Ray Brooks was axed from the show in 2006; his character Joe Macer departed in "a dramatic exit".[1] Natalie Cassidy (who portrayed Sonia Fowler since 1993) announced her intentions to take a break from the show and a BBC spokesperson said "Natalie is a valued member of the EastEnders cast and we wish her all the very best during her break from the show".[2] Her on-screen partner James Alexandrou (who portrayed Martin Fowler since 1996) subsequently announced his intentions to leave the series, deciding it was "an appropriate time to leave."[3] Cassidy, Alexandrou and their on-screen daughter Jade Sharif (Rebecca Miller) left the series on 2 February 2007. Despite it being specified as a break, Cassidy's exit was made permanent.[4] Naomi Julien (Petra Letang) was axed from the series in January 2007; she made her final appearance on 24 May.[5] The departures of Rob Minter (Stuart Laing) and May Wright (Amanda Drew) were announced on 15 June 2007 and both characters departed on 25 June 2007.[6] Li Chong (Elaine Tan) and Bert Atkinson (Dave Hill) were axed from the series and both characters departed in July 2007.[7] At the conclusion of her character's child abuse storyline, Sophie Thompson was written out of the series and her character Stella Crawford fell to her death in scenes airing on 23 July 2007.[8]
Robert Kazinsky was suspended from the show in January 2007 for two months. His character Sean Slater was written out of the series on 27 March and returned on 28 May.[9][10] Following off-screen health issues, Jim Branning (John Bardon) was written out of the series temporarily. Jim left the series on 6 August 2007 and returned in 2008.[11]
Kika Mirylees joined the cast in April 2007 as Hazel Hobbs, the mother of Garry Hobbs (Ricky Groves).[12] Shirley Carter's (Linda Henry) best friend Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison) was introduced in June 2007 as a guest character. The character proved popular and eventually became a regular character.[13] Show producers introduced a new family in 2007 consisting of parents Masood Ahmed and Zainab Masood (Nitin Ganatra and Nina Wadia) and their two children Shabnam and Tamwar (Zahra Ahmadi and Himesh Patel). Ahmadi and Wadia joined the cast in July and Ganatra and Patel joined the cast in October.[7] In June 2007, the casting of Stephen Lord in the role of Jase Dyer, the estranged father of Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) was announced.[14] The introduction of two new Mitchell family members, sisters Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Janus) and Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons), were announced in April 2007. They were intended to bring "sexy, dramatic excitement" to the series and arrived in July 2007.[15] Bobby Davro was cast in the role of "loveable rogue" Vinnie Monks, a love interest for Shirley Carter, in October 2007.[16] The brother of Max Branning (Jake Wood), Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) was announced to be joining the show's cast in July 2007.[17]
Gillian Wright's character Jean Slater was promoted to the main cast over the course of the year.[7] Original character Harold Legg (Leonard Fenton) was reintroduced for one episode in June 2007. The return of Aunt Sal (Anna Karen) was announced on 13 July 2007, following a three-year absence from the show.[7] Rachel Branning returned to the show, with the role recast to Pooky Quesnel. Following repeated speculation, the character of Steven Beale was announced to be returning, five years following his departure.[18] The role was recast to Aaron Sidwell, who said he felt "so lucky" to be working on the show.[19]

The Brannings watch Max and Stacey on DVD on the day of Stacey and Bradley's wedding; Max says it is just a joke that they were going to play on Bradley and the kiss was not real; Stacey apologises to Bradley so Bradley attacks Max, knocking down the Christmas tree; Bradley leaves. Jack finds Bradley vomiting in the Square gardens and tells him to talk to Stacey to find out the truth. Tanya asks Lauren if it was a joke; Lauren says she does not know and wanted to get revenge on Max for his being horrible but realised it was wrong and threw the DVD away; Tanya assures Lauren that this was not her fault. Stacey apologises to Tanya and says Max loves her and his daughters; Stacey says she started the relationship but it was just a fling; Tanya slaps Stacey and says she never wants to see her again; she says the same to Max. Sean finds Tanya watching the DVD and turns it off; Sean tells Tanya that Stacey feels terrible and never meant for anyone to get hurt; Tanya breaks down but then kisses Sean; he stops her and she sends him away. Jack takes Bradley to the Vic and then finds Max; they fight but Jack tells him to speak to Bradley; Bradley tells Max to get away from him but ends up falling in the scuffle; Bradley then announces that Stacey is a "slut". Outside, Bradley punches Max and goes home but Max follows. Tanya thinks about taking an overdose but Abi catches her and she just says she has a headache; Tanya tells Abi and Lauren to pack a bag as they are going to leave. Max tells Bradley that his fling with Stacey was over before the wedding, that it only happened when Bradley and Stacey had broken up and what was seen on the DVD was a "messy goodbye"; Max tells Bradley to give Stacey a chance. Max goes home and sees Lauren and Abi with their bags; he goes upstairs to Tanya, who says she is leaving with the children; there is a struggle as Max tries to grab her bag from her and she falls down the stairs; the girls scream as Tanya's head is bleeding.
