"Chapter 4: The Gathering Storm" is the fourth episode of the American television series The Book of Boba Fett, following Boba Fett and Fennec Shand attempting to gain control of Jabba the Hutt's crime empire after his death in Return of the Jedi (1983). The episode is set in the Star Wars universe, sharing continuity with The Mandalorian and other spin-offs such as Ahsoka. It was written by Jon Favreau and directed by Kevin Tancharoen.

Temuera Morrison reprises his role as Fett from the second season of The Mandalorian, with Ming-Na Wen joining him as Fennec Shand. Matt Berry, Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner, and Jennifer Beals also star. Filming began in November 2020 and concluded in June 2021. "Chapter 4: The Gathering Storm" was released on Disney+ on January 19, 2022 to generally positive reviews.

Plot

In a flashback, Boba Fett plans to break into Jabba the Hutt's palace to take his ship back. While he is contemplating a plan he discovers Fennec Shand dying from a gut wound.[a] He successfully manages to get her healed, and recruits her to help him break into Hutt's palace, where she reveals that Bib Fortuna has taken over. They manage to take back Fett's ship. Fett releases Shand from his service, but she still chooses to continue working with him. Later, Fett shoots down the biker gang who killed the Tuskens and attempts to retrieve his armor from the Sarlacc pit, but is unsuccessful. In the present, Fett hires Krrsantan after he gets into a bar fight. He requests that Hutt's subordinates stay neutral in his war with the Pykes Syndicate, which they agree to. Shand suggests to Fett that they find hired muscle for the upcoming war.

Production

Development

The episode was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, making this his first collaboration in a Star Wars project.[1] It was written by the series showrunner Jon Favreau.[2]

Casting

Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen reprise their roles from The Mandalorian as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, respectively.[3][4][5] Matt Berry and Jennifer Beals return as their recurring characters 8D8 and Garsa Fwip.[6][7] Carey Jones plays Black Krrsantan, a Wookie bounty hunter, who previously appeared in the Marvel Comics series, Star Wars: Darth Vader and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra.[8] Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner and Will Kirby make guest appearances as a mod artist in Mos Eisley and Karales, respectively.[9][10]

Music

Joseph Shirley composed the musical score for the episode, while Ludwig Göransson composed the main theme of the series. The featured tracks were released on January 21, 2022, in the first volume of the season one soundtrack.[11]

Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes the episode has an approval rating of 90% based on reviews from 20 critics, with an average rating of 7.20/10. The website's critics consensus states, "'The Gathering Storm' seemingly puts Boba Fett's much-belabored past behind him, finally getting the bounty hunter out of the bacta tank while giving an overdue spotlight to co-star Ming-Na Wen".[12]
