The result of the discussion was: Delete - as failing to significantly increase reader's understanding of the article. Just some commentary that will hopefully be of use to a new editor. I sympathize with the uploader's reasoning but images like this, that are generic and otherwise ordinary depictions of important events, often are found to fail WP:NFCC#8. It is usual here to ask that reliable sources talk about the image itself, or that a description of the event is in some ways incomprehensible without the image.- Peripitus (Talk) 23:28, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:NFCC#8. Stefan2 (talk) 15:11, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. There's no encyclopedic relevant information on this picture. It seems to be the common mistake that, since the image depicts an unique event, its irreplaceable (right!) and so we can ignore all other 9 criteria on WP:NFCC (wrong).
Even the fair use rationale fails to explain what's the purpose of using the image. It just says "This photograph depicts a singular, most important moment in the christening of SS Gustavus Victory.". So, what's the purpose of using it? --damiens.rf 18:35, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Keep. This is a historical photograph provided for use by the Gustavus Adolphus College Archives that depicts the sponsor of the SS Gustavus Victory, Marion Logan, who is mentioned in the article. She was deliberately chosen for this role for three main reasons, 1) she was a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, the namesake for the ship, 2) her husband was a Captain in the Army Air Force, and 3) her father was a former professor at Gustavus as well. She played a notable role in the history of the College, and that was why I felt it pertinent to include this photo at the launching of the ship. User:Rebecca_hare, 13 March 2014

The result of the discussion was: Kept - image of a non-free printed work in an article that (now) is primarily about the printed work. The goal posts moved with the creation of a new article during this debate - Peripitus (Talk) 23:48, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is a non-free albumbook cover that is not used to discuss the album in question. It is used in a section discussing the fact that many modern works of popular culture includes the folkloric character Juan Bobo (the subject of the article).

While it's undoubtedly relevant that such albums (and songs, and cartoons) depicting Juan Bobo exist, I don't see how we need non free material to convey this information to the article's readers. damiens.rf 18:31, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As far as including it in this particular article, the image appears right next to the text which relates to it. The image is that of an American Legends book cover. The accompanying text states that: "Given the centuries-long history of the Juan Bobo tales, and because Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory since 1898, Juan Bobo has been designated as an American folk character.[55][56] The American Legends children's books included Juan Bobo in a series of four folkloric books."
However, as I stated above, the inclusion in the Juan Bobo article is not even the issue here (though it clearly merits inclusion). The issue is the validity of the image file and its licensing - and they are valid.
One final note...the nominating editor wrote that this is a "non-free album cover." That is incorrect. It is a book cover - as stated in the text of the article, and in the caption under the image. Sarason (talk) 22:41, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The article states that Juan Bobo made his first appearance in the U.S. in 1921 (see the First U.S. collection section). Unfortunately, the nominating editor created this new infobox, placed the "1921" date in it, and thereby created the error which you now see in the infobox. I agree that this confusion deserves to be clarified, but not by deleting the photo.
With respect to the article "being about something else," please note the section of the article in which this image appears. That section is Juan Bobo in U.S. popular culture. The image under discussion here, is an image of a Juan Bobo book published as part of the American Legends series. The image thus shows that Juan Bobo has been recognized as a part of American popular culture. This book cover illustrates that precise point, in that particular section of the article. The image was not chosen at random, and the book which it illustrates is also discussed in the text of the article. Sarason (talk) 05:41, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We shouldn't be using non-free content just to "illustrate" information that can be easily conveyed without the aid of imagery. --damiens.rf 16:56, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image fails WP:NFCC#8 in both articles that it is used in: WBFB and WAEI (AM). The image is simply used for decoration or identification, which causes the image to fail WP:NFCC#8. -- TLSuda (talk) 23:55, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
