Manto (Urdu: منٹو) is a 2015 Pakistani biographical drama film based on the life of Pakistani short-story writer Sadat Hassan Manto, starring Sarmad Sultan Khoosat in the title role.[4] Directed by Khoosat himself while produced by Babar Javed and written by Shahid Nadeem, whose screenplay was adapted from Manto's short stories[5] particularly Thanda Gosht, Madari, License, Hatak and Peshawar Se Lahore,[6] it also depicts his relationship with singer-actress Noor Jehan.[7] It was released on September 11, 2015, after sixty years of Manto's death.[8]
The full-length official trailer was released on August 29, 2015.[9] The motion trailer along with film music was released on August 6, 2015.[10] Initially made 2012 TV series on the life of writer entitled as Main Manto with same cast and production will be aired in December 2015.
A story of a 20th-century writer "Manto" (Sarmad Khoosat), who grew-up in the showbiz industry of Bombay (now Mumbai) and Lahore. It focuses the last seven years of writers life during which he wrote some of his most controversial stories, such as Thanda Gosht, Toba Tek Singh, License, Upar, Neechay aur Darmiyan, License and Peshawar Se Lahore. For which Manto had to face charges of obscenity thrice.[11]
The music album was released on August 6, 2015, at Blue Carpet event held at Nueplex Cinema, Karachi by distributors Geo Entertainment and Geo Films.[13][14] The soundtrack including background score, sound mixing, editing and original songs of film are composed by Jamal Rahman of True Brew Records.[15] Khoosat who hired the Jamal after listing his work for Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist, said "I want to make it yours and run with it."[16] Three of four songs are taken from famous poets including Majeed Amjad, Mirza Ghalib and Indian Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi while one song is penned down by Muhammad Hanif.[17] One song of film sung by Ustad Salamt Ali Nazar was neither revealed nor announced at the launch.[16] The soundtrack of film was praised for its classical genre, strong lyrics and soulful music composition.[18]

Initially the film was scheduled to release in late 2014 but later postponed due to delayed in post-production.[19] The first teaser trailer was released on August 6, 2015,[20] for limited special screening.[21] The official trailer was released online on August 29, 2015.[22] It was released on September 11, 2015 in Pakistan under the banners of Geo Films.[23]
In 2012 before developing a film, TV series based on the life and literary work of Saadat Hassan Manto entitled as Main Manto was made comprising total of 22 episodes with same cast and production as of film. Both film and series is directed by Sarmad Sultan Khoosat who also played the title character.[24] Playwrighter Shahid Nadeem serves as a screenwriter and Babar Javed produced the serial and film under A & B Entertainment at Geo Films. Series was scheduled to release in 2013 but it then put on hold for the film production.[25] The drama serial is expected to be aired in December 2015 after the release of film.
