Dia juga turut tampil dalam beberapa film seperti Training Day, Spider-Man, Scary Movie 3, Lackawanna Blues, Idlewild, For Colored Girls, dan The Paperboy. Gray terutama terkenal dengan singel hit "I Try", dari debut album multi-platinum bertitel On How Life Is.
Dirilis pada musim panas 1999, On How Life Is menjadi sukses besar di seluruh dunia. Meskipun single pertamanya "Do Something" tidak terlalu sukses, rilis single keduanya "I Try" membuat album ini sukses. "I Try" (yang awalnya ditampilkan dalam Love Jones dan film oleh Jennifer Aniston berjudul Picture Perfect pada 1997) adalah salah satu singel terbesar tahun 1999, dan singel berikutnya "Still" dan "Why Did You Call Me" memastikan album menjadi triple platinum di AS dan quadruple platinum di Inggris.[9]
Gray menikah dengan Tracy Hinds, seorang broker hipotek, selama sekitar empat tahun, tetapi mereka bercerai ketika kariernya menanjak. Mereka memiliki tiga anak, Aanisah, Mel, dan Happy. Dia membuka Akademi Musik Macy Gray pada 2005.[10]
