Chawinga was born on 20 September 1998, in Rumphi district, Northern Region, Malawi. She is the youngest of five children. She is a Tumbuka by tribe and her name Temwa means "love" in Tumbuka language.[2] Her older sister, Tabitha Chawinga, is also a professional footballer.[3]
Chawinga signed with Kvarnsvedens IK in 2017.[4]
In 2020, Chawinga signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year at Wuhan Jianghan University F.C.. In 2023, she scored a total of 51 goals for the club across all competitions.[5]
On January 3, 2024, Chawinga signed a two-year contract with the Kansas City Current.[4] She scored her first goal for the Current in a 4–2 win over Angel City FC on March 30, becoming the first Malawian goalscorer in NWSL history.[6] A week after scoring in a 1–1 draw away at NJ/NY Gotham FC, she contributed a brace in a 5–2 home win against Bay FC.[7][8] In the 77th and 80th minutes of the home game against Houston Dash, Chawinga scored, creating the NWSL's longest unbeaten streak at 17 games. She set the record for most goals by a KC Current player in regular season, with 11, achieving it in only 15 games, and became golden boot leader for the 2024 NWSL season.[9]
