La Corrente sud-atlantica è in continuità con il margine settentrionale della Corrente circumpolare antartica. La navigazione nelle acque della Corrente sud-atlantica è in generale più facile e più sicura di quella nelle acque della Corrente circumpolare antartica, anche se più lenta.
