Sleeping with Other People is a 2015 American romantic comedy film directed and written by Leslye Headland. The film stars Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie, Natasha Lyonne, Amanda Peet, and Adam Scott. Premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2015, the film was released theatrically on September 11, 2015, by IFC Films.
A good-natured womanizer Jake (Jason Sudeikis) and a serial cheater Lainey (Alison Brie) form a platonic relationship that helps reform them in ways, while a mutual attraction sets in.
The principal photography of the film began on June 26, 2014 in New York City near the area of Essex and Stanton Streets.[3] On July 2, they were filming a wedding scene with Sudeikis and Brie.[4] On July 8, both actors were filming some arguing scenes for the film around Central Park.[5]
In October 2014, Andrew Feltenstein and John Nau were hired to compose the music for the film.[6]
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2015.[7] On February 6, 2015, IFC Films had acquired distribution rights to the film.[8] The film premiered at the Sarasota Film Festival on April 17, 2015.[9] Then went on to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 21, 2015.[10] and then the Montclair Film Festival on May 8, 2015.[11] The Seattle International Film Festival on June 5, 2015 and the Provincetown Film Festival on June 17, 2015.[12][13] The film had its European premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 18, 2015.[14]
The film was released in the United States on September 11, 2015, in a limited release by IFC Films.[15]
Sleeping with Other People has received mixed to positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 58% approval rating, based on 65 reviews, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Sleeping with Other People has likable leads and flashes of inspiration, but seems unwilling or unable to surround them with the truly subversive rom-com they deserve".[16] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 65 out of 100, based on 19 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[17]
Indiewire gave the film a positive review, describing it as "a refreshingly funny and romantic feature that is more than worth falling in love with (again and again)".[18]
