James Hogg (Ettrick, 1770 – Ibidem 21 November 1835) wis a Scottish bard an novelist wha skreevit in baith the Scots an the Inglis leids.[1] As a loon he warkit as a shepherd an fairmhaan, an wis maistly self-educatit throu readin.[2] He wis a freen o mony o the great skreevners o his day, includin Sir Walter Scott, o wha he later skreevit an unauthorisit biographie.[3] He became widely kent as the "Ettrick Shepherd", a nickname unner whit some o his warks war publisht, an the character name he wis gied in the widely read series Noctes Ambrosianae, publisht in Blackwood's Magazine.[4] He is best kent the day for his novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. His ither warks include the lang poem The Queen's Wake (1813), his collection o sangs Jacobite Reliques (1819), an his twa novels The Three Perils of Man (1822), an The Three Perils of Woman (1823).
