"Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine" is the second episode of the American streaming television series The Book of Boba Fett, following Boba Fett and Fennec Shand attempting to gain control of Jabba the Hutt's crime empire after his death in Return of the Jedi (1983). The episode is set in the Star Wars universe, sharing continuity with The Mandalorian and other spin-offs such as Ahsoka. It was written by Jon Favreau and directed by Steph Green.
Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen reprise their roles as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand from the second season of The Mandalorian. Matt Berry, David Pasquesi, and Jennifer Beals also star. Filming began in November 2020 and concluded in June 2021. "Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine" was released on Disney+ on January 5, 2022 to positive reviews.
Plot
In a flashback, an armored hovertrain approaches the Tusken Raiders' camp, taking out several Tuskens before riding away into the desert. Troubled by their plight, Boba Fett travels to Tosche Station where he is attacked by Nikto miners at the cantina. After defeating them, he takes their speeder bikes to the Tuskens' camp, and begins to teach them how to ride and use the bikes in a plan to rob the hovertrain. After fighting several sentries they reach the train engine and Fett manages to stop the train by using his gaderffii stick to disable the ship's engines. The Tuskens loot the train of weapons and supplies, and take the surviving Pykes captive. Fett confronts the leader of the Pykes and tells him that since the Tuskens claim the Dune Sea as ancestral ground, a toll must now be paid for passage, and lets them return to the Pyke Syndicate.
Later, the Tusken chief gives Fett a lizard in a basket, which climbs into his nostrils, causing him to experience visions including him climbing out of the Sarlacc[a] and watching his father leave Kamino on the Slave I as a child.[b] Fett returns to the Tusken camp the following day, and presents a branch from his night journey to the Tuskens. They lead Fett to a tent, where they clothe him in Tusken robes, and help him forge the branch into a new gaderffii stick. He parties that night with the other Tuskens, becoming one of their own.
In the present day, Fennec Shand takes the captured assassin into Fett's palace, where he holds him in court, demanding to know who sent him. After arguing, Shand activates the trapdoor to the Rancor's den causing the assassin to panic and reveals he was sent by the mayor of Mos Espa. Shand reveals the pit is empty, and they take the assassin to visit the Ithorian mayor, Mok Shaiz, but he is shot by one of the mayor's guards. The mayor then thanks Fett for turning him in, confirming he didn't send the assassin or have intentions of killing him, suggesting Boba to visit Garsa Fwip. Arriving at Garsa's Sanctuary, Garsa explains that "the Twins" have laid claim to their late cousin Jabba the Hutt's bequest, while the rocession carries the two Hutts. Fett confronts the Hutts, demanding that they are in his territory, stating that he is the Daimyo of Mos Espa. An armed black Wookiee known as Black Krrsantan approaches, but Fett, instead of being intimidated, warns him that he will kill him if it's necessary. Shand tells Fett that they will have to get permission to kill the Hutts, while Fett accepts that this is not over yet.

Development
The episode was directed by Steph Green, in her first time collaborating for a Star Wars project.[1][2] It was written by the series showrunner Jon Favreau.[3]
Casting
Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen reprise their roles from The Mandalorian as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, respectively.[4][5][6] Jennifer Beals and Matt Berry return as their recurring characters Madam Garsa Fwip and the droid 8D8. Robert Rodriguez voices Mok Shaiz and David Pasquesi plays his majordomo from the previous episode. Carey Jones plays Black Krrsantan, a Wookie bounty hunter, who previously appeared in the Marvel Comics series, Star Wars: Darth Vader and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra.[7]
Music
Joseph Shirley composed the musical score for the episode, while Ludwig Göransson composed the main theme of the series. The featured tracks were released on January 21, 2022, in the first volume of the season one soundtrack.[8]
Reception
On Rotten Tomatoes the episode has an approval rating of 90% based on reviews from 21 critics, with an average rating of 7.50/10. The website's critics consensus states, ""The Tribes of Tatooine" advances the Book of Boba Fett saga with an engrossing blend of story and smartly staged action".[9]
