Welcome to WIKISOO

Hello and welcome to the Writing Wikipedia Articles course (#WIKISOO)! We look forward to meeting you in the first class on 25 February (Americas)/26 Feb (Asia/Australia). By now you should have received an introductory email with some details about the course. If you can't find it, there's an archived copy of the email at this link.

To attend the live session, please check our course home page for instructions and the link. We recommend logging into Blackboard Collaborate (the live class software we use) before the day of class, to be sure it's working. (More tips on the home page.)

If taking the course in self-paced mode, please come say hello on the course talk page so we know who you are! Thanks for signing up, and we'll see you Tuesday! - Pete (talk) 06:15, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Second WIKISOO class starts soon!

Hi! Just a quick reminder that the second WIKISOO class starts in about 3 hours. Even if you missed Week 1, please join us at this link for the live webinar - ideally about 15 minutes early to test your mic/speakers. If you haven’t finished up your Week 1 homework, there’s still time; post any questions on the class talk page! You can also watch a video of last week’s class on YouTube (earlier audio problems have been corrected). Feel free to contact me on my talk page with questions anytime! - WIKISOO co-instructor Sara FB (talk) 22:06, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

WIKISOO Week 3

Hi Giso6150, we look forward to seeing you in class in a few hours. We look forward to seeing you in class in a few hours. Here's the link to our Week 3 class page and to the live webinar.

PLEASE NOTE: If you're not in the USA, please double-check the class time. We have gone on Daylight Savings Time (also known as Summer Time) in the USA, so for some of you the class time will be an hour earlier. (If your country goes on Summer Time in the coming weeks, you will want to check again!)

This week we are going to start off with some basic review of all we've covered. So if you've been feeling behind or confused by all the details, we'll make sure we've got your questions answered before forging ahead! See you soon, -Pete (talk) 16:30, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Jânio Quadros

Hi Giso,

I didn't mean simply to revert your edit to Jânio Quadros; It's just that I was in the middle of clarifying it when I got interrupted. I've finished it off now, perhaps you'd like to check it out for me. Bagunceiro (talk) 12:20, 28 March 2014 (UTC) No worries! I just now switched the order in the two boxes. I think it looks good! Thanks, —12:36, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Week 6 of WIKISOO

Hi Giso6150! Just checking in as we head into the final week of the Writing Wikipedia Articles class. You can look through last week's ether pad notes, check out your homework assignments from Week 5, and watch last week's lecture on YouTube - all right here. Check out my note from last week (above) if you're still diving into your Final Project... or head over to the course talk page to see if anyone else is having the same issues you are! Looking forward to seeing you in the last live webinar of the session tomorrow. Big WikiLove. -Sara FB (talk) 23:23, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Brilliant Idea Barnstar
Hey giso6150, I'm sharing this barnstar to express appreciation as a fellow classmate for the great ideas and suggestions you contributed in the March 2014 WIKISOO class. I learned a lot! Litjade (talk) 11:26, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks @Litjade:!

Thank you!

Thank you @Giso6150: I appreciate if you proofread my translation because I'm sure it has a lot of mistakes. But I have to warn you, it is not a literate translation, some things are not the same. When I'm ready I'll let you know. --Luisalvaz (talk) 04:34, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

@Luisalvaz: Literal translations are too difficult… it’s to be expected. I look forward to looking it over. —giso6150 (talk) 13:07, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Edit-a-thon in Madison

I saw that you live in Madison (based on your userpage), so if you're interested, I wanted to invite you to a humanities edit-a-thon in the Madison Public Library on Friday, April 25th (1:30–3:30). It'll be on the shorter side and is aimed at new editors, but I hope to see you there. More information is available on the 2014 UW Conference on the Public Humanities website. Let me know if you have any questions czar  04:02, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Peacekeeping units at Favelas in Brazil

Giso, you know this article about UPPs at favelas in Brazil? If you want to create a article in Portuguese, taking that by reference, I will help you with Portuguese language improvements (not logged, only as IP). Please, answer to me only at my talk page in English. Regards!
PauloMSimoes (talk) 02:58, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

PauloMSimoes (talk) 23:40, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Bem achado, amigo! —giso6150 (talk) 00:51, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for creating the stubs!

Hey there, I've noticed that you've created stub articles on districts of Sao Paulo, and I would just like to tell you that you're doing a good job! Although one thing to note is that the stub tags should be placed at the bottom of the page, not the top. Thanks! Darylgolden(talk) 00:46, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and started fixing those pages, so don't worry about it. Darylgolden(talk) 00:52, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Liberdade street market

Thank you very much for cleaning up the article Liberdade street market. I was keeping it in my to-do list for a future major edit, but since you already done it you saved me quite some time to dedicate to other things. I took the opportunity to make some further edits and remove a few promotional parts, I think the article is quite OK now. Victão Lopes Fala! 05:59, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Page of the European Federation of Psychology Students' Associations

European Federation of Psychology Students' Associations

Dear Giso6150. You marked the EFPSA page as advert and having lack of sources. I agree that more sources (apart from the home-page of EFPSA) are necessary and I'm working on it, but could you point out what makes it an advert in your opinion? I meant no such thing. Kind regards, Tkivisik (talk) 13:44, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Tkivisik, I used the "advertising" tag for lack of other options, so I agree with you that it doesn't *quite* capture the tone. Once you have incorporated more citations—especially anything from the news media—the tone will probably become more encyclopedic. This is strong start. If I were you, I would look at similar articles (e.g., Category:Student organizations, etc.) to see what makes them good or bad. Good luck! —giso6150 (talk) 14:02, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
I have now updated the page with several new references, but added new text only in a few places. Would you be that kind to give it a look and comment about it? Tkivisik (talk) 23:03, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Tkivisik, I think your edits looked good and I removed the tags. Well done! —giso6150 (talk) 02:36, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the comments and revision. Tkivisik (talk) 11:35, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Info needed

Is there a clear and easy to understand explanation somewhere to explain what you are doing with categories by country? JarrahTree 00:49, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi, @JarrahTree: The presence of ((Category diffuse)) on Category:Categories by country and this line from WP:DUPCAT:

Non-diffusing subcategories should be identified with a template on the category page:

This seemed like a clear backlog situation, given these guidelines. Let me know if you see this differently. giso6150 (talk) 02:13, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Fair enough, thanks for that - as I have a very large number of cats on my watch list showing up with your edits.
Even if it seems obvious to you what you are doing, there is a need for the less category literate to understand, lest they are what one might call not sure of the meaning of diffuse or suffer from similar complaints. Now there is a reference point if anyone might stumble on the backlog fixup and have no idea what is going on. Thanks, and have a safe new year

Renaming categories

Hi, I do not object to renaming Category:Skeptics by country to Category:Skeptics by nationality, but you have obtained the right result by the wrong method. Please use the process at WP:Categories for discussion in future. This has the following advantages:

  1. The change waits for consensus, in case you have overlooked some policy or precedent;
  2. The work of moving the contents gets done by a bot, so it's less work for you;
  3. The talk page also gets moved – you have left the old one at Category talk:Skeptics by country;
  4. the interwiki links for different languages also get updated - you have left these attached to Category:Skeptics by country;
  5. the history of the category page would be kept in one place, rather than split to a new page.

The simplest solution now would be for me to move the old page and overwrite the new one that you created, if you don't mind. Alternatively, either of us could edit the interwiki data manually, following the "Edit links" at the bottom left of the old page. – Fayenatic London 07:47, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for explaining that. I will refrain from repeating that kind of thing in the future. I think you should fix it the way that you proposed (by overwriting), since that would be easiest. Much appreciated, @Fayenatic london:! giso6150 (talk) 16:27, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, thanks –  DoneFayenatic London 17:12, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Category:Brazil river stubs

Please note that I intentionally didn't create ‹The template Category link is being considered for merging.› Category:Brazil river stubs yet, although I certainly think that I would have created it later. The reasoin is that, as of now, there are only 19 articles tagged with the category's tag, and we generally wait until there are 60. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:15, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

@Od Mishehu: Yeah, sorry about that. I was planning to have a minimum of 60 that night but got pulled away. There are 65 now and I will continue adding some this weekend. giso6150 (talk) 14:42, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
FYI, I've started to create upmerged stub tags for Brazilian states, to eventually become their own categories - see ((AmazonasBR-river-stub)) for an example; please use the name as it appears in the geo-stub category tree. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:44, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Copyright problem: Colégio Anglo Drummond

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Colégio Anglo Drummond, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! Cordless Larry (talk) 05:33, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

@Cordless Larry: My edits were a good faith attempt to clean up an article and all of my words are my own. I did not translate the page that I cited word for word or in any other way violate copyright. What exactly did you base your decision on? Thank you. giso6150 (talk) 13:36, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, and sorry if this proves to be a false alarm. I certainly don't think you deliberately introduced copyright material. However, when I put the source text through a translator, the outcome was pretty close to the text of the article. This close paraphrasing, combined with the fact that almost all of the source text was used, was what made me flag it for investigation. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:03, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for your determination and dedication to help the encyclopedia grow. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

Editor Daniel Sousa submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Giso6150 for his outstanding work with WikiProject Brazil, reviving a mostly inactive project with the creation of taskforces, articles and page assessment. His meticulous work with creating new categories is also noteworthy, having a patience few have in organizing pages. With over 31000 edits and perfect use of edit summaries I think Giso deserves to be Editor of the Week.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

@Magiciandude: Yes, I think it would be a great idea. I think enlisting folks from WP:WikiProject Olympics would be key. There's been some early discussions on their Talk page and a bit of chatter here as well. I haven't had the time to kickstart anything myself, but I would do my best to help anyone that was inclined to get something like that started. giso6150 (talk) 03:05, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

10,000 Challenge

Hi, I was wondering if you would like to collaborate long term in trying to reach a 10,000 article improvement/creation drive for Brazil/South/Latin America at Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge like we're doing for the UK at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge? Regional contests fuel the drive but it's a permanent goal now. Would you and Brazilian wikipedians be interested in running a similar thing and some country contests/editathons to increase output? We could do a 1000 Challenge for Brazil to start with? Comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject South America if interested.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:09, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: Sorry it's taken me so long to respond; I have been very preoccupied with my job recently. Your idea sounds really intriguing. If you haven't already done so, I would suggest posting on the WP Brazil talk page to see if anyone else might have the time and energy right now to contribute. For me, just because of other commitments, it will have to be a no for the near future. Cheers. giso6150 (talk) 11:56, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

Understand, I'm thinking now more on a Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Brazil), specifically for Brazil. I created Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic) only the other day, and look at the content ;-) But I know Aymatth2 thinks it will attract a bunch of people from the US or UK spreading colonial nonsense rather than able people from Brazil itself or editors who can write decent content. Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 350 articles in just six days. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:22, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

New deal for page patrollers

Hi Giso6150,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello Giso6150. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New Page Review - newsletter

Hello Giso6150,
Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 806 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.
Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.

New Page Reviewers are asked to be especially on the look out 08:00-20:00 UTC (that's local London time - check your USA and AUS times) on Thursday 8 December for new pages. The BBC together with Wikimedia UK is holding a large 12-hour editathon. Many new articles and drafts are expected. See BBC 100 Women 2016: How to join our edit-a-thon. Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Giso6150,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 806 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 806 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Giso6150,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 806 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

DJs category

Just curious. Why would you add the "DJs" category to this article Video Turntablism? - TheMagnificentist 13:44, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

It seems I was quickly working through a backlog of uncategorized articles and made a snap decision to add the category so that it would be exposed to someone with some expertise to place it in a better category. I claim no knowledge of the subject but don't regret making a small change that removed it from the backlog of uncategorized articles. Cheers. giso6150 (talk) 01:17, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

About WikiProject:Brazil

Hi Giso6150, I noticed you are quite active on WikiProject Brazil. What do you think about working towards a reform of that WikiProject, and removing old users from the "Active users" list? I'm not sure about the policy about messaging all those users, but we could try to prune that list, and then we can have a better idea of the number of active members, and how we can coordinate the WikiProject! Best wishes, User:Tetizeraz. Send me a ✉️ ! 04:13, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi, @Tetizeraz: Thanks for reaching out. I was very involved in WP:Brazil a couple years ago. I created some of the task forces and redesigned the pages. Editor participation has generally been sporadic and limited to a small number of contributors… I think this is true for many WikiProjects. The concept of a WikiProject is a nice idea, perhaps, but can be a little more formal than many contributors need or want. I like it as a central place to talk about Brazil-related articles or to post ideas, etc., but I know that the project pages themselves aren't regularly monitored by many people—myself included. I would hesitate to remove anyone's name, but you're welcome to propose a system of marking users as Inactive (like they do for Admins: see WP:INACTIVE). giso6150 (talk) 13:31, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
Hey Giso6150, thanks for answering! I understand. I have been looking the more active WikiProjects to get a sense of how things could be improved. I'm not really active on wiki-en, but I'd like help coordinate things around here when possible. Oh, and thanks for your suggestion about the admin thing. Cheers! User:Tetizeraz. NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Giso6150, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.

List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Giso6150,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Reliable Sources for NPP

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Giso6150,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Giso6150,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion

Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Giso6150,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 806 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add ((NoACEMM)) to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:15, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Giso6150,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week

Hello there. This is an invitation to join the 50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week. £250 (c. $310) is being given away in May, June and July with £20 worth of prizes to give away every week for most articles destubbed. Each week there is a different region of focus, including weeks dedicated entirely to the Caribbean, one to Brazil, and another to Central America, though half the prize will still be rewarded for articles on any subject. There's a potential £120 to be won in total for destubbing on any subject or region of your choice. Sign up if you want to contribute at least one of the weeks or support the idea! † Encyclopædius 12:15, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Giso6150,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.
