Hi! Pleased to see someone expand this article, it was quite a way down my to-do list! I wonder if you could possibly clarify the chronology, though. You wrote that Johnny Marr had just come away from The Smiths - which I would interpret as August 1987, meaning that the song in some form pre-dates MacColl's 1989 album "Kite" (to which Marr also contributed) and was held over.
