Mozhaysk[4] (Roushie: Можайск) is a toun an the admeenistrative centre o Mozhaysky Destrict o Moscow Oblast, Roushie, locatit 110 kilometer (68 mi) tae the wast frae the Roushie caipital, on the historic road leadin tae Smolensk an then tae Poland. Population: 31,363 (2010 Census);[1] 31,459 (2002 Census);[5] 30,735 (1989 Census).[6]
The toun wis first mentioned in 1231 as an appanage o Chernigov; it wis namit efter the river Mozhai or Mozhaya, whose name is o Easter oreegin (cf. Lithuanie mažoja 'small').[7] Later it wis an important stranghauld o the Smolensk dynasty, ane time awned bi Feodor the Black. The Muscovites seized it in 1303, but in the course o the follaein century haed serious troubles defendin it against Algirdas o Lithuanie. The principality wis uisually held bi a younger brither o the ruling Grand Duke o Moscow, till the practice wis droppit in 1493. In 1562, the Treaty o Mozhaysk wis signed thare. Mozhaysk continued tae defend the Wastren approaches tae Moscow durin Napoleon's invasion o Roushie an Warld War II (durin which it wis captured bi the Germans on 16 October 1941). The great Battle o Borodino teuk place 12 kilometer (7.5 mi) frae the ceety. Toun status wis grantit tae it in 1708.
The first stane cathedral wis biggit in the kremlin in the early 14t century; in 1849, it wis demolisht stane bi stane an then reconstructit exactly as it uised tae be. A lairger bluid-red cathedral in the Gothic Revival style wis completit in 1814. The kirk o St. Joachim an Anna preserves some pairts frae the early 15t century. Anither important laundmerk is the Luzhetsky monastery, foondit in 1408 bi Saunt Ferapont an rebuilt in brick in the 16t century. The monastery cathedral, erectit during the reign o Basil III, wis umwhile kent for its frescoes, ascribit tae Dionisy's circle.
The fact that Mozhaysk is ayont the 101st km zone ootside o Moscow an wis frequently the last major stap on the wey tae the caipital, led tae the "push ayont Mozhay" expression (загнать за Можай, zagnat' za Mozhay), which literally means "push (fowk, enemy) awa (frae Moscow) further than Mozhaysk."[8]
