Winx Club is a 2004 Italian animated television series, created by Iginio Straffi and produced by Rainbow S.p.A.. The series is aimed toward children between the ages of five and twelve[1] and has spawned an international franchise of toys, books, clothing, DVDs, as well as a CGI feature film.

Production and development

This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it.

Iginio Straffi first wished to create a cartoon for girls in 2000, when children's programming was "dominated" by boy-oriented shows. He wished to create a show for girls like Sailor Moon, My Little Pony or the Care Bears.[2]

Plot

Season 1

An ordinary girl from Planet Earth, Bloom lives a perfectly normal life in the city of Gardenia until she meets Stella, a princess from the planet Solaria, who is in trouble. Coming to Stella's aid, Bloom discovers her magical powers. Stella persuades Bloom to join Alfea, the best fairy school in all the realms. In Alfea, Bloom forms the Winx Club, whose members are her four friends and roommates: Stella, Musa, Tecna, and Flora. Later in the series they encounter and befriend the Specialists: Brandon, Riven, Timmy, and Sky. The Specialists are (called Heroes in the 4Kids version) will also become their love interests. They will also encounter their enemies, a trio of witches named the Trix: Icy, Darcy, and Stormy. They are witches from Cloudtower, a witch school roughly equivalent to Alfea, and are in search of the power of the Dragon's Flame (called Dragon Fire in the 4Kids version) which is supposedly in Stella's magic ring. Their ruthless pursuit of the ring leads to many encounters and battles with the Winx Club. Bloom also begins to learn the secrets of her planet, parents, and powers.

Season 2

After their summer vacation, the Winx Club returns to Alfea to begin their second year. They meet a new fairy, Layla, who asks for their help in rescuing her pixie friends held hostage by Lord Darkar. Lord Darkar wants to find out where the Pixies' Village is in order to steal the four pieces of the Codex (one each in Pixie Village, Redfountain, Cloudtower, and Alfea) which open the portal to the Realm of Realix, where the Ultimate Power can be found. The Trix also meet Lord Darkar and served him. They seemed to have developed an obsess feeling for him, wanting to please him as Icy stated she wanted to be his main witch. In the mean time, the Winx Club learned how to get their Charmix. Lord Darkar is actually the "Shadow Phoenix" who wants to take control of the magical realm. In the meantime there is a new teacher who after Alfea lessons turns Bloom into Dark Bloom and sends Bloom to Lord Darkar. During Episode 24, he was able to turn Bloom into his servant, thus making her open the realm of Realix. But later on in the show Sky expresses his true fealings to Bloom then she uses her healing powers to heal everyone. After the battle, Bloom and the others go back to Alfea and celebrate. Layla also joined the Winx Club. Stella has a big fashion deal going on.

Season 3

Previously banished to the Omega Dimension, the Trix are able to escape with Valtor,[nb 1] a sorcerer partially responsible for the destruction of Bloom's home realm, Domino.[nb 2] They choose to cooperate and plan to invade several areas in the realm of Magix and seek vengeance on those who imprisoned them, by stealing the magic treasures and power sources of each realm. The Winx Club begins its third year in Alfea and the girls learn about their unique Enchantix transformations, acquired by showing courage and altruism.

Season 4

The fourth season made its debut in Italy on April 15, 2009[3]. The Winx come to Earth to find the last fairy and to make humans believe in magic so that they can earn their Believix. The Believix is the new transformation in season 4, where their wings are more powerful, and are more useful. They have three additional wings as well, Speedix (speed enhancement), Zoomix (teletransportation) and Tracix (visual aids). When a fairy earns her Believix, she gains the ability to make someone believe in magic. For the Winx group, it didn't work in the beginning, but it did make people overcome their weaknesses. The villans in this season are the "Wizards of the Black Circle" (The Fairy Hunters). They stole the magic from Earth, making the denizens disrespect it. The Wizards need Roxy, the last fairy on Earth, to gain full power. But, from sometime in the season onwards, their target switches to the White Circle, a magical ring in which the fairies from Earth were trapped. Roxy at first didn't believe in fairies until the Winx Club came and helped her believe and gain her Believix as well.

The Winx Club and Pixies. Top row, from left to right: Amore, Stella, Tecna, Digit. Second row, from left to right: Lockette, Bloom, Flora, Chatta. Bottom row, from left to right: Piff, Layla, Musa, Tune.

Bloom: She discovered her dormant magical powers after coming to the aid of another fairy, Stella. Strong and caring, she is always available to help her friends. Shortly after arriving at Alfea, she discovers that her powers of fire come from the ancient Dragon's Flame. She is the princess and survivor of the planet Domino,[nb 2] her birthplace. She owns a blueish bunny named Kiko. Her pixie is Lockette, the pixie of mazes and portals. Her magical pet is Belle, a green and white sheep.

Stella: She is a talkative and "girly girl" student who often gets average or low grades, but always pulls through with help from her friends. She tends to be spontaneous and dislikes extensive planning, but she is able to recognize when her help is needed. Stella is also infamous amongst the Alfea houses for blowing up a laboratory and being kept back a grade; thus, she is a year older than all the other Winx Club fairies. She has the power of the sun and the moon because her mother represents the moon and her father represents the sun. She is the princess of the planet Solaria , her birthplace. Her pixie is Amore, the pixie of love. Her magical pet is Ginger, a white poodle.

Flora: Flora is a very kind-hearted and sensitive girl with a passion for nature and life. Happy and introverted, she is always a sweet, loyal friend and doesn't believe in hurting others or the environment. She is extremely fond of plants and nature and her room consequently resembles a greenhouse. She has the power of nature, which allows her to use plants in her attacks and natural predators to exterminate pests. She comes from the planet Linphea. Her pixie is Chatta, the pixie of gossip. In Season 3, it is revealed that Flora has a younger sister named Miele (Rose in the 4kids dub). Her magical pet is Coco, a pink cat.

Musa: Musa loves all forms of music. Although she tries to put up a tough front to isolate herself and is often pessimistic, she is a loyal and caring friend. Musa has the best grades of the entire Winx Club (including Tecna). She is a tomboy (similar to Layla). She is pale and has an Asian in appearance, with blue-black pigtails and blue eyes. She has the power of music, and she gets her energy from all kinds of music. She comes from the planet Melody so she grew with music all around her. Her first magic that she used was her flute. Her mother was a great singer and her father a great pianist. Her father would make all kinds of musical instruments. Musa's mother died when Musa was young and she lived with her father. Her pixie is Tune, the pixie of manners, who often gets on Musa's nerves since they are almost the exact opposite of each other in terms of personalities. Her magical pet is Pepe, a brown bear.

Tecna: Tecna is always logical and rational, and initially had trouble expressing her emotions. She speaks in a technical and a matter-of-fact manner. She is extremely intelligent and strong in technology and mathematics and enjoys playing video games and dismantling stuff. She can act cold and rational at times, but always tries to do the right thing. She has the power of technology and can control everything provided by technology. She comes from the planet Zenith. Her pixie is Digit, the pixie of technology. Her magical pet is Chicko, a yellow duck.

Layla (Aisha in Italy): Layla is the Princess of Andros (renamed "Tides" in the 4Kids dub). She has a restless, rebellious, and wild nature. Layla is a good athlete, fighter, dancer, and wind-raider rider. She is also a feminist and thus opposes Riven, a chauvinist. She is also somewhat of a tomboy (similar to Musa). She has the power of fluids and is able to manipulate a pink fluid called "Morphix" to take on any form she chooses. She joins the Winx Club in season two and brings her pixie friends along with her. Her pixie is Piff, the pixie of sweet dreams, who quite frequently helps her with her troubling nightmares. Her magical pet is Milly, a white rabbit.

Roxy: Roxy has power over animals. Roxy is the last terrestrial fairy, whom the Wizards of the Black Circle pursue in order to imprison. The Winx fairies' newest mission is to protect Roxy from the evil Wizards of the Black Circle, who are after her. Roxy has waist-length, hot pink hair with yellow tips, and eyes of arbitrarily interchanging violet and amber color. She also lives in Gardenia, just like Bloom, and is described as out-going. The Winx girls noticed her in the coolest bar in town-and got to befriend with her later in the series-where her father and herself work: The Frutti Music Bar. As the fairy of animals, she owns a pet dog, Artù, whom she loves very much and tends with care. Her Fairy outfit theme color was revealed to be dark green, in subtle contrast with Layla's aquamarine tone.

The Trix

The Trix are an evil trio of teenage witch sisters who attended the Cloudtower School for Witches (only in the first season, after which they got expelled), a school which used to rival Alfea. They are the enemies of the Winx Club. In the fourth season, as of episode 13, the Trix do not appear yet.

The Specialists

The Specialists are a group of students who attend an all-boys school near Alfea, the Redfountain School For Specialists. The following six Specialists have become the boyfriends of the Winx girls.

Setting

This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it.

Gardenia

Gardenia is a major city on earth where Bloom lived most of her life. After discovering that she was fairy, she moved into the dormitories of Alfea and would occasionally return to visit her parents or to introduce her friends to the unique culture. In the fourth season, Gardenia becomes the main setting as the Winx club pursues and protects Roxy, the last fairy on Earth.

The Realm of Magix

The Realm of Magix is an alternate universe where most of the series unfolds. It is also the name of a city in that universe. It is an enchanted and highly technologically-advanced universe of hospitable planets populated by fairies, witches, heroes, and monsters.

Alfea

The Alfea School for Fairies is a boarding school for fairies in training. All of the Winx girls met and reside here and have a close relationship with its headmistress, Ms. Faragonda. At Alfea, fairies learn to fight evil, help their planets, or, in many cases, become queens of their planets.

Cloudtower

Cloudtower[nb 3] is a boarding school for witches in training, and for most of Season 1, it was the residence for the Trix witches. At Cloudtower, the witches learn about witchcraft. In later episodes of season 1, the Trix took over Cloudtower and caused a disaster after they stole the Dragon's Flame from Bloom. Ms. Griffin is their headmistress. It is revealed in seasons 2 that she is friends with Ms. Faragonda, and in season 3, she, Saladin and Faragonda are in the Company of Light. It was also revealed that she had a past with Valtor.[nb 1]

Redfountain

Redfountain[nb 4] is a boarding school for the specialists, one magical forest away from Alfea. It teaches fighting and the use of technology. In the Redfountain boys are taught how to go on dangerous missions and to fight for their respective planets. Redfountain and Alfea have a close relationship, and Miss Faragonda and Saladin have a long history that involves Bloom's past.

This was the first Winx Club magazine created. In Italy, as of issue 60, each magazine contains a letter from one or more of the girls, a section called "Winx Time", hosted by Bloom, a fun quiz or test, a section entitled "Dance... Sport... and Fun!", "written" by Layla/Aisha, Musa's section, which is entitled "Magic Music", an interview with a celebrity, a section called 'A Tutto... The magazine also often contains previews of Winx Club products, events, web sites, and tv characters.

Pixie Magazine

A spinoff of the original magazine, centered around the pixies. The magazine usually contains one full-length comic and two or three short comics. It also contains sections centered around each of the Pixie's passions, and also contains a section for letters written to the magazine.

Theatrical Films

Dancers portraying the Winx Club attend the Rome Film Fest in Italy.

A CGI feature film, Winx Club - Il Segreto Del Regno Perduto (The Secret Of The Lost Kingdom), was announced in late 2006, and released in Italy on 30 November 2007. It was released on 22 February 2008 in Turkey, on 16 April 2008 in the Netherlands, and on 20 November 2008 in Singapore (as of current writing, its only market outside of Europe and also the only market to see it in English). The plot of the film revolves around Bloom's origins, and takes place after the events of the third season.[5] The official website of the movie covers several markets, with release dates and other information.

At the Licensing Expo 2008 in New York, RAI announced the production of a second movie, slated to premiere in 2010[6].

Theatre

In September 2005, the "Winx Power" musical show began in Italy.[7][8] After a successful tour in Italy, it also expanded to Belgium and the Netherlands, before expanding to Portugal in 2009. November 2008 also saw the launch of "Winx On Ice", an ice show starring Carolina Kostner.[9]

Video Games

Winx Club games have been released for the PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and PC. All Winx Club games are published by Konami.

There are currently 7 Winx Club games

Merchandise

In Europe, Italian candy manufacturer Ferrero began to distribute plastic Winx figurines as prizes inside their Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs. Also, a monthly Winx comic book has been published, although its storylines have generally not been related to that of the animated series.

In the United States, 4Kids Entertainment holds the licensing rights to the series and has licensed the Winx Club name and image to an assortment of children's apparel and books. Toys such as dolls made by Mattel and a card game created with Upper Deck Entertainment are available in major stores such Wal-Mart, UK, India and Toys R Us.

In Singapore, bags, clothing and similar items are available. The dolls are the "third most popular dolls in the world" and merchandise sales are over 1 billion euros per year as of 2007.[10]

DVD Collection

In North America, the entire first season of the Winx Club, first released on 12 July 2005, was available as a five-disc collection until 2008. The first DVD of Season Two, "Layla and the Pixies", was released in 2007, and the second volume, "Battle for the Codex", came out in September 2007, and both are still available. The first DVD of Season Three, "The Princess Ball", was released on 27 January 2009[11], and the other half, Fire & Flame, will be released on 26 January 2010 [12].
