Suspected sockpuppets
  1. Johnwest1999 indef blocked for introducing space-flight-related hoaxes in this AN/I case.
  2. Evidence that 76.188.18.166 is a sockpuppet of Johnwest1999 can be seen in the identical hoaxes advocated by both users at My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (season 4) - See 76.188.18.166's first salvo, repetition by Johnwest1999, and repetition by 76.188.18.166 again. Further evidence can be found here (where both NeilN and JamesBWatson blocked this user for sockpuppetry).
  3. Evidence that 76.188.18.166 is the same person as Johnwest19992nd can be found at Cartoon Network (UK & Ireland) - Compare these and this edit by 76.188.18.166 with this edit by Johnwest19992nd.
  4. Note also the similarities between the name "Johnwest1999" and "Johnwest19992nd".

Suspected sockpuppets

This first came to my attention when the IP began editwarring over whether Global Television Network, in its paragraph about the impact of the Anik satellite decision on the original "NTV" network proposal of 1968, required an extended digression into the entire subsequent ownership history of Canada's entire broadcast satellite infrastructure all the way up to the present day [1] — following which they made a vaguely threatening post to my talk page arbitrarily dictating that the information was "here to stay" whether I liked it or not. In reviewing the IP's prior edit history, I noted the following evidence to suggest a link:

  1. 174 has directly acknowledged in one edit summary that they are a former logged-in user evading a past block: [2]
  2. 174 is a frequent editor of Tacoloco's sandbox page, but has never touched anybody else's. [3] [Update: the current content of that page, added by IP number 65.182.125.23, includes "Johnny West" among the names of the creators of that topic. So for the sake of completionism, I'm adding 65 to the request although I can't otherwise connect their edit history to this situation.]
  3. Tacoloco and 174 have both since gotten directly involved in ongoing editwarring at H-I, N-I and N-II over unsourced claims that McDonnell Douglas was their designer; 76.188.18.166, the IP number previously blocked as a sock of JohnWest in the first go-around, was the editor who originally inserted that claim into the articles, 174 reverted it back into the articles two or three times in May, and Tacoloco was the most recent restorer. The link to 76 through this content is where I was able to finally establish the link to Johnwest.
  4. 174 has previously attempted to blank large portions of Super RTL [4] and to editwar over it when that was reverted; Tacoloco's first-ever edit was a malformed and bad faith attempt to have Super RTL's article deleted outright by listing it at AFD but not actually creating the nomination page for it to be discussed. [5] (Which weirdly resembles one of the last things JohnWest did before the block: listing himself for an RFA nomination but not actually creating a discussion page or nomination statement.) 76 was previously involved in editing some of the same content that Tacoloco and 174 were trying to blank — JohnWest has also edited that page in the past, albeit at a time when none of the disputed content was there yet to be editwarred over.
  5. From what I can tell by comparing JohnWest's logged-in edit history to 76's, he seemed to follow a pattern of keeping his powder dry when logged in by using minimal edit summaries and not getting too aggressive on talk pages, but then logging out and using IPs like 76 to editwar and lash out with attacks and idle ban threats at anybody who disagreed with his content — and that's the very same pattern seen here between Tacoloco and 174.
  6. Although I'm not finding too many other specific pages where they all crossed paths directly besides the ones I've already noted, there are broad themes of interest discernible across all of the users' edit histories: animated television series and the channels that air them, broadcast satellites and the rockets that launched them into orbit.
  7. The editing issue that got me on this trail in the first place, regarding whether the extended ownership history of Anik/Telesat was necessary added context in an article on the Global Television Network, closely resembles an edit JohnWest made in April 2015 to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, delving into the contextually irrelevant extended ownership history of two of the channels that merely happen to air that show. [6]

I did run a reverse IP lookup on both 174 and 76, and they do both resolve to the same ISP. I ran one on 65 as well, but it just came up blank on several different lookup sites. Bearcat (talk) 21:30, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update. Tacoloco essentially admitted that my suspicion was correct by trying to blank this discussion, editing the archive page to demand his old account back, and then running to Jimbo Wales' talk page to demand that he personally restore Johnwest's original account and dissolve the entire anti-vandalism infrastructure. Tacoloco has already been blocked accordingly, although the IP numbers are still outstanding requests. Bearcat (talk) 14:08, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No action is needed here, I'm simply filing this for archiving purposes in case this user data is needed in future sockchecks. The user began by restoring, in the article about Global Television Network, an extended ownership history of Canada's entire telecommunications satellite infrastructure all the way up to the present day — content which was originally added by other socks of Johnwest1999, and has been removed each time as not particularly relevant to the history of the Global Television Network. After the IP editwarred over its removal a couple of times, I sprotted the article — following which the newly registered Jw99clevelandreturns posted to my talk page, threatening to hack my account if I didn't let them restore that content, following which they really did attempt to hack me. (I've got a very solid, complex password, however, so I'm in no danger.)
Meanwhile, Westj1211 has also been separately blocked for editwarring at Super RTL, another article where Johnwest1999 has a history of editwarring.
Both usernames have already been blocked, and there's little doubt about the linkages to Johnwest1999, so no further action is necessary at this time — I just wanted the usernames placed on the record as part of this user's SPI history, so that if yet another sockpuppet emerges in the future these usernames will be documented for comparison. Bearcat (talk) 21:09, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Also now adding "West,11085", a new username whose only Wikipedia contribution was a post on my talk page threatening to have my administrator privileges revoked once he takes over as the owner of Wikipedia. Since it was very obviously connected to this same dispute, I've already duckblocked the new username — so, again, this update is just for the sake of having the username documented on the record in case it's needed in future sockchecks. Standard behaviour consistent with sockpuppeteer's past actions, including reinsertion of content into Global Television Network that tangentially digressed into an extended ownership history of Canada's entire telecommunications infrastructure long past the limits of Telesat's actual relevance to the network's article, the creation of a total hoax article about an entirely non-existent Canadian television station, and an edit history that otherwise prioritizes telecommunications satellites. There are probably sufficient grounds for a WP:DUCK block, but I'm requesting a full SPI check as past checks on this user have also flushed out sleeper accounts that had not already been identified as suspicious. Very similar behaviour to GroupJWbackup, another sock. Please CU and check sleepers. IceWelder [] 21:53, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not doing anything wrong. I was reverting the edits in 3RR. I promise I'll behave. --Jostwiki (talk) 02:24, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
