Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth each star in several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in the most films in the franchise.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a film franchise and shared fictional universe that is the setting of superhero films produced by Marvel Studios, based on characters that appear in Marvel Comics publications. "Phase One" of the franchise featured five films based around individual superheroes, leading up to a crossover in the 2012 film The Avengers. The franchise's "Phase Two" will again feature a number of films based on individual properties, culminating in an Avengers sequel, planned for release in 2015.

As the franchise is composed of films adapted from a variety of Marvel Comics properties, there are multiple lead actors. Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Tony Stark / Iron Man in the films Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), and Iron Man 3 (2013). Chris Hemsworth portrays Thor in both Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013), and Chris Evans portrays Steve Rogers / Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). All three actors star in The Avengers. Chris Pratt is set to portray the lead character, Peter Quill / Star-Lord, in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).[1]

Multiple roles have been recast during the franchise's run. Terrence Howard, who portrayed James Rhodes in Iron Man, was replaced by Don Cheadle, who plays the character in Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3. Edward Norton, who portrayed the lead role of Bruce Banner / Hulk in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk, did not reprise the role in The Avengers, with the studio citing creative differences.[2] Mark Ruffalo was cast in his place.[3] Joshua Dallas portrayed Fandarl in Thor, he was planning to return in Thor: The Dark World but left due of his commitment to Once Upon a Time created scheduling conflicts.[4]The role was recast by Zachary Levi who was meath to played Fandral in the first film.[5]

Samuel L. Jackson had cameo and supporting appearances as Nick Fury in several of the early films in the franchise, before costarring in The Avengers. Other cast members who recurred across multiple films and series within the franchise include Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow. Clark Gregg, who portrayed Phil Coulson in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers, also appeared as the character in two Marvel One-Shots short films, and will star in the television series S.H.I.E.L.D., both of which are connected to the film franchise.

The films feature large, sometimes ensemble, casts of actors and actresses, with several actors portraying key roles in only a film or two, including Hayley Atwell, Jeff Bridges, Anthony Hopkins, William Hurt, Tommy Lee Jones, Natalie Portman, Jeremy Renner, Sam Rockwell, Tim Roth, Mickey Rourke, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Liv Tyler, and Hugo Weaving, among others.

The list below is sorted by film and the character's surname, as some characters have been portrayed by multiple actors.
