AfD for LoPbN[edit]

You've been contributing on LoPbN, and might want to participate on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people by name (2nd nomination). The vote went as Del-ward as 8 Del / 2 Keep, and now stands at 12 Del / 11 Keep. I hope for a clear consensus to keep, and would appreciate it, if you care to weigh in. Thanks in any case, and happy holidays.

I don't know whether you know (and maybe I should have brought it up sooner) but Esperanza has been "deleted" as a result of this MfD. It may affect your userboxes in due course. I wasn't a member so was not aware of any problems, but it makes interesting reading. Looks like they are going to keep several of the associated projects, though. Jesus[edit]

I recently found that the Jesus article on Wikipedia is the first item that comes up when you search for "Jesus" on the world’s most widely used search engine, Google.

Please edit the Jesus article to make it an accurate and excellent representation of Him.

The Jesus article may be a person’s first impression of Jesus. It would be nice if their first impression was from a Christian or the Bible, but for so many in these new days it probably comes from the Internet. Watch the Jesus page to keep it focused on Him. Thanks a lot.

Also, watch out to follow Wikipedia's Policies and guidelines. It is especially hard for the Three-revert rule and the Neutral point of view policy to be followed because of the nature of the article, but please follow these policies along with citing sources so that the article does not get locked from editing and can't be improved further. Thanks again. Scifiintel 17:29, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Tata Sky[edit]

I inserted a useful link on comparison of different DTH players in India in the 'External links' section which another user has been reverting continously or changing it with another link calling it vandalism. My purpose is simply to enhance the usefulness of the article with a useful link for other readers that I found on a blog.

I was tracking the article to ensure that he does not revert/change my external links everytime. He did it again and when I reverted back his edit, you have reverted it back to his version calling my edit a spam/vandalism. Why is it so? Thanks for your kind attention. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.184.185.45 (talk) 17:41, 3 January 2007 (UTC).

conversation copied from other talk page for reference
If you will notice, i reverted to a version before any of the edits began when neither of the links are there. A link to a blog is probably not a good idea as it is not a reilable source of information. If the other user adds the links, I will remove them as well. Hope this helped. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:44, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Template location[edit]

Yeah, I was wondering about that, I'm ashamed to say it took me a very, very long time to figure out how to do it - until I saw Template:Douglas airliners under the "See also" heading of the aircontent thing and went "d'oh!". :-) Now that I know how to do it I'll work on fixing 'em as they turn up. Also just added Template:Douglas aircraft to the X-3 Stiletto, so that's done (for now, anyway) - whew! ISBN Correction[edit]

Hi Chris, thanks for the note on the Franklin, VA page. I am one of a handful of editors correcting over 2000 ISBN errors. The one in question comes up as short, not incorrect. Many isbn's show up that way. We have been correcting these so that a system robot can them convert them to the new 13 digit isbn's. I would appreciate your efforts to locate the proper 10 digit number. You can edit it in or give it to me and I'll load it. The bot that found the error in the first place, SMACKbot, left a template so citing the error. Once you fix the error, the template needs to be removed along with the "Cannot locate" statement. Then the error flag will go away. I am using some fairly powerful resources and could not locate the isbn. I did find OCLC codes. As a last resort, we probably would have dropped the bad ISBN and loaded the OCLC #. Thanks for the msg.Ekotkie 21:25, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Chris, see OCLC. EdJohnston 03:36, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Chris, as EdJ (another person in the ISBN correction business)has indicated, OCLC can be found right here on Wikipedia. The term, Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) comes from a library cataloging function. In many ways it is the system of choice within the world of Librarians. (I happen to be married to one and she just shakes her head at ISBNs and is also on a Wiki page) When you check your local library on this errant ISBN on the "Timber Tycoon" you will probably find that they also have additionally listed the OCLC along with an appropriate ISBN. I suspect that what has happened is that this is a limited production book dedicated to that area in VA. I was able to locate it with an OCLC #. Thank you for your gracious award. I'm just trying to help out the system and get that final roll over to the 13 digit system finished. By the way. I meant to explain a bit more on that number of yours being "short". What I have found is that a lot of our errant ISBN's seem to experience either the leading or trailing number to be missing and the bot merely marks it as "short". Thanks again for your assist and have a great day.Ekotkie 04:31, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

User:Fattdoggy[edit]

I took a look at his contributions. My take is they probably are generally good faith, but a lot of them are extremely ill advised. The message to Jimmy Wales' talk page and the repeated edits to the Template:Wdefcon are particularly unfortunate. I can see why any admin would consider this malicious. I would likely have blocked him for disruption, though perhaps not indefinitely.

The best way forward would be a polite email to user:Winhunter, the blocking admin. If you, or another editor, were willing to mentor Fattdoggy and ensure he doesn't make similar mistakes in the future, I believe this would be help. If you do take this on, be aware that you would be to some extent accountable for Fattdoggy's edits, so you need to be sure that you want to take that on and that Fattdoggy agrees. Good luck, Gwernol 00:51, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Chris, as a friend, I would ask you to heed Gwenol's advice very closely. The user in question has made some very – odd edits lately. (Did you know about the template he used in the first example within your first days of Wikipedia?) Tread carefully, mon brave. I would like to assume good faith, too, but... tread carefully. Timber Tycoons[edit]

Hi, according to Amazon (ASIN B000JF398Q, ASIN B0007395WY , ASIN B000J9Y6L6) it is published by Southampton County Historical Society, Southampton County Historical Society, and Wiliam Byrd Press respectivly. The same goes for Abebooks. I would suspect that Southampton County Historical Society is the publishers and WBP the printers. As for the ISBN, 87-063258 is clearly not one. Possibly, if this was part of a series it may be an ISSN - ISSN 8706-3258. It is also possible that the book was published by two organisations simultaneously. Would you be able to examine the book again? Regards, Rich Farmbrough, 14:05 13 January 2007 (GMT).

Aviation-terminology-stub[edit]

Hi - it has come to our notice that you have recently created a new stub type. As it clearly states at WP:STUB, at the top of most stub categories, on the template page for new Wikiprojects and in many other places on Wikipedia, new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies, and whether better use could be made of a WikiProject-specific talk page template.

In the case of your new stub type, it appears to be a reasonable split IMO, but standard naming would be for aviation-term-stub, not aviation-terminology-stub. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there aabout its creation. And please, in future, propose new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 23:55, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for the barnstar, and for the kind words. To be honest, the stub creation procedure is meant to be a tiny bit off-putting, just to stop the huge number of ridiculous stub types that have been made over the last couple of years. Sensible stubs like yours aren't really any problem, other than things like their naming - but if if it discourages people from some of the dafter things that have been made in the past, it's a good thing :) Grutness...wha? 01:26, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

By the way, i have moved the template ((Aviation-terminology-stub)) to ((Aviation-term-stub)), changed all of the articles tagged with the previous to the latter. I am not familiar with what needs to be done to delete the old stub type. Does it qualify for speedy deletion or does it need to go through a formal stub type for deletion?

Well, since you were the only editor and it's no longer used, and you;'ve agreed to its deletion, it is speediable... so I just did :) Grutness...wha? 06:05, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Rating of importance[edit]

Hello, Chris. I would like to know on what basis you gave DO-254 low importance. Do you know it's the standard used for development of most avionics in (non-military) aircrafts today? I think it deserves at least a "mid" importance. The similar topic DO-178B, which is for software in aircrafts, should probably have the same importance as DO-254. Keep up your great work! Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937[edit]

Just a few comments (I withdrew my objection):

  1. There r some newspaper articles, but I dont like newspapers too much (they dont get the numbers right sometimes)...
  2. I think the "global concept of aircraft" shall be based on (and depends on) a sane (not necessarily prussianly strict; intuition may be as good as computer-like sobriety; but what we see in this BAL/DHL accident is too chaotic for my taste) set of rules.

Deleting Comparison of IRC clients[edit]

I have removed your PD template from this article. Your reason for deleting it seemed condense to me, and I don't really understand why you think the article is "Not a product comparison" (quote from memory, please correct if it's very wrong). It contains a fair amount of tables comparing features amongst different IRC clients, most if not all of which have their own Wikipedia articles, and are well known and used by thousands of people in a lot of cases (notably MIRC, X-Chat and Irssi). So I don't really see how the page is original research, or self-promotion (as it is a comparison with only factual information listed). I apologize in advance for not being a frequent visitor (even though I have a user account), so it may take some time for me to reply to you here or on the article's talk page (wherever you feel fit to continue discussion if you deem that necessary). Aircraft specification template[edit]

Hi Chris,

While editing the Short Seamew specifications I have come across something that may need to be catered for: height/width for carrier aircraft with wings folded for storage. I have added these two specs to the Seamew by interposing a "* line"; this looks sort of ok but messes up the preceding entry: the closing round bracket of the alt-dimension comes after the interposed line in both cases. Is there a clean way of inserting such lines into the template without messing it up? Many thanks. TraceyR 20:42, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Supplementary comments: it would also be useful to have a specification parameter for wing sweep (in degrees) (see Short Sherpa's recent history); the Short SB/5 had three different setting for sweep during its life; could this situation also be catered for? Perhaps a "minimum sweep" and "maximum sweep" would be good for e.g. the F-111 and other variable geometry wings. I realise that these suggestions add to the complexity of the template, but they would be useful. Thanks for your contribution here! TraceyR 01:03, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Just for reference. Here is my reply.
I have reviewed the dif here. What it looks like is there was a large, cited section, that was removed. I have read the article and the information may have been redundant, but the citations were not. Removing that section without moving the citations to the other section left the information on that topic unreferenced, and therefore subject to more scrutiny, and having the possibility of being removed. I have no problem with the removal, just along as the remaining materials get cited. If you would like any help with this, please let me know on my User talk page, and my apolagies on the warning, (Which I have removed). JSBSim[edit]

Greetings. As to your proposal to delete the JSBSim article due to it being a "Not notable open source project". I beg to differ (of course, I am biased :). JSBSim is the default flight model for FlightGear, has been recently incorporated into the OpenEaagles framework, and is used around the world by students and industry. It is perhaps the only open source flight model library, and was the first to use XML to describe aircraft models for flight simulation. The chief architect (that would be me) has spent the past 10 years coordinating an international group of developers on the project. Developing advanced flight simulations for space launch vehicles and doing ascent trajectory analysis is also my "day job".

If you could be more specific as to how you would like to see the article improved, I might be able to make time to do that. If you have other questions about JSBSim, feel free to ask me. You can reach me at jon *at* jsbsim.spamblock.org. Obviously, remove the ".spamblock". --Jonsberndt 05:36, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments on my RFA. As of now, I do not care about the outcome of it, I did not even ask to be nominated. I however would like to clear up a misunderstanding. I at no point claim that I plan on using reversion tools to handle content disputes. I made a mistake on RC patrol, and reverted a good faith edit as vandalism. That is what I am claiming will happen again in the future. I am human and I make mikstakes. If I were to say, "I will never accidently revert a good faith edit as vandalism again," as good as it would make me sound, I would be lying to myself and everybody else. If that makes me unfit to be an administrator, that I will have no problem withdrawing my RFA. To be honest, I am a little frustrated with it currently because it seems like a vote. So many, Supports per nom. I think those are people just perusing RFA's and going with the flow. I have much more respect for Oppose nominations (especially ones with a good explanation as to why, such as yours). You are an administrator that I have seen around alot, and have respect for. Do you personally reccomend that I withdraw my RFA, due to thisRC patrol mistake?. If you honsetly believe that it shows I am not worthy to be an administrator, I respect that opinion much more than the torrent of empty Supports. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:13, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

It is impossible to state "I will never accidentally do something again". How can you know? All you have to do is pledge to never use your rollback tool for anything other than vandalism reverts. The problem was not that you misused the java tool, and you accepted that it was a mistake. My issue is that you outright stated 'I'll probably make the same mistake again' - you should not. It is not a complex issue, and it's not a difficult judgement call to make. Don't use it for content disputes. Make sure an edit is vandalism before you use one of the tools to revert. The rule is in place as using a tool provides no edit summary, providing no clue as to why you reverted an edit. In the case of blatant vandalism, tere's no need, but if it's a good faith edit, it's now a content issue, so changes should be backed up by explanations. Misquoting George Santayana, "we must learn from our mistakes, or we are condemned to repeat them". Proto:: 14:19, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

I still feel that this RfA is occuring too quickly after the last attempt, but I am no longer opposing. I've switched to neutral, and I can't say I'll be sad when you're sysopped.--Scimitar parley 15:42, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Your Deletion of my post[edit]

I posted information on a non-profit program, Dynamic Youth Community, that helps kids with drug problems , you deleted it for being too much like an advert.. What can I do to make it more "appropriate"? This was not a ploy to make money, simply a means to give information to parents that may need help with there kid's drug problem. Please respond.... User:mikedycintake 1 February 2007 (UTC)

The agency is definately notable. The federal government did a study on the agency..the result was a manual that sets the standard for how adolescents should be treated. Additionally, there was a book published with 11 exceptional programs including DYC...can i copy a chapter from this book if i credit the book as the source? I will try to put something together noting these references...thanks for your help. I am a graduate of this program who was lucky enough that my parents stumbled upon it. Many of my friends died before they found help...I just want to get the info out there...

Congrats![edit]

Article Deletion[edit]

You deleted the page "Windows Vista Service Pack 1". Although you didn't give a reason, I understand it was because of lack of references. I was going to cite them but before that you deleted the page. I'm relatively new here, so if there was anything else that I should do to make it more "appropriate", let me know. On the Lesbian vandal[edit]

Is there any way to find out who is creating these attacks? I'm wondering if it's somebody I reported awhile ago for vandalism or if it's somebody after me. Is there any way to track their IP address? Because if it's in an area near me I would like to know. Darthgriz98 18:24, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Reference to B-36 and P-51 edit wars[edit]

Akradecki, in reference to your comment--obviously you think your way is the only way, and anyone elses does not matter and does not count. With that attitude, I think it violates working out to an argreement. I already stated why I believe the P-51 photograph should be left. The context of the subject matter. Is the P-51 used in airshows? Sure, but when was it made and when did it see military action for what it was designed to do? Used a military fighting aircraft in the skies of World War II, not paraded as an antique relic of a goneby era. Obviously you tend to think this matter is a closed and done deal discussion. Since you decided to change the photograph with a disucssion or dialogue of the matter, and the excuse that the photograph that was previously on the page was of "poor" quality. Is a poor judgement and reason for changing it. So who is right? Obivously you think you are, and vice versa.

In reference to the B-36 photograph, I've already made comments on the dicusssion page. Just a FYI, the United States Air Force owns and operates that museum. The photograph I provided is of better quality and better representation of the aircraft in lieu of Rogerd's photograph which he provided.
1. The image is at an angle
2. There is a spectator of the musem in the image
3. The quality of the photograph is poorer than the one I supplied and
4. The photograph I provide shows much more of the aircraft versus what he supplied which mainly focuses on the fuslage and not the entire subject matter

Again, this beckons back to the original problem...who is right? It's stated in the Wiki Guidelines that Wikipedia is not a democracy. -Signaleer 18:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

First and foremost, in reference to the P-51 changes, the user BillCJ was the individual who made the first changes to the article without even discussing it.

Please see changes: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=P-51_Mustang&diff=103326453&oldid=103321047

Secondly, he was the first one to make assumptions and point the fingers at me without even having a chance to defense myself: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AP-51_Mustang&diff=103519676&oldid=103510194

If this kind of behavior is tolerated and within the Wiki Guidelines, then fine, I will let them have their charade on being reporting for my "vandalism" and "disruptive behavior" but the attacks by certain users on Wiki is absurd! The way in which you came across is also in a deragatory and unprofessional manner. -Signaleer 20:20, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

68.117.46.48[edit]

Hello. I have no problem with you saying that there is not a long enough history to block here, but I'm surprised that you consider the messages posted to my talk page to be in good faith. If I am misinterpreting here, please explain or correct my frame of reference. Did you notice that another admin warned the IP in the past regarding personal attack to my talk page? Respectfully --After Midnight 0001 20:46, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I looked through the edits of User:68.117.46.48 and particulary, this one I viewed as trying to make a valid addition to the article. While it may or may not have been, i sensed good faith here. Assuming that as good faith, your reversion here (also in good faith) appears as vandalism to the first edit because he felt he was making a valid addition. Possible offended or feeling that he valid contribution was removed he viewed you as a vandal (which you of course are not). Hope this helped! If you have any more questions, please let me know. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:51, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to explain. Note that I am not asking you to change your decision here. I would like to give you some additional background here, in case this situation is escalated further by the IP.
  • The edit in question references 3 people in the text: Leroy DiMaggio and Joey McGloff, who both have 0 web hits, and Tony Lugosi, who has very few web hits to a freeweb article about a band it seems. This is clearly not a good faith edit after a bit of research.
  • The edit [3] was first made by 146.57.10.32 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) who has only ever made 2 edits, both vandalism.
  • The edit was reverted [4] by Cryptic (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) 5 hours later.
  • The vandalism was restored [5] by 68.117.46.48 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), with an edit summary of "rv vandal" 2 days later in that IP's 1st edit ever.
  • The edit was reverted [6] by me 2 hours later.
  • The vandalism was restored [7] by 68.117.46.48, with an edit summary of "grammar fix" 4 hours later in that IP's 2nd edit ever.
  • The edit was reverted [8] by me 7 hours later. I also post a "test" on the IP's talk page.
  • The vandalism was restored [9] by 216.41.144.41 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), with an edit summary of "get a life and stop trolling wikipedia, After Midnight" 22 minutes later in that IP's only edit ever.
  • The edit was reverted [10] by me 20 minutes later.
  • 68.117.46.48 uses its 3rd edit ever to post a false warning on my talk page[11]
  • The vandalism was restored [12] by 68.117.46.48, with an edit summary of "rv" 30 minutes later in that IP's 4th edit ever.
  • I request help on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive186#Joe DiMaggio.
  • The edit was reverted [13] by Lucy-marie (talk · contribs) 15 minutes later.
  • Lucy-marie requests page protection at the proper page.
  • Protection is issued by Gnangarra (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA)
  • Gnangarra warns the IP [14] and places a disregard message on my talk page.
  • The IP redacts my test warning and removes Gnangarra's on their talk page[15] to make it appear as though I was commending them for their work!!! in that IP's 5th edit ever.
  • I revert the redact with an edit history of "please don't change the intended meaning of our comments"
  • 68.117.46.48 uses its 6th edit ever to post a 2nd false warning on my talk page [16].
  • I request assistance at WP:AIV
  • Ryulong (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) reverts vandalism on my talk page.
  • You make determination that IP 68.117.46.48 is good faith, but you also post test4 on talk page
  • I request explanation.
  • You post reply to me.
  • You retract your test 4 and replace it with a welcome banner.
Please consider this additional data, should you become involved again in this situation. --After Midnight 0001 21:51, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

DYK error[edit]

The Acts of Parliament in the UK are always refered to as the Such and Such Act, Date as there may be more than one with the same name. In this case it was the Lunacy (Vacating of Seats) Act 1886, not the Lunacy Act 1845. I won't put it back as it is obviously confusing. Yomanganitalk 14:26, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

of 1886 would have been fine. Those acquainted with the British legal system would know what it meant without the "of", but I don't suppose that is a large part of the audience. I don't think there is another Lunacy (Vacating of Seats) Act anyway, and we have no article for it, so no harm done. Cheers, Yomanganitalk 14:34, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Chris, and thanks for the tip and the award! I have been trying to make sure that all the vandals that I report have all the required warnings and have vandalized past their final warning. Could you give me an example of some of the ones I've messed up? Thanks again! -- P.B. Pilhet / Talk 17:33, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

I see what you mean by your first example; that IP's final warning had been a long time ago. As for the "one you just noticed," well, that IP had received so many warnings in the past, I figured it simply needed to be blocked. I reported it to AIV and warned it at the same time, so that's why my warning was after the report. It looks like Alphachimp has since blocked the address anyway. Sorry about my mistakes! -- P.B. Pilhet / Talk 17:52, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Chris! By the way, I have interest in becoming an admin myself. I've been around since August last year, have over two thousand edits (sadly, my main space is rather shabby), and contribute most of my time to vandal fighting. I've also had an RfA before, but I was way too new. Do you think I'm admin material, and if so, when do you think I should run again (and how could I improve)? -- P.B. Pilhet / Talk 18:00, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
I had also figured that I would fail if I ran now. I'll stay involved in AfD discussions, and will try to improve my accuracy at AIV. When I have more main space contribs (which will probably be awhile), that's when I figured I would run. Thanks for the advice! -- P.B. Pilhet / Talk 18:12, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

The original warning was inflamatory as it basically branded me an idiot by saying i did not know how to use wikipedia. That is why it was removed and I would not remove a warning i did not find inflamatory and thought was justified. Thank you for your concern. First off, here is my rationale for removal. here last warning is at 18:31. here last contrib is at 18:30 (still no edits since and user has not been blocked. at 18:34 i viewed that the vandal had not repeated and removed them from the list. This removal was not in err, however me choosing not to enforce a punitive block, which is against wikipedia blocking pilicy. Hope this helps! Range blocks[edit]

Chris, yes you can range block IPs, although I've never done it myself. The documentation is found at Wikipedia:Blocking_IP_addresses#Blocking_ranges which has links to the details. As that page warns, exercise caution when doing this - in particular it should probably be a "soft" block - i.e. make sure you enable account creation so that IP users can create accounts for themselves. Good luck, Gwernol 21:04, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Blocking[edit]

Hi there. Thanks for dealing with Goldendoggy on such short notice. I do believe, however, that the 24-hour block is not enough. Bobabobabo has created (and continues to create) many sockpuppets, and in the past, Ryulong has dealt with them with indefinite blocks. I think it would be best if this were done in this case as well, as to prevent more trouble from the Goldendoggy acount from occurring again. --Benten 01:54, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Blocking of anon IP, banned user[edit]

Hi. You blocked User:80.192.242.187 for disruptive edits. This is a sock of a persistent ban evader User:Irate. He has started editing again as the block has expired. I recommend a block of a week until his IP changes. This edit links him to the last confirmed sock account he used which was permanently blocked. Thanks. MRSCTalk 12:18, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Censoring RFK. Jr.[edit]

Thanks for taking care of that IP. I'm not clear as to why we have been targeted, I think it's that guy who kept trying to add his myspace page to the article. He called C-Span the other day and tried to direct traffic to his myspace by saying there was a link at RFK's wikipedia article. Maybe I romanticize the concept of a free online encyclopedia too much but in my opinion, trying to use the wiki to shill for your site is just plain wrong. Anyway, thanks again. Cheers. Chris, I left a similar message on Joseph's talk page, but I wanted to thank you personally for the work you did with the Dominator page move issue. I originally was involved at the beginning of that mess, but I got called into work because our medivac helo broke, so I was up to my armpits in Bell 412 for a few hours. My abundant thanks to you, Joseph and the other project members who stepped in and did the brunt of the hard work with this issue. Akradecki 02:19, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

BTW, I forgot to mention earlier, I see from your userboxen that you're in Virginia. Barnstar[edit]

Cheers chris for the barnstar, I'm not sure if i deserve it though! I wasn't at all trying to bite the user at WP:RFCN, I even gave him a welcome message before asking him about his username, it was just meant to be advice, not simply telling him to change his username. But I guess it didn't go too well and did seam like I was trying to force him to change his name. Might just drop the suggestions for a while and stick to commenting on usernames, cheers again RyanPostlethwaiteSee the mess I've created or let's have banter 18:18, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism from 165.248.247.133[edit]

WP:AIV[edit]

I know how AIV works. Did you even look at his contribs and talk page? He's done nothing but vandalism, which he obviously knows is wrong. There's no point putting a up a warning. Also, the comment on his talk page about him improving the Cotton Gin article is incorrect, that was actually another IP user, this user replaced Eli Whitney with Ron Jeremy. He's been banned before and got a warning in the recent past. He knows it's wrong, he enjoys attention. -- febtalk 18:54, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar. You'll notice, however, that after you warned him, he was blocked before he had a chance to vandalize more (four minutes between his vandalism of Zachary Taylor and Martin Van Buren). I am aware of dynamic and shared IPs, however the vandalism in the contribs is very consistant, and grounds for banning even if it were multiple people. Anyone who wants to legitimately edit wikipedia can always sign up for an account through another connection -- febtalk 19:02, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

In the case of User:64.8.175.129 he has already recieved a Fourth level warning. LukeSurl 20:49, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Help Request[edit]

Hi Chris. This is not aviation-related, but I am having a problem with some IP users on the Atlanta Braves page. They keep making changes (described at Talk:Atlanta Braves), but will not engage in discussion at all. THe last user, User:146.74.1.99, has made the last two changes (today and Jan 31), and has a history of vandalism on his contributions page (including self-described page blankings).

I have asked for discussion in every revert of these chenges,a nd opened a discussion on the talk pge, but so far no one has even responded. Because of the multiple IPs used, I havent tried to contact the users directly on the matter, but I have left 2 warnings on the last IP user's page.

I have considered asking for help on the Baseball Project page, but even if this is a difference of interpretation, the users are using disruptive tactics, so I did not feel this would really help. If you cannot help directly, could you point me towards someone who could? Thanks for your time, and your contributions to WP:AIR. - BillCJ 20:51, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Vandal reporting[edit]

User 216.109.5.50[edit]

User 216.109.5.50 has been banned 3 times in 3 weeks.

6 days ago he/she had the following warning:

"Regarding edits made during 2007-01-29 (UTC) to French Revolution Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia."

Sure, he/she was subsequently blocked for further vandalism, but within 1 day after coming back, he/she then vandalised Rocket again.

But that warning still stands, so the user has been recently warned, the fact that he was blocked afterwards is not in the wikipedian rules as a disqualifying condition. It's not like the user can go 'I never knew it was against the rules to vandalise!' Exactly where does it say there has to be at least one warning per block? The user has been recently warned.WolfKeeper 21:23, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

((UsernameConcern))[edit]

It's working. Try it out! So much of the phrasing is a matter of personal style that I encourage people to paraphrase it their own way if they prefer, or even write their own text as if this didn't exist -- but for those of us too harried and/or tired to type long notes or find diplomatic words, it may be helpful. Would you be interested in some templates that I developed for the "Where I have been" section of your user page? For nation and/or province names, use ((User:Will Pittenger/templates/GetCountryName)) and ((User:Will Pittenger/templates/GetProvinceName)).

Or you can use the most capable version that I use. It's ((User:Will Pittenger/templates/Nation Flag Entry)) and ((User:Will Pittenger/templates/Province Flag Entry)). Enjoy them. Question about not blocking 195.194.144.2[edit]

Chrislk02, thanks for your comment on my talk page clarifying the policy on blocking IP addresses. I appreciate that it's quite likely that the vandals using 195.194.144.2 are different people at different times. That said, quite a lot of vandalism comes from that IP. For example, of the 18 contributions from 1st February to now, I count two that aren't vandalism / rubbish. Would a block on anonymous contributions not be appropriate in this situation? Your message[edit]

Why are you telling me this? When people are bullying me and harassing me (and worse, being patronizing!) and accusing me of all sorts of crap for no good reason don't I have a reason to be angry? It may not help my case, but already they condemned me (and without my knowledge, when I logged in the other day and saw the message and the discussion, I was not only flabbergasted, but incredulous at the length of discussion!) and I am still incredulous. People need to wake up and smell the coffee and realize that the world does not revolve around them and their personal views and it does not give them the right to say things about me that are not true. Can you show me some diffs that are vandalism? Until I see anything clearley otherwise I have to agree with what Admin User:CBDunkerson has stated. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:39, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I use disruptive edits and vandalism interchangeably. To me they are the same thing, and are not in good faith. If there is a better term that fits here, please tell me, but it's not a mere content dispute. I have attemped to cover both views of the issue in dispute, but the IP user still removes them. He won't discuss it at all, what else can I do but treat this as vadalism? This user has used at least 5 separate IP addresses, so it's impossible to actually try to talk with him. I have tried to discuss things on the article talk page, but he refuses to communicat, or even accept compromises. And now CBD is insulting me by acting like I am engaging in a mere revert war, as if I haven't tried to communicate at all! I have, and the disruptive edits have continued. What else can we do here short of semi-protecting the page?

To be honest, I don't know how much longer I will continue to edit on Wikipedia if things do not change. As long as unregistered users are allowed to edit, this garbage will continue. It is getting to the point where it's not worth the trouble. THe WP:AIR project is pretty good, but I am fed up with editing non-aviation articles. CBD has accused me of not accepting compromise, but how how can you when all your attempts to compromise are still reverted? - BillCJ 18:08, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I feel ya, it can be frustrating. That is one of the major controveries on wikipedia is whether anons can edit. However, there is a fine line between good faith but bad content edits and blatant vandalism. I myself am guilty of calling some good faith edits (they hmay have been in bad taste but nontheless good faith) edits vandalism. When i started here, my edits may have been seen as vandalism because I did not know any better. That is why so much care is often taking in protecting anons vs named editors. An anon can convert to a named editor that may become a major contributor. The trick is, learning how to appeal to new editors and get them involved in a friendly manner. Hope this has helped some! Hope you dont leave wikipedia, I enjoy seeing you around WP:AIRCRAFT. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:12, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. I know its a big issue about IP editors. Is there a central page for discussing this issue? I would certainly like to get involved in the discussion of the issue. As to the article in question, I really beleive this is someone acting in bad faith, though I have no concrete proof of it. I am basing this on the style of edits, and the fact that he changes all attempts to compromise, and won't communicate. Maybe I'm wrong to to believe that his edits are in bad faith, but I have seen newbie edits before (including my own), and this isn't the same thing.- BillCJ 18:23, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

RE: John van geen[edit]

Good day. Could you provide reliable references which confirm the accuracy of the content in the article on John van geen? The query I issued provided less than two dozen hits. --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 17:42, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

for the year 1966. He is a real, notable person. I forgot to add my maintenace tags when removing the speedy notice. I have now added an ((accuracy)) and ((Expand)) maintenance template to the article. Hope this helps. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:45, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
I actually went back and created the article more appropriatley based on that link. If you look at the hidden comments (added by the creating editor), it gave the location they got the information from and explained it was there first article. There was no reason that article should have been speedily deleted so I stand by my original decision of removing the speedy tag. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:57, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Re. speedy deletion[edit]

Hello Chris. Thanks for telling me about this admin hang-on template. I've never seen anything of the kind. Although I think that it might be a good idea, I can't think of a workable solution for such template. Any user, especially the creator of an SD candidate, could place the admin hang-on template thereby tricking admins and hindering the whole deletion process. But well, maybe your thread will produce good ideas. :-) Regards, Húsönd 00:39, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of Kitty Cottage wikipedia page[edit]

Hello-

I created a wikipedia site a few weeks ago for a local cat shelter called the Kitty Cottage in Blue Bell, PA. Could you please help me understand why this site was deleted? I felt that I did a good job of linking to other wikipedia pages and giving full information. Other local pet shelters from around the U.S. have their own wikipedia pages, so I don't understand why another such page would not be acceptable.

Lunarcleo 03:06, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Lunarcleo

The article was written like an advertisement. It also did not assert why your cat shelter was more notable than the cat shelter down the road. There were also very few, if any third party reliable sources citing the article as well as you may have a Conflict of interest in the creation of this article. These are all very important when writing an article for wikipedia. If you feel that the article can be written in a manner that does not read like an advertisement with reilable third party sources asserting why this shelter is notable and have it written from a Neutral point of view, it would possible not get deleted. If you need help with this, please let me know. Thanks -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 03:14, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Unblock[edit]

Dear Chris. You have recently blocked URL 218.189.215.179 from editing as you regard it as a Spambot. This is the URL of a secondary school in Hong Kong where I have been encouraging my students to use wikipedia and wikibooks for collaborative learning. Please, please, please unblock us!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidjohncock (talkcontribs)

The ip adderss specified was mass adding of links to sites for viagra and other medication. These actions were the definition of spam. The block was temporary and should expire soon. However, if the spam continues it will more than likley get blocked for a much longer period of time. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:12, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Might I also reccomend having your students sign up for accounts to avoid blocks of IP address. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:55, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks - I'm concerned to hear that spammers are infiltrating our URL and I'll let the school's IT technician know about it. Meanwhile, students will have to sign up at home before joining the wikibooks as wikipedia limits sign ups from the same URL to six per day. {Davidjohncock}

The blocking of User:Hotflick[edit]

Hi Chris! Firstly, thank you for your speedy response to my report. I would appreciate some advice here. I've only been around a few weeks, and I've not progressed beyond vandalism reversion and typo correction. Was WP:AIV the correct place to report this? I thought about reporting it as a conflict of interest, but the guy seemed to be on a roll. Oh, and should his edits (if there are any left) be reverted? Philip Trueman 17:44, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

A, i already reverted them. B, that was probably on ok palce to report them, they were on a roll. There are a couple of things that should have been done though. They should have ben warned with one of the series of spam templates ((spam1)), ((spam2)), ((spam3)) or ((spam4)) (which i did warn them with and they did not stop). Also, there username could violate WP:USERNAME which could be reported to WP:RFCN. I also posted a message about it at the administrators notice board WP:ANI to see what other admin think. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:51, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Poorly referenced articles[edit]

Hello,

The poverty article included some awful references (blockquote inside a reference?) that I have since cleaned up. However I also notice that many "references" are simply links to other wiki pages. I know this is not correct, but I don't see a good template message to use for this situation in the Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup article. Ideas? /ClintonKu 15:23, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Leave a note on the talk page regarding it. Remove the refs to other wikipedia articles (make sure to reference this in the edit summary or it may accidently getreverted). Finally, being the article will no longer have references (And did not have proper references) add the ((Unreferenced)) tag to the top! Hope this help. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:27, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, but I don't really want to edit the page myself, because it needs so much work. I just wanted to let other users know about the bad links. I'll update its talk page too. Thanks again. /ClintonKu 15:40, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Pot calling the kettle black at ANI[edit]

You may be interested in this. One of the supporting links I reference in my post there relates to you and links to your talk archive. Keesiewonder talk 16:57, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I am confused as to what you are requesting at WP:ANI. If the user has recently violated a wikipedia policy, feel free to let me know and directly show me the diffs. (I have a slower computer and WP:ANI tends to crash my browser occasionally). -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:06, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry to be cryptic. Headphonos started an ANI about Ensyc after a failed AIV he posted against Ensyc. My sense is that rather than Ensyc being the vandal, Headphonos is the subtle vandal for the various reasons/links I listed at the ANI. So, my putting info in Headphonos' ANI post is like a reverse-ANI. The simple approach for admins noticing this ANI thread may be to close the ANI with whatever the appropriate response is regarding Ensyc. A more complicated approach may be to look at Headphonos' history (both what I have posted and what you may know from your own experience in other arenas such as aviation related topics) and issue some response to Headphonos. The edits and diffs I post in the ANI should give you what you need from my perspective. I could post them again here if that would be easier on your computer. I posted to your talk since I link to your talk page in my ANI material. Plus, another interested party suggested I feel welcome giving you a heads-up like I gave them. Let me know if I'm still not making sense. Keesiewonder talk 17:20, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh no, it make sense. I understand now, i was just a little confused before. I dont know, I agree he can be disruptive and, in the future if you give me examples of his disruption I will be glad to warn/block him if appropriate. Some of his edits are good faith and valuable edits and others seems like he may still have a bad case of WP:OWN and an inability to remain WP:CIVIL. Until I see concrete recent examples of such actions, I cant do a whole lot. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:25, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
How do you feel about repetitive removal of well placed tags by other editors, without any change to the article? That is probably the most frequent, blatant, breach of policy IMO. If your definition of "recent" includes edits in the last 24 hours, there are several tag removals in his user contribution history. Keesiewonder talk 17:29, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I will re-peruse for this. I did run into this user doing it before, removing the tags when the issues had not been resolved. I had forgotten about this abuse. I will take another look at User:Headphonos. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:30, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

i.e. this "policy" from Wikipedia-Types of Vandalism focusing on sentences two and three ...
Improper use of dispute tags
Dispute tags are an important way for people to show that there are problems with the article. Do not remove them unless you are sure that all stated reasons for the dispute are settled. As a general rule, do not remove other people's dispute tags twice during a 24 hour period. Do not place dispute tags improperly, as in when there is no dispute, and the reason for placing the dispute tag is because a suggested edit has failed to meet consensus. Instead, follow WP:CON and accept that some edits will not meet consensus. Please note that placing or removal of dispute tags does not count as simple vandalism, and therefore the reverting of such edits is not exempt from the three-revert rule. Keesiewonder talk 17:35, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Will post some diffs here to help you ... please note that I'm listing each article in which I've seen this once, but it has happened many times per article. My Review[edit]

Here is what I see. In regards to the article on Bully Kutta. There are 2 links provided which are disputed as references. The one] is an pretty godo source i would trust. the other has no content and should not be listed as a reference. This oculd go either way based on the reference provided. I would tend to accept them and not challenge the valditiy of the references however. However, there is one section that appears to be originial research without the information in the article corresponding to the source. I tagged that with a ((Unreferenced)) tag. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:39, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your perspective. Personally, I would not call www.molosserdogs.com a good, trustworthy source. As best I can tell, it is a special interest forum seeking funds to keep itself up and running. Anyone can set up a site like this and there are thousands on the internet. IMO, user forums are not reliable references - and in most cases where this site is used, it is the only reference, which makes it particularly suspicious. The test for me is that the content presented for the obscure, rare breeds highlighted above is that it is not found anywhere else. But ... if you consider this particular site a good resource, you've done your due diligence on this for the day. Thank you! We can politely disagree. :-)--Keesiewonder talk 17:49, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I respect your opinion, and honestly, I am still reseraching the issue. I took a prelim look, and preliminarily it appears as though it may house some valid information. Is it the best source available, i will agree it is not. However, i do believe that the dog may be encylopedic. I am still looking around for some other sources, see what information is out there. (i dont know alot about dogs, actually my girlfriend and i are kind of at odds over the dog thing because I am a cat person myself). Im still looking into it though, and trying to expand the article. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:52, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes, that is true. But, do you see any real, reliable, third-party, unbiased reference material listed on that page? I don't want to hear about any dog vs. cat arguments between you and your lady friend over this! Hope you have a great day! :-) Keesiewonder talk 17:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Just to let you know. I changed my mind about that source after researching the website. If you look at the talk page of the disputed article, I gave some reasoning behind it. Thanks again for being so civil. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:20, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Advice[edit]

Hi. Perhaps you can give me guidance on this. At West Highland White Terrier, I am currently trying to protect the article in its consensually applied state, however I have an anonymous IP user who is making sweeping edits (removals not additions), and will not enter into discussion at the article talk page, nor leave an edit summary explaining why he/she has done this?

I know that there is a "three reverts and out" rule in Wikipedia, and I am afraid I will be reaching this point unless I call it vandalism. I actually don't think it is, but I cannot get a response of any kind from the person.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks Refsworldlee(chew-fat)(eds) 19:05, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

I will look into it. give me 5 mins or so! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:06, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I warned them. If they remove it again without explanation, I will consider it vandalism after a warning and temporarily block them. Hope this helps. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:08, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Different IP 71.104.226.219 has now repeated the same three edits - I am inclined to agree about vandalism now, also possible sockpuppetry. Have reverted, and posted stage 1 warning on talk page of new IP. Refsworldlee(chew-fat)(eds) 23:07, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Another piece of advice needed, which WP:ADS does not clear up for me.
Should we tag user talk pages as advertisements, or should it just be articles in the more common style? I have stumbled upon User talk:Ramanbasu while fighting linkspam, and his talk page is written like an advertisement, for something called 'track-issue', including an external link to the product (and since 31 July 2006 as well!). Don't want to tag for speedy delete, as my comment about his/her linkspamming needs to stay.
Sorry to keep on, but it's hard to find second opinions from sensible people sometimes!
Please advise at your leisure, no hurry. Refsworldlee(chew-fat)(eds) 12:00, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Just to let you know, I am looking into it. I will be a bit busy but I should have all the answers by end of the day! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 13:39, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

i know u keep saying you want to ban me, but i dont understand cos I just want to no what happened to it cos ur not answeting my question so im askin you why what happen and r u gonna ban me for just askin?

I wont block you for asking, no. I already told you. the article has been deleted. I have reviewd the deleted revision and it does not meet wikipedias notability requirements. You have now been notified of this and if you re-create the deleted article, and it does not meet those requirements, you will probably get a short block for being disruptive. I have answered the question several times, the article was deleted. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:26, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Vandal[edit]

Hi. It seems someone wants to be blocked Special:Contributions/151.199.192.141. Regards, Mairene 14:30, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

DONE. Thanks for bringing that to my intention. In the future though, WP:AIV is a more appropriate venue to handle such cases! Thanks -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:33, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Help Needed (part 2)[edit]

Help Needed Not sure if this is right, but I need help.. you recently deleted a page about a student named Brandon Breedwell. I need the page to remain up. Please check the talk page of it for more information. Thanks. AquaStreak 01:59, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I am sorry but you failing a class does not meet wikipedias notability criteria. You will need a much better argument based on wikipedia policy for the article to be re-instated. However, if you feel that this deletion was improperly done you are welcome to submit it for Deletion Review. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 02:32, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok well then, what can I do to bring it back? Its very important, and the Darter Company (technology devision at my school) lady is in our class today. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AquaStreak (talkcontribs)

You cannot bring it back. That is not what wikipedia is for. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:09, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Please listen[edit]

I really don't get it. Special:Contributions/125.164.161.204 / Special:Contributions/125.164.161.33 are doing several things wrong. For one, they're mostly removing content from certain articles, placing a category that doesn't exist yet over one that does, and adding wierd categories like "domestic animals" and "Dragon Ball villains" that don't even exist. In all seriousness, I suggest a soft block for each one (including the ones that are likely from the same block) because most of the edits were redlinks that I specifically told them not to do, and yet, they deliberately did it as following each other's examples. THEY DID MORE HARM THAN GOOD. It was really annoying reverting almost everyhing hey did using popups. Let this be a way of teaching them a lesson. Power level (Dragon Ball) 17:43, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

We don't block to teach lessons. We block to prevent damage. They are not currently editing those articles, ergo no block is warrented at this time.--Isotope23 17:49, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
The wikipedia blocking policy specifically states, "Blocking is how administrators prevent a user account or IP address/range from editing Wikipedia. Blocks are used to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia and should not be used as a punitive measure". If I block that IP address, how do I know that the next person who comes along, 10 hours after the last edit, is the same person? I dont. I could block that IP, and an interested individual tries to edit an article he sees a mistake in, and gives up. The evidence you provided shows that is more than likley a shared or dynamic IP address. Blocking it would be pointless at this point and would teach nobody a lesson. If you warn them approprialty when it happens and report it to WP:AIV, that is the best option in this situation. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:55, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I hear ya.[edit]

Yeah; I archive every 30 headers, ever since becoming an admin I have had a heavy load of messages. I don't mind though, the earlier situation was dealt with (the IP personal info poster). I blocked him (soft) for 6 months, thank you for your help. ~ Arjun 18:44, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Your question on WT:RFA[edit]

I think the answer is: a Wikipedian was nominated for adminship in December by a non-admin, it failed. They were nommed by an admin < two months later and they passed! Or am I reading between the lines a bit too much? I'm sure there have been many admins successfully nommed by non-admins. :) Bubba hotep 20:56, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree. Maybye my question was malformed. The numbers i was looking for is how much more likley is promotion, if nommed by an current admin as opposed to not. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:58, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, and I think I just answered that, didn't I? Much more likely. :P Bubba hotep 21:00, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I did not get the reference as first. I get it now. (DUHHHHH). It actually had nothing to do with that (really). I recently started to notice a patern that the quality of the nom was almost as important as the answers to the question. still cant believe I missed the reference in the first pose. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Lolski. Have another cup of coffee, Chris. :D Bubba hotep 21:09, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
I need it! Its been one of those weeks where you are always 2 steps behind (in real life. But on the plus side, ive been keeping up with wikipedia!). -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:11, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I absolve you of all blame for the lack of "getting the reference" - because you the prospective admin in question were was, in fact, nommed in November, not December as originally stated. Oops. Then again, should the question be "How many candidates passed after the first !vote being an oppose (other than the nom/co-nom's support)? That would be interesting to test the theory of SNOW! Bubba hotep 21:36, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

←I agree, that would be an interesting statistic. ANd then again, a statistic of, "the number of rfas which passed with an 20 line Oppose from CRZ as the forst !vote" would also be interesting. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:37, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Holy crap! I am sooo sorry man. I saw it, it needed to be deleted. I will go ahead and do that. thank you again for your patience. I ended up with 900 things coming at me from all sides (not an excuse, I know). -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:27, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
In that situation a ((db-g11)) would probably have been appropriate and gotten it deleted much quicker. It was spam and qwualified for speedy deletion. If that failed, it should have been taken to WP:MFD. Nevertheless, I deleted the page as spam. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:29, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Could you please post the same on the other editors talk pages.--Lucy-marie 23:40, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your note on my user page discussion. I do not think I need to 'calm down a little bit'; however, if you want to know more about the background I would refer you to the discussion page of BNP at Talk:British National Party#Intro. I would also refer you to User:Lucy-marie's discussion page, but she has just archived it. Emeraude 23:51, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Found it. She has not linked it , but it is at User talk:Lucy-marie/Archive 3. I would question why someone should hide a talk page when an examination is going on, especially as the page is hardly 'full'. Emeraude 21:34, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Neutral third party[edit]

Yes please! This really isn't going to get solved otherwise. One Night In Hackney 23:46, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

It's basically a dispute that I'm in the thick of as well, centred around this page. I was thinking about going for RFC, but what I'll probably do is prepare a sub-page in my user space outlining all the problems complete with diffs and you can look it over and see if it can be sorted out without it getting too formal, and if it can't be sorted out I've still got the information I need to take it further. Sound reasonable? One Night In Hackney 23:51, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Sounds great!. I will do a little research myself. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 23:57, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
See the page here. If you want to use the (as yet uncreated) talk page for it that would probably be best. Thanks. One Night In Hackney 02:42, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
I will look over it. I will probably do the most of the work tomorow! Thanks again. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 02:43, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Countries you've visited[edit]

I just noticed the flags on your user page under the heading "Countries I have been in". I ought to point out that if you're showing the flags of England and Scotland, you shouldn't be showing the UK flag. Pedantry perhaps, but to put it in a US context, it would be like me showing, under 'countries' I've visited, the Stars and Stripes and then the flags of Virginia, California and Hawaii (which of course has a UK flag at the top). Either show the components or the whole. Does it matter? Probably not. Emeraude 00:06, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! I will fix it tomorow! Im not at my usualy computer, but a laptop that is not half as conveneient! Thanks again. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 00:07, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Only if you really want to. As I said, it is probably pedantry gone wild on my part and I'm not sure it matters, but I hope you enjoyed your time in England and Scotland. Shame you didn't get to Wales though. Emeraude 21:25, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

My Response.[edit]

I replied on my talk page, so if you want, you can keep the discussion centered by replying there.

I saw your message on Bubba Hotep's talk page, as I noticed my user page linked to there. I occasionally Google my username, only out of curiosity. You and I aren't the only ones with outisders hating us: I believe RyanPostlethwaite had people hate him as well. Acalamari 20:24, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
I kind of look at it as a good thing! I am making enough of an impression that people have a problem with me. I personally dont have a problem with it! (It actually makes me feel that my effors on wikipedia do not go unnotices (which i am sure all of us feel from time to time)). The same goes for userpage vandalism. I feel that when my userpage gets vandalized, it means i am doing a good job! There are also many paeople watching my page (as well as yours) and when those vandal do strike, there is an army ready to strike them down! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:26, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Rock music Wikiproject invitation[edit]

Hello WikiProject Metal member.
WikiProject Metal music is important in expanding encyclopedic coverage of the metal. It brings attention to the lesser-known bands, and significantly improves the quality of the famous ones. Five Featured articles and two formers is proof of that.
This is the stuff I wish to achieve with the somewhat recently resurrected WikiProject Rock music. I hope to also attract attention to rock music articles of all sorts, and hopefully change some to GA or FA status. I invite you to come join us, and embrace the links between metal and rock music in general.
Rock on.

Afd to close/relist[edit]

The Diane Solomon Afd has been open for two weeks now, I think it hasn't been listed on the log page for some reason. Thanks. One Night In Hackney 08:34, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Done, closed as Keep -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 13:09, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. Can you take a look at ASCII comic for me please? Grue added the Nerd Boy information to this article.[25]. Nerd Boy was originally deleted after this Afd discussion. Grue has since recreated Nerd Boy as a redirect, which seems to be circumventing the process to me. The Nerd Boy information in the ASCII comic article is bigger than the article was previously. I did remove the information from the ASCII article and list the redirect for speedy deletion, but Grue has reverted my changes, and I don't want to start reverting an administrator, but it doesn't seem quite right to me. Thanks. One Night In Hackney 17:05, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Before I get too far into this. Have you expressed your concernts to the administrator in question? They often make mistakes, may think it was closed as redirect instead of delete or have rationalization behind there decision. If you have contacted them and you still feel there is an issu, I would be much more comfterable getting involved. Hope this helps! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:09, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
If it was an independent administrator I wouldn't even have bothered you, but if you look at the Afd you'll see Grue was heavily involved in the deletion discussion. Bogdangiusca has just redirected the page to ASCII art anyway, so I don't think there's that much of a problem now, as that article is pretty comprehensive. One Night In Hackney 17:14, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
That said Grue has just reverted it back... One Night In Hackney 17:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I will investigate a little further. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

←It appears as though the other party involved is adminsitrator User:Bogdangiusca, who claims to be a rouge admin. It looks like the redirect is staying. I do not see much of a reason to get too involved here. I have posted a comment on the redirects talk page expressing my agreement with the redirect etc etc. Hope this helps. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:21, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I just thought it best an uninvolved third party reviewed the situation, so I'm happy now. One Night In Hackney 17:26, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Just so you know, the ascii comment article is now up for afd. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:27, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

HAHAHAHAHHAH, um yea, no. This bot needs to be fixed. (last I checked, remocing vandalism from my own page is not vandalism). -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:49, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Chris, technically your user page is still part of editable space and therefore does not actually belong to you. So, technically, you are a vandal. I suggest a punitive block on yourself of a gazillion seconds. :D Bubba hotep 20:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Guilty as charged. Should I filed a request for check user to prove, I, as a sock of myself, vandalized my own page, then re-vandalized it by removing the vandalisation replaced by the bot? Well, that made my head hurt, whatever the hell I just said. Now, let me enter polite admin mode. "Bubba, thank you for your recent request that I block myself for a gazillaion seconds. I however will have to deny this request. The actions that I took were well within wikipedias policies. Thank you again for your concern with the well being of wikipedia and if you have any concerns regarding this, please feel free to contact me on my tlak page. Thanks again!" (as i said, polite admin mode) :) -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:18, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Hmm, yes you would be right not to block yourself as it is against policy to block an editor with whom you are actively engaged in a content dispute with, i.e. yourself. I suggest taking yourself to WP:AN/I and starting, responding to, countermanding, and finishing a request for comment on yourself. Then ask for a third opinion. :) Bubba hotep 20:30, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
um, i will get RIGHT on that, (ok, maybye not)! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:32, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I wonder, can an admin Wheel war with themselves? HAHAHA, that would be bizarre! I will randomly engage in wheel warring behavior with myself. lol. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:40, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Just as long as you're not uncivil to yourself, and don't revert yourself more than three times! And while you're doing all that, it'd probably be advisable to stay away from articles relating to dog breeds (or rat breeds, for that matter). Akradecki 20:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I think we need to look at the big picture here. Obviously, there's a major COI for Chris to be editing User:Chrislk02. EVula // talk // // 20:46, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Is it a username problem, should I bring myself up for a WP:RFCN? I guess it poses the bigger problem, are we all in WP:COI by editing under usernames? I think I should get a list of all users with usernames and request that they be blocked for WP:COI. Whos in? -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
You make an excellent point, EVula. Not to mention the fact that he is adding unsourced userboxes about his lifestyle, also contravening autobiographical guidelines in the process. Oh, deary me, Chris. One big can of worms, here. Good job VoABot brought it to our attention so soon. Bubba hotep 20:50, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh the irony. the ease at which stuff gets added and the dificulty at which it gets taken away. I.E., the vandalism with replaced my page with (FAG), and the anti vandalism bot replacing it. I wonder if the antivandal bot knows something about me that I dont? I did get drunk this weekend but i think i would remeber if i hooked up with an antivandal bot. strange...-- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:53, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Me thinks Chrislk doth protest too much. Sorry, just wanted to slip that in somewhere! Bubba hotep 21:13, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

hahahahaha, I guess I am just a problem editor. I probably need a cooldown block, and should file a request for arbitration against myself for disruptive editing, POV pushing, wheel warring with myself, block evasion, wiki stalking myself and edit warring couple with a WP:COI per evula for my username and my autobio violations per Bubba. Thanks for the welcome[edit]

Greetings and thanks for the welcome on my talk page. I'm actually a regular on a non-wikipedia wiki, but new to the wikipedia world. I post with my RealName on my other wiki, but since my Wikipedia interest is non-work related, I made a sockpuppet (Shhh!). I have what I consider good reason though - I wouldn't want people thinking my wiki posts relect some kind of professional opinion. I'm learning all sorts of new wikipedia-rules though, so I will be sure to return with questions as I need them. (And I'm stealing the ((userpage)) template code to put on my own homepage, because it's a good idea.) Cheers, Doodlemuck 23:06, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Jeopardy! in popular culture[edit]

I don't believe there was consensus for the deletion of this page. There were 4 delete votes and 3 keep votes. Robert K S 01:06, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

GIve me an hour, I am on the phone and then i will recheck and explain my decision or retract it! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 01:11, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
I promise this is important to me. It will be tommorow morning before I look at it though! Thanks again -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 01:44, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Take your time. You might also consider that the delete votes came from users who have not edited the Jeopardy! article and have not be involved in the spinning-off of some of its material onto other pages, whereas the keep votes came from editors who have been involved with the discussions and decision-making on the Category:Jeopardy! family of articles. Robert K S 06:29, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
First off, your claims that the keep votes are from people involved in the article greatly weakn your argument for overturning this. Please remeber that an afd is not a vote, and I did not view this particular one as a vote. I had some dificulty closing it but after reviewing each sides arguments and taking all things into account, I felt the consensus was to delete. Here is why.
  1. Mango juice has a pretty good nom coupled with a Delete as well as counters arguments well in policy. To me, this discounts a keep !vote.
  2. You, by your own admission, state that the keep votes have a Conflict of Interest in this issue due to there involvement in the Jeopardy! article, and the categories associated with it. This also discounts the !keep votes.
  3. Reywas' Strong Keep does not have a good policy based argument behind it so, I see it as a Keep. As well, Andy SaundersStrong keep, but clean up does not address the issues originiall posed by the nominator as well as the opposers.
  4. If i were counting it as a vote, there are 5 Deletes including the nom. 3 Keeps and 2 Merges. Looking at these numbers, it may appears as if there is no consensus however, I saw that the majority of wikipedia editors that have no apparent conflict of interest were either for Delete or Merge as were mostly based in policy and other concerns often expressed in relation to trivia sections. The Keep arguements did not address the concerns that it was an indiscriminate and unsourced collection yet based there argument on the fact that the information in this article was forked off to prevent unwiedly growth in the Jeopardy! article, and did not address any of the concerns related to the actual content. It is for all of these reasons that I stand by my orignial delete decision. If you still have an issue with this, please feel free to take it to Deletion Review. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 13:49, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
A user's having edited an article does not constitute a conflict of interest when the user contributes to a deletion discussion. Conversely, the users who called for the deletion of the article were unfamiliar with the article's history and the problems involved in trying to keep the Jeopardy! article down to size. To me (and to the others who said keep) the material was valuable, but was rightly spun off of the main article for size reasons. I disagree with and am disappointed by your decision. I guess it's one of those little things where it's nice to see the system work for the first time. Akradecki 02:06, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I did notice that. That was pretty cool! I relaly like working in this project. I guess the irony is i am in a flight class right now (should be paying attention to airspace and stuf flike that but cant drag myself away from wikipedia)-- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 02:08, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Blocking the vandal[edit]

I reported them already for vandalizing Led Zeppelin which is why they decided to vandalize me, just don't get too crazy with the blocks :) . Darthgriz98 18:51, 21 February 2007 (UTC) There was nothing crasy about it at all. They had been approprialy warned and continued to vandalize after the final warning. Perfect example of who to block! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:05, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I know I'm just saying. These vandals need to come up with more creative things to say than you suck or you're gay ha ha. Darthgriz98 20:17, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
I, in all honesty, appreciated a creative vandal. I enjoy getting a laugh from them. However, boring vandals suck. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:29, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

How to handle mirror sites?[edit]

Chris, I need advice. I came across 3 edits (SR-71 Blackbird here, F-117 Nighthawk here, and C-130 Hercules here) where a new editor, User:Sammy9990 added External links to his personal website which is essentially material taken directly from Wikipedia. I've reverted these, but haven't yet left a note for the editor. I vaguely recall something about how mirrors are supposed to be registered and the GFDL licensing must be included when material is used (I can't find anything like this on his site, [26], other than a statement that he has "permission"). I'm way behind on my admin coaching reading list (too busy actually editing!), so while I'm sure there's something in there I should know, I thought maybe you could advise on the best course on this? Akradecki 21:41, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I dont know alot about it and I am on my way out for the day. I do know there is a wikipedia article on mirrors that is located here Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks. I will look at it in detail later! Good luck and thanks! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 22:06, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Usernames[edit]

Before I go to WP:RFCN can you think as to why these were blocked for username violations?

Cheers RyanPostlethwaiteSee the mess I've created or let's have banter 16:40, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

    • I could see why asdf123asdf nmight have been. Is there a famous person names Bobgalbraith? That is the only reason I can think the first might be. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:58, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
I get Bob Galbraith to bea photographer to the associated press (AP) news agency, it that famous enough for a username block?? Regarding Asdf123asdf, do you think its because its random? RyanPostlethwaiteSee the mess I've created or let's have banter 17:04, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
How recent are the blocks? I dont know about bob galbreath, that sounds like a good one for WP:RFCN. Asdf123asdf is probablt good blocked(in my opnion). -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:05, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

WP:AIV[edit]

Hi. I reported User:67.113.50.2 to AIV as a test case for soft blocks. It's arguable if the IP has contributed anything to Wikipedia. It's probably a high school library computer, and the vandalism from it has been persistent. Xiner (talk, email) 18:26, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Please read WP:BLOCK for our blocking policy. The user had not edited recnetly and only had 1 edit today. Blcoks will not be punitive. Hope this helps! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:32, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm not arguing for a punitive block. The user's history is just an example of why I don't think there'd be much collateral damager if a block is placed on the IP, and there's been more than one edit. Xiner (talk, email) 17:59, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Gotcha. Makes sense. If they vandalize again, let me know and I will block. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

How not to get unblocked?[edit]

10/10 for effort. Are you any further along looking through the (lengthy) BNP dispute? Thanks. One Night In Hackney 22:35, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem. I always have an eye out for vandals. Unfortunately all I can do is de-vandalize, I can't really write an article for my life. Help[edit]

I'm a bit new to categories, and after looking through the help info I'm still not sure of the best way to proceed. I was thinking about creating a category for winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards, it would probably be one all encompassing category rather than seperate categories for each award, but I can do it the other way if you think it's better? There is currently a Category:Laureus World Sports Awards, which has five subpages. So would I create a new category (tentatively called Laureus World Sports Awards winners) as part of the existing category? If so, how do I create it as a sub-category? Thanks. One Night In Hackney 14:30, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Worked great thanks. In the course of adding categories I've come across a problem I can't solve on Kelly Holmes. This edit added more information about medals and championships, but I can't see where all the garbage in the infobox came from, or work out how to get rid of it. Thanks. One Night In Hackney 15:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

WP:AIV reports[edit]

Hey! Thanks for your reports to WP:AIV. However, in the future, please make sure that vandals reported have vandalized PAST the final warning. Most recently. User:165.234.180.57 was reported by you. This user has 1 edit today and 1 warning. They may repeat or they may not. Many admins will imemdiatly remove such cases to be reported later if the vandalism continues. Hope this helps and thanks again. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:19, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

The user in question had a bv less than 24 hours ago. Isnt that considered vandalism past final warning? Corpx 15:26, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
With that large a gap and it being an anon IP, generally not. There generally needs to be clear evidence that it is the same person commiting the act of vandalism and a gap that large, especially if it is a school ip, is generally not a large enough gap. I generally look for vandalism within 30 minutes, sometimes an hour but not 12 hours or so. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:29, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
I have again removed a anon WP:AIV entry that you reported that had not been warned in 2 days. I am not going to notify you again when I do this, but this is just a courtesy letting you know that, if vandals are not approriatly warned, many admin will just remove it from the list. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:07, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I wasnt really sure about the last person so I thought I'd leave it up to the discretion of an admin Corpx 17:08, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Re: Barnstar[edit]

Thanks! I should point out that my AIV reports weren't always quite that precise – as you'll see if you look through my discussion archives, I had a number of complaints a while back. I was never that good at keeping track of what warning level a user had been given, and I was always reporting them at the wrong time. In the end, I modified my anti-vandalism software to keep track of warning levels itself – now I can't report a user unless it's satisfied they've had a final warning. But I think the results are effective. Thanks again – Qxz 16:20, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

We all start a little rough around the edges! However, you have done an excellent job adapting. I love seeing your reprots at WP:AIV because I know they are good! Keep up the excellent work i could see you with the mop someday. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:25, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm, I'm not sure about that. Don't you need to have written featured articles and have experience with things like image licensing (which I don't understand at all), as well as have all the policies and guidelines committed to memory? I know I haven't been here long, but I'm hopeless at writing, nor am I any use at resolving disputes or stuff like that, so... I can't quite see myself in that position. Nice that you think so, though – Qxz 16:29, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

unblocking of 66.93.251.114[edit]

Hey we really appreciate you unblocking us over here, a couple of hardcore gamers that come here have been in a spat with JonHarder over the past couple of months over 1 external link in a article. JonHarder just happens to have a couple admins on his side that he works with to have everything go his way. Thanks for yoru help! 66.93.251.114 04:25, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

This IP has been very abusive in the past and the contribution history does not suggest a shared IP at all. I encourage you to consider restoring the warnings to the talk page for now so that if trouble brews (which would not surprise me), admins and others new to this user will know the history. JonHarder's one of the easiest editors I know of to get along with -- this passing swipe at him should give you some sense of 66.93.251.114. and the extent to which he/she now may or may not be prepared to work civilly.

Amelia Earhart[edit]

Thanks for the offer to look into this dispute. The editor in question is Gwen Gale and the information you need to reference is the extensive discussion page on Talk:Amelia Earhart where in almost every discussion, there is an extensive discourse in which this editor engages. The most recent example is the challenge over whether Amelia Earhart can be considered an aviation "pioneer" which has been inextricably linked to an assessment of her flying abilities. Despite a number of concerns raised over the tenor of the debate as well as refusals to accept any refererenced sources that do not comply with her viewpoint, the editor in question has again reverted the introductory passage. Bzuk 2:48 28 February 2007 (UTC).

I have looked at it and there is no clear cut case of edit warring that i can find in the last 50 edits (Then again, i may be blind and not seeing it). If you could provide some diffs of each version it would be very helpful. Thanks -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:15, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Are you sure that they were indeed added legitimately ? None of them had any edits in their edit history. Travelbird

Is a 50% vandal edit ratio acceptable from a shared IP?[edit]

Hi there Your reasonable point is that blocking an IP with a proportion of good edits would result in a loss of irreplaceable contributions while vandal edits can always be reverted. I suspect you may be right but I want to argue the other side with you.

  • Vandal edits are not always reverted. Hardest to spot are unsourced valid sounding assertions or assertions with references to fake offline hard to verify sources (eg a reference to a non-existent paragrapgh in an out of print book.) Good faith editors wouldn't do this but an editor with a history of vandalism may.
    • This is true, however, with todays recent armies of RC patrollers it is difficult. The first thing i check when I get a Wp:AIV report is the contribs. I view all of them on top and see if they were vandalism and revert them all if necessary. However, some may slip through the cracks. The plus to this is, anybody can look through the edit historyu, find who added it and determine if it was an appropriate addition or not. If it isent, be bold and remove it! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
I strongly disagree with the opinion that valid-sounding nonsense is reliably detected and removed, particularly for articles that deal with complex subjects. As an editor most of my work has been on articles where access to primary sources is limited (because you need to look them up in books) and the number of people interested in the topics is low compared with pop culture. In such cases a tremendous amount of nonsense has accumulated in some articles and has remained there for a long time. Buddhipriya 23:01, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • Agreed
  • Malicious edits with high longevity are destructive to Wikipedia's reputation.
    • I will agree, however forcing IP's to register will not stop the vandalism. They will keep getting throw away accounts and keep on vandalising. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • Agreed
  • Softblocks on shared static IPs restrict anonymous contributors but registration is fast and easy.
    • I personally, especially at new sites, am very adverse to signing up. Especialyl in todays internet world, there are many negative connotations to signing up including eternal spam (which isent here but the stereotype holds over). -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • Requiring a sign-up is a deterrent and I wouldn't advocate it for all IPs just those with a history of vandalism. Wikipedia's sign-up is the least onerous I have ever seen.
  • A block is time-limited so good edits are only lost for a short period.
    • Where do you draw the time limit, 5 minutes, 10 minutes? what is appropriate. If we block too short editors get mad. if we block to long other admin get mad. I personally have no problem with a short term block and very reguuarly block for 24 or 48 hours. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • It has to be longer than the average interval between vandal edits from that IP
  • Wikipedia may have needed an extremely open approach when it was growing from nothing but now it has a huge database of good edits to protect. A single vandal edit can remove the valid contributions of a number of good editors.
    • And a single dedit cna bring it back. And, no matter what happens, in the history all good edits are still presevred and readily available to be reverted to. On the other hand, most vandals type out there stuff and it takes them alot longer to vandalize then it takes us to revert it. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • Agreed
  • Each new good edit has a value and that value is lost when a shared IP block prevents a good contribution. However each vandal edit requires a reversion and each reversion is time lost that otherwise could have been spent fixing a mistake, removing an unsourced assertion etc.
    • There are many editors who devote there time here to RC patrol. I myself started there. I like to write but i also hve no problem cleaning up other peoples messes occaitonally. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • Editing time is finite so each reversion represent the loss of a potential good edit
  • Vandal edits encourage positive contributors to leave, resulting in a loss of future good edits
    • This is true, and a valid point. I kind of view it like fredom of speech and deomcracy. I belive it was benjamin franklin who said, "he who gives up a little lbertry for protection deserves neither" (I am sure i slauightered that quote). -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • From wikiquote: 'Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety'. Editing Wikipedia anonymously is hardly an 'essential liberty'. Franklin may have been thinking about holding suspects without charge or trial for years, torture, assassination and other human rights abuses that Americans would never think of authorizing. Wikipedia's balance between freedom to edit and authority has been an unusual strategy and highly successful up to now, but I really don't know if it is the most pragmatic approach now that the project has reached critical mass with every topic under the sun covered.

3RR[edit]

No it's regarding G8, and I'm well aware of my proximity to the limit. I've tried repeatedly to get lucy-marie to inform all concerned parties (the infobox and template need to be consistent) but she refuses and does her usual trick of claiming consensus based on the fact nobody has replied (because they don't know about the discussion), or in the case of the template based on a three week old pair of posts on the talk page that have since been superceded by various edits to the template, and they don't even refer to the current version. One Night In Hackney 21:04, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

G8 history shows 4 reverts, she's only up to 3 on the template. One Night In Hackney 21:05, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I think hackney wants me blocked. please correct me if i am wrong.--Lucy-marie 21:07, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I have in the past reported hackney for personal attacks and no actionwas taken can have action taken over that if action is to be taken over this.--Lucy-marie 21:08, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Please dont point fingers at other editors. It is about the content, not placing the blame or being the victim. I am looking into this. In the meantime, please remeber, always be cool and civil. Thanks! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:08, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
The EU have been represented at all meetings since 1977, that is a fact. The EU cannot actually join the G8, otherwise they would have. Instead they are represented at every meeting. A previous version of the page didn't make this clear, so it was amended to this version. Does it state the EU are members? No, but it still makes it clear they are represented, which is a fact and can therefore be included. This is the preferred version of several editors, and I as I said earlier the template and article need to be consistent. Lucy-marie has ignored repeated requests for her to inform all concerned parties before performing her "nobody has replied, therefore I have consensus" trick, and has repeatedly refused to do so. It is a change she wishes to make, therefore it isn't unreasonable for her to do so. Instead I get replies like this saying she doesn't have to because it isn't policy. One Night In Hackney 21:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Personal attack[edit]

Or more accurately to protect the page on your preferred version, like you have done before. One Night In Hackney. Is this a personal attack?--Lucy-marie 21:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

That was posted on my talk page after i said i had had the page protected. I find it an attack saying i only protect pages to snub other revisions.

Coukd you please have a look at the G8 template as well for concensus.--Lucy-marie 21:32, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I am pretty sure that the decision that stands on the G8 article will also apply to the G8 template. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:33, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Thank you could you please make that clear on the template talk page.--Lucy-marie 21:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Unequivocal evidence has been produced. One Night In Hackney 21:36, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Where?--Lucy-marie 21:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok evidence of what? I see no unequivocal evidence on that talk page.--Lucy-marie 21:45, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok sorry.--Lucy-marie 21:48, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure which edit your message referred to, please elaborate. One Night In Hackney 21:49, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Guidelines[edit]

Can you tell Lucy-marie they cannot just be ignored please? She seems to think otherwise. One Night In Hackney 21:59, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I am invoking the "common sence" section in my opinon I made common sence edits to my comments.--Lucy-marie 22:08, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Common sense does not generally involve changing a sentence to one that means something else entirely in my opinion, and I would appreciate a clarification from Chrislk02 please. One Night In Hackney 22:57, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Re:G8 disagreement[edit]

Perhaps the following information from OFFICIAL web pages will shed some light on this dispute. All of the information is easily available by following links from the appropriate Wikipedia articles.

The Official site for the 1998 Summit ([32]), under the heading "G8 Structure: an informal club" states that "The G8 is an informal organisation, with no rules or permanent Secretariat staff." (Meaning it has NO members.) From the title page, follow the link to Participating governments: ([33]) and you find a list of countries, and the European Commission.

The Official site for the 2001 Summit ([34]) clearly includes the EU flag at the top of the page. Following the Fact file link to [35] we can read that "Since 1975, the heads of state or government of the major industrial democracies have been meeting annually........ The six countries at the first Summit, held at Rambouillet, France in November 1975, were France, the United States, Britain, Germany, Japan and Italy. They were joined by Canada at the San Juan, Puerto Rico Summit of 1976, and by the European Community at the London Summit of 1977." (my emphasis).

On a related point, Lucy-marie has edited the following two pages (at least) to remove mention of the European Commission under the heading of "Leaders at the Summit": 24th G8 summit and 25th G8 summit. This is blatantly wrong even if the European Commission is not a member, since its leader WAS at the summits in question. Emeraude 22:17, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Can you provide any statment saying the EU has been admitted as a member such as for russia and canada?--Lucy-marie 22:20, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

The G8 itself says it has no members, obviously you missed Emeraude play his trump card. One Night In Hackney 22:22, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Has she removed them since I have warned her (after i got invovled with the dispute)? -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 22:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
No, I wasn't suggesting she had. They were removed earlier in the row on 21 Feb, with no reason given on the relevant discussion pages. I mentioned it merely as an example of how Lucy-marie has conducted this debate. Emeraude 00:15, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: Line of people[edit]

Just to let you know, there is a line of people who will be ready to nominate when the time comes, lol. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 22:30, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I know, they're all on my talk page shoving Barnstars down my throat! Anyway, as I've said elsewhere, I have no particular desire to be an administrator – it would bring me into contact with those parts of the project that I do not appreciate (including the events that are sometimes collectively referred to as "drama", which seem to be an unnecessary but problematic issue right now) – Qxz 22:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
I feel you! There is a userbox somewhere that states, "This user is not an administrator nor desires to become one." You might want to post that on your userpage and your talk page. If you are adverse to the barnstars, there is also a no-barnstar zone sign if you would like to prevent getting barstars. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 22:40, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
