This project has now been created at WP:RODENT. Ucucha 14:12, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Description[edit]

A WikiProject whose scope would include the several hundreds of species in the order Rodentia. Would absorb the defunct WP:WikiProject Squirrels, being a child of WP:MAMMAL. Targeted articles for immediate improvement would be Brown Rat and Eastern Gray Squirrel (the latter hosting a featured picture). -ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 20:51, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  2. My ability to contribute has lessened of late, but rodents have always been my primary focus on wikipedia. --Aranae (talk) 00:27, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  3. I don't have any special interest in rodents, but I have worked on several related articles and would love to be a part of this project and help out in any way I can. -- əʌləʍʇ əuo-ʎʇuəʍʇ ssnɔsıp 01:13, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  4. I'd be in. --6th Happiness (talk) 02:10, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  5. This would be useful for keeping some of the regional lists of mammals I've worked on up to date. Is there a similar project for bats? WolfmanSF (talk) 03:12, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Not sure I would join myself, but I think it's a fine idea. Beeblebrox (talk) 03:30, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Ucucha 11:25, 24 June 2009 (UTC) Yes, and I would be interested to join and contribute if I have the time.[reply]
  8. I'm not a mammal guy, but the idea behind this proposal sounds good. Abyssal (talk) 18:06, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  9. It sounds like a good idea, and I'll certainly help contribute. 75.180.44.9 (talk) 01:15, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  10. I would be happy to contribute to anything involving caviomorph/hystricomorph rodents (degus, chinchillas, guineapigs, porcupines). Degutopia (talk) 14:09, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

As half of all mammal species yet often considered less charismatic, rodents require a certain measure of effort that I'm not sure is dealt with in the context of WP:Mammals. I suspect that most users there are generally not paying particular attention to the rodents. Just maintaining the article pages in light of taxonomic revision and new species is an effort. A centralized location for the core of users interested in the lesser fpcused-on half of mammals could really aid in improving the quality of these articles. --Aranae (talk) 00:34, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i was hoping to see your support! By WP:MAM's own admission, they are not a good location for centralized discussion, and given the roles that rodents have played throughout history it is a shame that we have so few high-quality articles. --ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 00:46, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. A fraction of rodent species are covered in Wikipedia:WikiProject Mammals/Pocket pets work group (some of the species listed on that page I haven't heard of being kept as pets though) but I haven't seen any activity there for a while. Some of the pet rodent articles are also frustratingly lacking in reliable sources, and read too much like 'how-to' instructions. I'd like to see that sorted out. --6th Happiness (talk) 02:09, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone and created the WP:RODENT page - something about rodent in all caps is a little unsettling. While nowhere near complete with talk-page banners, assessments, and all that jazz, I think it has a good start with it's to-do list, and maybe we can come up with some goals (easy ones like bringing a high-priority start-class up to a B, or picking a GA even). This proposal has met the minimum of 5 participants in only a couple days (although I plastered the whole town with fliers), so I have a good feeling we can at least start with a good foundation :) Anyone wishing to leave a comment at the project's talk page, just take down the ((under construction)) banner. i'm curious to see what kind of momentum we can get going. i'll go ahead and be slowly bringing all the bells and whistles online (i'd hate to put in a lot of work on just the project side only to watch it fizzle), but of course i welcome help from anyone else who likes doing that sort of thing (i've already been looking into merely expanding functionality on the ((mammal)) template to facilitate an essential absorbtion of many of their articles). Cheers! --ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 19:11, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
