Proposed deletion of Randall Archer[edit]

The article Randall Archer has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the ((prod blp)) tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Deletion discussion about Randall Archer[edit]

Hello, BlueFlame101,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Randall Archer should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Randall Archer .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Notability and articles[edit]

Hey, I thought I'd explain why the page was going to get deleted. It's ultimately because while Archer is known for The Collection, he hasn't received any coverage in places that Wikipedia would consider a reliable source.

Places like IMDb aren't considered to be a WP:RS because it's a site that people can edit relatively easily. At most it can be used like a routine database listing, but even then there are people who will contest that material. Part of this is because anyone can edit it. I always like to use Gretel Ashzinger as an example of someone who manipulated IMDb in an attempt to gain some publicity. She added a profile that stated that she was going to play She-Hulk. This might not have been as easily detected except that she also made claims of having won some pretty big awards on her profile as well, which was what tipped people off that it was a hoax. It was eventually removed, but not before a few outlets started reporting on the claims. In any case, that's kind of why IMDb can't be used as a source to show notability.

When it comes to blogs, those are sort of problematic because most of them are self-published and undergo little to no editorial oversight that would satisfy Wikipedia's requirements. There are some exceptions, but by large most aren't usable. Usually Wikipedia likes to use news outlets like CinemaBlend, Variety, and the like to show notability. Horror websites like Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting are considered usable as RS as well. Interviews can be sort of iffy since some will consider them to be a self-published source (since it's an interview), but that can differ depending on the editor.

I also need to give you a word of caution about uploading images. Publicity shots are usually not permitted on Wikipedia because they're copyrighted, usually by the actor, their agency, or the film company. Sometimes, rarely, you can justify adding a copyrighted image if you can show that there's a good enough need for it, but by large the general consensus is that biography articles do not require these to be informative. (It's not something I agree with, but this appears to be something motivated largely by legal concerns.) Movie posters can be added, but only for the info boxes in film articles. It's a pretty complicated web of rules for uploading images, which is why I almost always only upload images of movie posters or book covers and even then, only if I'm writing an article about that film or book.

In any case, I hope that none of this deters you from editing. I know that it can be disheartening to see that your article is up for deletion, but it can happen and the best thing to do is to just keep your chin up. I know that there are a lot of horror-related articles that need work (finding sources, writing plot synopses, etc) or need to be created, so there's definitely good things that need the help of a horror aficionado! •Thank you so much for the helpful advice I appreciate it! But I have a question, so that means if a page is a page that is about a person and they don't already have a photo of that person and I wanted to add one, I couldn't upload a photo of that person to the info box on that page? Or could I and it won't be deleted or would it be deleted? I'm sorry I'm just a little confused about the photo process.

Thank you, ☺ BlueFlame101 (talk) 18:08, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
