The Gift is an upcoming Australian-American psychological horror/thriller film written, produced, and directed by Joel Edgerton in his directorial debut. The film stars Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, and Edgerton and is set to be released domestically by STX Entertainment on August 7, 2015.
Simon and Robyn are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance of Simon’s from high school sends their world into a tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo at first, but after a series of uninvited encounters and mysterious gifts prove troubling, a terrible secret from their past is uncovered. As Robyn learns the truth about what happened between Simon and Gordo, she begins questioning how well she really knows her husband.[2][3][4][5]
The project was first announced in August 2012, that Joel Edgerton had written a psychological thriller script titled Weirdo, with which Edgerton would also be making his directing debut.[9]
On September 9, 2013, talking with the Screen International, Edgerton revealed that he would be starring in the film for a supporting role and he would also be producing the film along with Rebecca Yeldham through Blue-Tongue Films.[7] Rebecca Hall signed on to star in the thriller on November 3, 2014.[6] It was also confirmed that Jason Blum would also produce the film through his Blumhouse Productions banner.[6] Jason Bateman was set on January 13, 2015 to star in the film as Hall's character's husband.[3]
Principal photography on the film began on January 19, 2015,[10] and ended on February 23, 2015.[11]
On January 20, 2015, STX Entertainment had bought the United States distribution rights to the film.[12] STX retitled the film The Gift.[13] The film is Edgerton’s fourth feature screenplay to be filmed, after The Square (2008), Felony (2013) and The Rover (2014).[14][15][16]
STX Entertainment set The Gift for domestic release on July 31, 2015.[17] It was later moved to August 7, 2015.[18]
The first trailer for The Gift was released on April 1, 2015.[19] It premiered on Twitter's live video streaming app Periscope, making STX Entertainment the first advertiser to work with Twitter on a campaign incorporating Periscope[20] and it was attached to all film screenings of The Age of Adaline.
