Rami Kashou is a Palestinian fashion designer and a finalist in season 4 of the reality show Project Runway. He returned to the franchise in the first season of Project Runway: All Stars (2012), placing 8th, and placed 4 Project Runway's 20th season, which was produced following an All Stars format. He describes his aesthetic as timeless,[1] romantic, and inspired by freedom.[2]
Kashou was born May 11, 1976, in Jerusalem, and raised in the nearby city of Ramallah.[3] His father was a businessman, and his mother supported his passion of design and brought him to the local seamstress.[4] Kashou describes his inspiration as: "The dreams to become a designer came from the lack of childhood space, growing up among jeeps, soldiers, intimidation, violence and occupation. I think the subconscious choice of creativity and design kind of happened as a way of coping with a difficult reality which I lived and endured."[4]
In 1996,[5] shortly after graduating high school, Kashou moved to the United States and settled in California. In 1997, he enrolled in design courses at Brooks College but eventually dropped out.[3] In his early 20s, he worked in retail and sold consignment, including several tops picked by Aaliyah's stylist and worn by the singer.[2]
In the early 2000s, Kashou showcased his fashion design work in numerous seasons at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. He also received the Gen Art Alumni sponsorship and featured his collection in the tents of Bryant Park in Spring 2003.[3]
In March 2005, Kashou was commissioned to design costumes for the America’s Next Top Model ad campaign, displayed on billboards nationwide.[3]
In 2007 Kashou appeared on the fourth season of Project Runway and finished in 2nd place.[3]
Kashou made guest appearances multiple times on the Home Shopping Network, featuring exclusive designs for the show "Curations" that sold out on-air. Queen Rania of Jordan commissioned Kashou to create exclusive designs for her public appearances.[6]
In 2012 Kashou participated in the first season of Project Runway: All Stars and finished in 8th place.[6]
Kashou's designs have appeared in the pages of The New York Times Magazine,[7] Vogue,[3] Women’s Wear Daily,[7] Interview,[3] Elle,[3] InStyle,[3] Flaunt,[3] Lucky,[3] Angelino,[3] People,[3] and Us Weekly.[3]
Kashou has designed for a number of celebrities, including: Jessica Alba,[3] Fergie,[3] Tyra Banks,[3] Amy Smart,[3] Erykah Badu,[3] Lucy Liu,[3] Tracee Ellis Ross,[3] Lindsay Lohan,[3] Paris Hilton,[3] Penelope Cruz,[3] Shiva Rose,[3] Penelope Cruz,[7] Dita Von Teese,[7] Heidi Klum,[7] Paris Hilton,[7] Kim Kardashian,[7] Keri Hilson,[6] and Rihanna.[6]
In 2016, Kashou returned to Palestine to develop and market his brand to the Arab world and study the local market.[5] Some of his projects have involved cross-stitched hand embroidery by Palestinian women.[1]
Once again appearing on Project Runway during its 20th season (2023), Kashou cited inspiration from the concept of freedom of movement in contrast to his life living under military occupation.[2][8]
