User:GRB080 exhibits the same editing characteristics as prior incarnations of AlexLevyOne - the same general areas of interest (film and popular culture - no judaica yet though), the same editing intensity (very high) and the same style of editing (trivial changes made without any assessment of their merit or validity, often leaving the article worse). Some of his past puppets focused on wikifying - or de-wikifying - various terms or names; this puppet has been adding shorthand titles to footnote references. (It wouldn't be so bad if the shorthand references were competent, but they are not - they're usually just one word which is often far more obscure than the URL they replaced, and usually written without regard to ordinary rules of capitalization. It's just more work for someone else to clean up some day.) Egs here: diff; diff; diff.

The archives above supply a good deal of additional background about this user and his puppets.

While this editor has been quiet for a while, he is back in full force with this puppet. Editor exhibits the same prolific style, making meaningless and / or confusing edits to (usually) film and popular culture articles, specializing (as he has most recently) in adding confusing shorthand tags to references. These edits bear all the hallmarks of AlexLevyOne. Meaningless edits (most typically, unhelpful ref abbreviations) coming in intense spurts, without edit summaries, to entertainment sites. Where he makes substantive edits, the English is, at best, labored, e.g. here and La_Maison_Rouge. See the archive for countless other examples of this editor's work.

Elaborating on the foregoing - this is the latest puppet in a lengthy series of puppets by this chronic account abuser. See the archive for the extensive history. This account was created on the heels of the most recent block and is plainly another puppet of the same person. The interests - film and "art" (often French), current newsmakers - are the same as prior puppets. The edits are the same as well, most typically the meaningless adding or removing of wikilinks, the addition or removal of blank lines or spaces in an article, and the haphazard and careless reduction of cited references down to minimal abbreviations. Lately he has also been creating articles about lesser known individuals, and movies that are months - or years - away from production. JohnInDC (talk) 12:12, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This user neatly fits the current AlexLevyOne paradigm - a new user with a username using (I gather) Hebrew characters; meaningless or destructive edits to articles about film and popular culture. A user by the same name has been identified as an ALO sock at Wikipedia:fr and blocked, as shown here. JohnInDC (talk) 17:20, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Hebrew caracters actually read Al (as in "Alex"), so there is no room for doubt (yes, i can read Hebrew, although only a little).--RCS (talk) 18:43, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Probably the initials A.L., for Alex Levy. Deor (talk) 18:55, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Could be, too. His preceding sock however was called "Alexander Levy", in Hebrew caracters ([1]), so maybe it *is* "Al". Doesn't' change anything, though. It is him. --RCS (talk) 19:06, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AlexLevyOne has evidently broadened the scope of his interests to Sinology and other things Chinese. That's the emphasis of this puppet. The edits are characteristically trivial; there are of course the typical edits to film and cinema articles as well. This ID has been blocked at Wikipedia:fr, where the subject matter of the edits are even more characteristic. See fr:Special:Contributions/Leonopteryx. JohnInDC (talk) 12:19, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This swerve toward China was a bit mysterious but the point of departure would appear to be this article - José Frèches - who was a French historical novelist who set his stories in China. I'm fleshing out a new sockpuppet report that was filed here by User:Hégésippe Cormier, not quite to the standard format (see at this diff) and which for that reason may have wound up being overlooked. It follows:

Wastiko, already blocked on French Wikipedia. Hégésippe | ±Θ± 05:21, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hégésippe is knowledgeable about AlexLevyOne / Albion's puppetry at Wikipedia:fr. This editor's few contributions on Wikipedia:en don't definitively establish it as an AlexLevyOne sock but there are certainly common characteristics (cinematic subject matter interest, idiosyncratic edits repeated on many pages - this round was adding national flag icons to biographies; parallel accounts on Wikipedia:en and Wikipedia:fr). Given all that, plus the block at Wikipedia:fr, it looks like a sock. JohnInDC (talk) 11:00, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Synesthésie

Typical interests (cinema, Judaica), typical edits (minor additions or revisions; sometimes meaningless addition or removal of spaces or extra lines), awkward use of English when composing sentences, consistent lack of edit summaries, editor of same name blocked as sockpuppet of Albion at Wikipedia:fr (here). Editing not quite as frenzied as the usual ALO puppet but the shoe fits otherwise. JohnInDC (talk) 19:45, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have added Jake Sully. to the list as usernames from the film, Avatar, have been previously blocked as suspects of AlexLevyOne (User:Neytiri and User:Grace Augustine). Jake Sully has recieved vandalism warnings (for vandalism to the film, Avatar) but has been inactive since the end of January meaning that this may be a sleeper. SuperSonic SPEED (formerly known as ChaosControl1994). 18:00, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose it's worth checking, but ALO's puppets are usually much less overtly disruptive than that. Jake Sully. should really just be subject to a straight-up block. JohnInDC (talk) 18:05, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It might as well be checked as ALO has had socks with usernames that are characters from the film and they have been subject to vandalism. It may possibly be ALO is causing more disruption with Jake Sully. to avoid detection but as of Avatar character names have had history with ALO, I have added this account as it may be a sleeper trying to avoid detection and as of ALO's history with the film and if Jake Sully. has been found innocent, the account can be dealt with at WP:AIV. SuperSonic SPEED (formerly known as ChaosControl1994). 18:12, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have requested Checkuser to see if Jake Sully. is related to AlexLevyOne. SuperSonic SPEED (formerly known as ChaosControl1994). 20:11, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure that Sully isn't ALO. Our friend Alex isn't very proficient in English, whereas Sully seems quite fluent in American vernacular profanity. Deor (talk) 20:14, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible that Sully isn't ALO but it could be a sleeper who is acting different to avoid detection. this edit shows ALO having a mixed vocabulary (with one I'm being put as Im and another as i'm) but both users don't use capitals and ALO admits being an English speaking contributer meaning that he may have become more fluent over time. Besides, Checkuser will show the truth. SuperSonic SPEED (formerly known as ChaosControl1994). 20:19, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we'll see. For now though I agree with Deor, and I'd be very surprised to find that this fellow is an ALO puppet. JohnInDC (talk) 21:23, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Something's very odd here, and I'd like a second checkuser to take a look at Hengzhen. If I'm reading the checkuser data correctly, that account was created using something that shouldn't have the ability to make any logged changes on a wiki. At first glance, though, I'd say the following:
Confirmed as AlexLevyOne, or at least the same person:

This is a well-known serial sockpuppeteer who creates global accounts and uses them to edit on the French and English WPs until each is discovered, at which point he abandons it and creates a new account. The editing interests and patterns of the accounts are familiar to anyone who has been following this saga. Blocking this particular account is a minor matter, since he will just move on to a new one, but discovering whether any additional accounts have been created may be somewhat useful. Deor (talk) 04:46, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A quick look at the archive will illustrate Deor's point. JohnInDC (talk) 10:40, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the extra info. It is not possible for me to check the newest account directly against User:AlexLevyOne due to the IP information having gone stale, but the sock does match the patterns of some of the other confirmed socks from archived cases. Robotpotato shares several traits of AlexLevyOne and spawn - interests in cinema, French Judaica to name two. There is also a notable correspondence in articles edited by this editor an ALO puppets. The account is *un*unsual in that about 15% of the time this editor actually includes edit summaries; and, has existed and been active for several months. Usually he betrays himself more quickly than that. The account is, however, like ALO a generally disruptive one and was recently blocked (12 hours) for violating WP:BLP. This editor displays several of the usual ALO characteristics - an interest in cinema and popular culture; trivial edits (with over-compressed abbreviations of refs within articles, e.g., this change); and the complete lack of edit summaries. There is, as usual, a corresponding account at :fr, making the same sorts of edits (not yet blocked). The differences from prior puppets are slight - this account was dormant for a bit following its creation before it was used, and the volume of edits is not as frenzied as usual. Still it bears all of the other hallmarks. JohnInDC (talk) 14:35, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Classic ALO behavior - trivial edits focusing on pop culture, royalty and - more recently among ALO puppets - Asian and Middle Eastern topics. Also the lack of edit summaries. The surname here - Levy - harkens back to the original puppetmaster account too. He's been editing for a while under this name rather quietly but has gone on a bit of a tear lately. Cutting against puppetry is that the account has existed since 2009 and usually his accounts do not lie dormant that long. But this account is blocked at Wikipedia:fr as a puppet of their Albion and that's, I think, the final nail in this coffin. See here. JohnInDC (talk) 00:43, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The former of the two is an obvious AlexLevyOne sock. Apart from the telling clue of the shared name, this editor makes the same idiosyncratic edits, without edit summaries, to the same sorts of articles (in this case mostly cinema-related). This account bears most of the hallmarks of ALO's socks but the match is not as clean as in the (many) prior cases I've reported, so I will go into a bit more detail here for reviewing admins. On the pro side we have 1) a general overlap of interests, specifically French cinema & minor European royalty; 2) many articles edited in common with ALO puppets, e.g., Charlotte Gainesbourg, Thibault de Montbrial, Alois Brunner; 3) a very great number of edits in a very short period of time 4) from a newly created account; 5) many, many trivial changes to articles (the following is typical: [2]); 6) weird little dustups such as this (see collapsed text). Having written up the "pro" side I've just about convinced myself, but on the "con" or at least "ambiguous" side we have, 1) An account by the same name, editing many of the same articles here, has been blocked at :fr as a sockpuppet, but not of ALO (Albion there), and none of the other listed puppets on that page spring to mind as known ALO puppets; 2) this editor's edits are broadly not as disruptive as ALO's - in fact they're close to invisible in most articles. (I haven't bothered looking through all 500+.) CU should resolve it, or so I'd hope. JohnInDC (talk) 19:27, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Trivial edits to cinema articles, also high profile current events like 9/11. User name is of a real person, another ALO characteristic. No edit summaries, blocked at :fr as puppet. Account may be abandoned now so checking for sleepers or others would be a good idea. JohnInDC (talk) 03:20, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Typical ALO edits to typical ALO pages; blocked at :fr. Asking CU to check for sleepers. JohnInDC (talk) 15:41, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AlexLevyOne’s sock puppets have recently favored editing pages involving people of recent note in the news; French media & cinema personalities; and Judaica. His interests have shifted over time but that’s where he is editing currently. His edits are often trivial, e.g. adding or removing lines or spaces. Here are two from DERPRI -
diff
diff
to compare with two from blocked puppet VFair
diff
diff.
His edis are rarely, if ever, accompanied by an edit summary. AlexLevyOne is the same individual as the user Albion on Wikipedia:fr, and DERPRI has already been blocked at that site as a sock of Albion.
DERPRI has also edited a variety of pages that ALO and his socks seem to favor – these alone suffice to show that DERPRI is an ALO puppet. For instance, DERPRI has edited Thierry Ardisson, which was created by ALO and been edited by ALO puppets Italik and ANGGUN. (I am supplying the user pages rather than the diffs because it’s easy to see sample edits in the page history and less easy to see that these are ALO socks.)
Alain Mamou-Mani, which DERPRI has edited, was created by the ALO sockpuppet User:Elsass and subsequently edited by AlexLevyOne himself as well as a series of other ALO socks, specifically User:VingtSix, User:Mohkalb, User:Z&N and User:Italik.
Seen (artist) is another example. ALO contributors to this page include User:Z&N, User:The Nuke, User:Mister Gaga and User:Albert Gonzalez. There are more but it’s more trouble than it’s worth to list them all.
Note too that DERPRI has edited François Hollande, from which the ALO sock Franck Holland plainly took his name.
This is an open-and-shut case. CU is not necessary to demonstrate that, of course, but as a review of the extensive archive of this puppetmaster shows, ALO often has a lot of sleeper accounts active and it is helpful to find and block them before he uses them. JohnInDC (talk) 15:56, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally. I've filed maybe a hundred of these over the past few years. Once you learn ALO's style he is easy to spot; and I have never been wrong. If going forward I need to be supplying a full-blown explanation, with diffs, for each report, I will probably quit doing them. Given the speed at which he can create accounts, it's too much work. I would also add that while in the early going his edits are - as noted - trivial and innocuous, sooner or later his puppets find themselves in an edit war over something substantial. He is not a banned user because he removes spaces; he is a banned user because he is a disruptive editor. Please let me know what you will be expecting from these reports in the future. Thanks. 1. At least one diff is from the sockmaster (or an account already blocked as a confirmed sockpuppet of the sockmaster), showing the behaviour characteristic of the sockmaster.
  2. At least one diff per suspected sockpuppet, showing the suspected sockpuppet emulating the behaviour of the sockmaster given in the first diff.
  3. In situations where it is not immediately obvious from the diffs what the characteristic behaviour is, a short explanation must be provided. Around one sentence is enough for this.

Account created immediately on the heels of the last block. Confirmed as sock at :fr, here. (Yet to be blocked.) Typical ALO subjects (cinema) and style (fractured English contributions in new articles, see e.g. Ernest Picard-Destelan). Trivial additions, subtractions, see here, here. Not seeking CU because it's so soon after the last one, and behavioral & crosswiki evidence is sufficient. JohnInDC (talk) 19:25, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

RETREZ engages in typical ALO behavior, focusing on French Jewry, cinema, current figures in the news. RETREZ has not edited at :fr yet - and so, is not blocked there - but in case there is any question about identity, RETREZ created the page Léonard Rosenthal here on :en on December 8, which was created on the preceding day at :fr by Squaillefôle, a blocked sock of their Albion. See this page history. (For that reason I am also reporting Squaillefôle here, despite having made only a couple of edits here; and to round out the list am also tossing in Dertzer, who was also blocked at :fr but who is inactive here.) RETREZ has also edited several pages visited by prior socks, including Alois Brunner and François Hollande, to name just two. Requesting CU for sleepers. This new editor bears all the hallmarks of this notorious and persistent puppeteer. Recently created, this account leaped into immediately into extensive editing, first by recreating Marc Gilbert (journalist) under a new name after it had been repeatedly recreated, as Marc Gilbert, by socks of same following deletion per AfD; also reflects identical interests of prior socks in pages such as Alexandre Gilbert (the name of a prior sock, here), History of the Jews in Alsace, Stéphane Bern, Thierry Ardisson and Galerie Chappe (indirectly by reference, here), as well as French media generally. Requesting CU to confirm the obvious quacking here. JohnInDC (talk) 12:27, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adding TRGUY, based on overlap of interests (French cinema and media), History of Jews in (blank) - see page history of History of Jews in the United States, as well as specific pages, e.g. Dominique-France Loeb-Picard. Also, this user is blocked at WP:fr as a sock of their corresponding puppetmaster, Albion - see link. The account seems stale but editing from it was pretty extensive. JohnInDC (talk) 13:47, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Added User:Frenchallegory, a recently created SPA that has edited only Alexandre Gilbert (and appears to have been responsible for uploading the photo featured on that page). JohnInDC (talk) 13:58, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The odds that there is anyone else but ALO, in the entire world, with this idiosyncratic set of interests is vanishingly, infinitesimally, small. And that's before remembering that Frenchmedia1 has already, during his account's short existence, created and used a puppet. JohnInDC (talk) 11:20, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Additional information - apparently I once knew, but had forgotten, that over at :fr they long ago figured out that ALO / Albion was the owner of an art gallery in Paris - see this entry on my Talk page (which, as it happens, makes reference to the same Lady Gaga event trumpeted above by Frenchmedia1). JohnInDC (talk) 12:12, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, the connection was made zillion years ago since the whole scheme concerns the plaguing of a small gallery in France. Now the most important if you wanna figure out what's true and what's not, would be to try to find an official person who can actually answer to concrete questions. Are you interested in knowing how much i participate to the scene. Do you want to find out what's relevant and what is not on my point of view. There is 30 wiki creations (US) and 652 (FR) that are possibly erasable since someone found a way to compile the total contributions of so called "ALexLevyOne" and "Albion" on this page thanks to the informations of NotinDC: http://alexsh.blog.com. Of course, if there's no interest in "moving on", i will forget about it, letting this crazyness continue. And I'm not trumpetting anything I'm trying to explain how from my point of view, things get crazier each year. I feel like GEorge Clooney falling from the spaceship in Gravity (film). :)Frenchmedia1 (talk) 12:51, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
NotinDC claims to be the registered account version of the IP address listed above, which as noted, emerged without any prior editing history as a full-throated defender of Frenchmedia1 and the articles he has created. JohnInDC (talk) 12:14, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also notably, NotinDC has produced a link to a website that appears to list every article currently on :en or :fr created over the years by any of ALO's sockpuppets - through to the present. Like the community of idiosyncratic interests between Frenchmedia1 and the prior ALO socks, the likelihood approaches zero that a random, innocent new Wikipedia editor would know of such information. JohnInDC (talk) 13:58, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have to say that the random, innocent new Wikipedia editor knows more about it than I do. I hope I can be a help in cleaning the web from trash. If not I'm sorry that my life created such a mess on the web.Frenchmedia1 (talk) 17:10, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:Defretyu was created immediately on the heels of the last affirmative finding of puppetry, with the first edit being to recreate the deleted page Alexandre Gilbert as Alexandre Gilbert (Art). The IPs are Parisian addresses that have also extensively edited the page. Not asking CU - behavioral evidence is quite sufficient. JohnInDC (talk) 13:01, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the author and his IP socks are repeatedly removing the speedy delete template from Alexandre Gilbert (Art). Would the admin, upon blocking, please delete that page as well? Thanks. JohnInDC (talk) 14:03, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Adding User:RETRETRE, who has just created Alexandre Gilbert (France). JohnInDC (talk) 14:08, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This user's only action, so far, has been to create and edit (along with some ancillary edits to other articles) Gilbert Levy, an article that has been deleted multiple times under the title Marc Gilbert, that in its previous incarnations was created and edited almost solely by AlexLevyOne and his confirmed socks, and that appears to be about the father of the user behind all these accounts (the first three sources in the article are all written by "Alexandre Gilbert"). In addition, ETOUI2's style of fractured English is very familiar to anyone who has dealt with AlexLevyOne and his numerous socks before. I was sorely tempted to just delete the new article and block the account, but I suppose I might be considered involved, since I've initiated or commented on a number of the previous AlexLevyOne sock investigations. I am, however, morally certain that this is yet another ALO sock. Deor (talk) 11:07, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
