  • Propose renaming Category:Sámi-language songs to Category:Sámi songs
Nominator's rationale: This was just renamed as part of a batch adding the diacritic (see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 January 17). However, the title of this category was also changed from -languages to -language (plural to singular). This was presumably done in good faith on the grounds that "Sámi-language" sounds more like an adjective than "Sámi-languages". However, as there is not just one Sámi language but a few, and the category is explicitly "for songs sung in Sámi languages", the adjective "Sámi" is more appropriate; cf. Category:Sámi culture and Category:Sámi newspapers. – Fayenatic London 22:18, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Partial reversal of my own previous nomination at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 January 6 § European Parliament constituencies in the United Kingdom. Indeed, now that dates have been specified for the categories that needed it, on second thought it is non-standard and counter-productive to mention former in the name of the more generic categories. @Marcocapelle, BrownHairedGirl, and Peterkingiron: pinging contributors to previous discussion. Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALL, a category with one member that is unlikely to ever have grow. The single eponymous member is itself a somewhat contentious new/split article. Lithopsian (talk) 15:26, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per standard format for other state government categories. Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:39, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I can live with either variant. The parent category has a mix of upper & lower case. Arguably, "Government of Foo" is a title as well as a descriptor. Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:54, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: What's the purpose of this category? It's based on a German Wikipedia article that has not been translated, but that aside, it's not a part of any common tree. We don't have categories for 'locations of stuff'. Imagine, category for 'locations of McDonald restaurants', 'locations of bridges', 'locations of battles', 'locations of churches'... I don't think we want to go down that road with categories. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:23, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: this near-empty structure contains only a handful of redirects. Unlike college sports, there is very little content specific to high school sports teams. There are instead athletics sections in articles about high schools. This structure duplicates existing High school sports associations in the United States and Category:High school sports conferences and leagues in the United States which are much better structured and developed. Nominator's rationale: There is no content in the category about this Massachusetts high school sports conference besides the list of schools, and no other conference in parent Category:Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association leagues has separate categories for the conference and for the schools. Nominator's rationale: WP:OVERLAPCAT. These categories are populated with universities and colleges that are (were) members of this collegiate athletic conference, and seem to have an identical scope. The target follows the format of other categories at Category:Universities and colleges in the United States by former athletic conference. Note that separate Category:Former Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association teams is not affected by this nomination. Place Clichy (talk) 10:50, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: no consensus. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:28, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: US and Canada are the only exceptions in the Category:Municipalities (we probably need a 'by country' container category). I can't think of any reason why we would need to rise 'in' for those two countries and 'of' for the rest of the world, so I suggest standardizing the the more common form. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:53, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • There could be a discussion about the entire category some other time but it is not very meaningful to leave two exceptions in an otherwise consistent tree. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:37, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Of course it is meaningful: we are having that very discussion now. I have not commented on the Canadian case because I am not familiar with their political structures, The US situation I am well-acquainted with because a number of the variations figure heavily in my home state; in the New England township system the whole notion of "town" gets mutated into a system of counties-within-counties. I'm not convinced that it is necessary to hammer the American square peg in the rest-of-world round hole merely for consistency, especially since (from what I can see) just about any other solution would avoid that. Mangoe (talk) 15:18, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In Canada, municipalities are entities of the provinces, they have little actual power, unless accorded to them by the province. The federal government has nothing to do with them, as under the constitution, it is a provincial responsibility; so "of" is wrong in Canada. -- 70.31.205.108 (talk) 07:35, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"German municipalities" is bad, it introduced ambiguity, is it a German municipality in Switzerland as opposed to a French or Italian one? Or one in Alsace-Lorraine, Poland, Czech Sudetenland (ah, WWII's casus belli) ? Or Armenian ones in Azerbaijan (Nagorno-Karabakh)? Or Turkish ones in Greece (Thrace) ? -- 70.31.205.108 (talk) 07:42, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry, Carlos, but DC is a territory, the only one specified by the Constitution. Washington is/was a municipality in the District. The others were Georgetown and Alexandria. No taxation without representation.
    William Allen Simpson (talk) 17:12, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is contrary to the usual thought. Municipalities are in each sovereign state or territory, and merely of the US. We explicitly decided so many years ago on this umbrella distinction, and it was recorded in our guidelines. The umbrella "of" relationship is more distant than "in" the subject. Same with any other administrative or geographical features.

  • Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Grand Cordons of the Order of the Throne
  • Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Commanders of the Order of the Throne
  • Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Knights of the Order of the Throne
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OVERLAPCAT and WP:OCAWARD)
Being Moroccan royalty is absolutely defining for Prince Moulay Rachid of Morocco and Princess Lalla Malika of Morocco which is why we have Category:Moroccan royalty. Being awarded the Order of the Throne for being a Moroccan royal or courtesan is a redundant way of categorizing the royal family. (The original intent of the award was broader so there are also a few prominent non-Royal Moroccan and foreign royal recipients—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6—but they just mention the award in passing so it doesn't seem defining to them either.) There wasn't a list so I created one here in the main article for any reader interested in the topic.- RevelationDirect (talk) 00:20, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Order of Parfaite Amitié
  • Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Knights of the Order of Parfaite Amitié
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OVERLAPCAT and WP:OCAWARD) and, for the parent category, WP:C2F
Being a member of the Bavarian Royal House of Thurn und Taxis is absolutely defining which is why we have have Category:Thurn and Taxis. According to the Order of Parfaite Amitié article, members of Thurn and Taxis are awarded with Knighthood when they turn 18.
This is a redundant category since nearly all the recipients are already under that family category. (The only two exceptions are Alexander, Count of Schönburg-Glauchau whose sister married into the family and King Maximilian II of Bavaria who is, well, the King of Bavaria.) There wasn't a list so I created one right here in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. If the knight subcategory is deleted, the parent category will only have the one eponymous article left. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:20, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
