Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the third studio album by the Smashing Pumpkins. The Smashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock band. Virgin Records released the album on October 24, 1995 in the United Kingdom. Virgin released it one day later in the United States. Billy Corgan produced the album with Mark Ellis and Alan Moulder. The album has 28 songs in it. It has many different types of music, such as heavy metal, alternative rock, and grunge.[1]
The album was number one on the Billboard 200 music chart.[2] In one week, over 240,000 copies of the album were sold.[3] One of the most popular songs from the album was "Bullet with Butterfly Wings". It was the first single from the album. The album had four other singles: "1979", "Zero", "Tonight, Tonight", and "Thirty-Three". The RIAA gave the album a diamond certification.[4] The album was nominated for seven Grammy Awards.[5]
The band recorded many songs when they were making the album. They did not put all of these songs onto the album. They used many songs that they made for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness on other albums.[6][7] Many music critics liked the album, and said that it was one of the band's best albums.[8][9][10]
