata to see if any of them have a date of death there. They're then put into a category for review: ca:Categoria:Persones vives a revisar
Continued working on full redirect support for items. It touches a surprising big chunk of the code base.
Continued working on the QueryEngine code base and it’s data type support.
Fixed and updated the most recent implementation of the property and item selector widget, e.g. a MonoBook specific bug.
Pushed along reviews and deployment of the entity suggester code that will make suggestions for new properties to be added to items. Our hope is to have it through performance review for the next deployment.
Hey everyone, it's rare these small sections come along but there is a bit of interesting news to get across which one line under 'noteworthy stuff' won't be the best for. For the next 6 summaries, they will be translatable at Wikidata. This is an interesting idea which was first proposed on the delivery page and on Wikidata-l by Base. This is purely a trial and if you all want the summaries to remain translatable, please participate! You can view the first translated summary (hopefully) here! Also sorry for this one being late :)
The Great American Wiknic and other events in July
I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!
July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.
As part of the Outreach Program for Women d:User:User:Thepwnco is continuing improving all help pages to help new users understand Wikidata better. At the same time w:User:Discoveranjali is helping with social media outreach and creating presentations workshops about Wikidata.
More work on redirects. They are taking shape. Done with much of the groundwork. We've seen the first one! :D
Continued work on user interface redesign mockups
Monolingual text datatype is also taking shape but needs more user interface love to make it intuitive.
Investigated making Wikidata.org its own client so you can for example get access to better Lua functions for access to an item's label on a discussion page. Outcome: Should be possible but needs some more work.
Two new GuidedTours (aka interactive tutorials) have been released—we now have one on editing items and one on editing statements! Both tours are available from the Wikidata:Tours portal and feedback can be left on the talk page at Wikidata_talk:Tours. The work was a combined effort of User:Bene* and Outreach Program for Women intern User:Thepwnco.
We passed another milestone \o/ 10 million items now have an "instance of" or "subclass of" statement making it easy to tell what the item is about.
Bene* worked with the dev team this week. He pushed forward support for storing badges (eg featured article) on Wikidata and implemented the first two guided tours.
CTRL+ click and middle click on a search result in the entity selector now opens the result in a new tab.
Further progress on redirects
Fixed a number of annoyances with the entity selector
Continued work on mockups for new user interface
Investigated what issues come up if we make wikidata.org its own client. Things look good so we will probably enable it soonish. This will mean you can link Wikidata pages in items and access the data in them on other pages on Wikidata.
Sorry for the last minute update, but our friends at the DC Historical Society have scheduled a Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War battle fought in the District. The event will last from noon to 2 PM on Wednesday, July 30. Hope you can make it!
Wikidata's new Main page is almost ready to go live, but is still in need of a visually-appealing banner! Got an idea for an eye-catching design that represents what Wikidata's all about? Submit proposals before August 11 at d:Wikidata:Portal Redesign/Banner
Finished a large number of new features and got them ready for roll-out. More in this email.
Wikibase made a big step forward to finally switch to DataModel 1.0.
Improved support for entity IDs bigger than 2 billion (32 bit integer).
We had to adapt Wikibase to some major changes (more major than usual, partly caused by discussions at Wikimania) in MediaWiki core: The default Vector skin became it’s own component and the ResourceLoader got some small but important updates.
Continued work on refactoring code of the user interface to make it ready for new design
Wrote a script to get number of users having wikidata in their recent changes/watchlist from the database

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon
The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.
If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.
When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC
