A rocket drone is a new[when?][citation needed] class of weaponry that combines the characteristics of both rockets (missiles) and drones. It is capable of performing tasks typical of both categories of weapons due to its unique[citation needed] design and innovative[citation needed] technical specifications. The world's first[citation needed] successful launch of a rocket drone named "Palianytsia" was carried out by Ukrainian defense forces on August 24, 2024, during the Russian invasion, on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine's independence.

History of development and first deployment

[edit]

The development of rocket drones began in response to the growing needs of modern armed forces for high-tech, maneuverable, and effective weaponry.[citation needed] On August 24, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the successful combat deployment of the first rocket drone "Palianytsia" during the celebration of Ukraine's 33rd Independence Day. In his speech, he noted that "Palianytsia" was successfully used against an enemy military target, demonstrating its effectiveness in modern combat conditions.[1][2]

Development prospects

[edit]

The deployment of the "Palianytsia" rocket drone marks a significant step in the evolution of Ukrainian defense technology. According to the Minister of Strategic Industries, Oleksandr Kamyshin, the number of rocket drones is expected to increase, much like the number of long-range strike drones, which will enable effective responses to modern threats and challenges.[3]
