George Washington (Ceracchi)[edit]

Marble bust of George Washington

Created by Zeete (talk). Self nominated at 19:49, 12 March 2015 (UTC).

  • Improved to GA. 2435 characters long. Hook is interesting, almost comical, sourced and cited. QPQ has been done. Image is of fair use and it is used in the info box and is clear to see.  — ₳aron 09:23, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Fair use is not allowed for DYK images, though it is with a specific license for the article itself. I just took a look, and although the image is on Commons, it has been nominated for deletion there as not being public domain. The nomination should be placed on hold until the issue surrounding the image is settled. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:14, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Replaced image, I think it is ok now. Please check. Thanks, Zeete (talk) 20:14, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Image is now acceptable. Article checks out. GTG. Jack1956 (talk) 08:26, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Even though GW explicitly informed Ceracchi that he would not accept it as a present, the bust remained in the presidential mansion until the spring of 1795, when GW had it returned after receiving a bill for $1,500 for it from the sculptor.
In other words, GW wouldn't accept it as a gift (he set very high standards for the presidency -- he's the reason the president is not addressed as "Your Excllency" or "Your Highness", but rather "Mr. President" i.e. a first among equals, and that the president doesn't live in a palace but rather in the President's "House") and later, he didn't want to buy it either. "refused to pay for a gift" doesn't make any sense. Here's a thought:
ALT1 ... that George Washington refused to accept a marble bust of himself (pictured) as a gift, and wouldn't pay $1,500 for it either?

  • Great hook, @EEng:! ALT1 is verified and cited inline. The wording in the hook and article corroborates the source. No close paraphrasing seen. All other criteria checked per User:Calvin999's review. ALT1 good to go. Yoninah (talk) 09:33, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Yoninah's encouragement is the main reason I'm the hooker I am today. EEng (talk) 12:42, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
