Operation Tarnished Badge is an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Operation (OCDETF) investigation centered around public corruption within the Robeson County Sheriff's Office with charges ranging from drug conspiracy, conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO), conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the government, and conspiracy to commit satellite piracy charges[1][2]. At least 180 cases had to be dismissed by the Robeson County District Attorney[3] as a result of the charges brought against 22 deputies (to date) and Sheriff Glen Maynor. Although the investigation began over a decade later, on February 1, 1988 Eddie Hatcher and Timothy Jacobs held the local newspaper staff hostage a block away from the county courthouse with the sole demand that then-Governor Jim Martin would commit to an independent investigation of allegations of corrupt county government, unsolved murders and drug trafficking in the area[4].
