Lady Blanche Howard married 7th Duke of Devonshire

Lady Mary Gascoyne-Cecil married 10th Duke of Devonshire

Hon. Deborah Freeman-Mitford, one of the Mitford sisters, married 11th Duke of Devonshire

Major George, a broadcaster?, was ennobled. Hugh Cavendish, a Conservative politician, was ennobled. The other two relate to the House of Lords Act 1999. As with his father and grandfather, 7th Marquess of Salisbury sat in the House of Lords by a writ in acceleration (the last to be issued). Known as Viscount Cranbourne, as the leader of the Conservative Party in the Lords he, in his own words, 'rushed in like an ill-trained spaniel' and made a deal with Tony Blair to pass the House of Lords Act which removed the hereditary peers' automatic right to a writ of summons. The deal involved a retention of 92 hereditary peers, and the amendment was proposed by Lord Weatherill as a formality. As part of this removal of hereditary peers, former leaders of the house were given life peerages, and so Viscount Cranbourne was ennobled in 1999. After the hereditary peers' elections, Blair's Labour Party offered some hereditary peers who were not elected life peerages so they could continue to sit in the Lords. Some Labour peers were ennobled, with the Liberal Democrats the only other party to take up this offer. Thus 3rd Viscount Chandos and 6th Lord Redesdale (who were both ejected from the house in 1999), were ennobled in 2000.
