Andy Mabbett, User:Pigsonthewing, was Wikimedian in Residence at the Royal Society of Chemistry.
A Wikimedian in residence is an experienced Wikimedian, who works as such, inside an institution, much like an artist in residence.
This means that Andy is employed by the Society, to act as an advocate among its staff, partner organisations, members, and the general public, to encourage them to improve the coverage of chemistry in Wikipedia, its sister projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation, and other initiatives with an "open content" ethos.
Among other things, this involves:
- Explaining what "open content" means in this context, what the projects are, and how they work
- Supporting existing contributors to the projects, in improving coverage of chemistry-related content
- Training people to edit Wikipedia and other projects
- Advocating and explaining the use of open licences
- Running public engagement events, such as editathons
- Giving talks to interested groups
- Speaking at conferences
- Writing guest blog posts or articles
- Encouraging the use of Wikimedia projects in chemistry education
- Acting as a liaison between interested parties (such as putting Society members in other countries in touch with their local Wikimedia chapters)
- Encouraging the reuse of content from the projects
- Deploying existing Wikimedia projects, such as voice recording article subjects and QRpedia, in a chemistry context
The role's job description has been made available (please note that it is a copyright document, and not open licensed).
The residency follows an earlier editathon hosted by the society.
Andy is working 2.5 days each week (actual days vary). A project diary will note headline events and milestones.
Andy also maintains an RSC blog about the project, aimed at chemists rather than Wikimedians.
Over the coming months, Andy will be working with Royal Society of Chemistry staff and members to train and encourage them to contribute to Wikipedia and sister projects, in accordance with their respective policies and good practice. He will also be reaching out to Wikipedia Projects and others to see how the Society can support their work to improve chemistry-related content.
If you have any suggestions or requests, please leave them on this page's talk page.
Activities will include:
- Training Royal Society of Chemistry staff to edit Wikipedia
- Running public engagement events ("Editahons")
- Speaking at universities and other venues
- Encouraging uptake of ORCID identifiers - see WP:ORCID.
- Recording the voices of notable chemists - see WP:WikiVIP
