Ligerz (French: Gléresse) is a municipality in the Biel/Bienne adminstrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Ligerz is first mentioned in 1236 as Ligerce.[3]
Ligerz has an area, as of 2009[update], of Template:Km2 to mi2. Of this area, Template:Km2 to mi2 or 31.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while Template:Km2 to mi2 or 50.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, Template:Km2 to mi2 or 12.8% is settled (buildings or roads), Template:Km2 to mi2 or 2.2% is either rivers or lakes and Template:Km2 to mi2 or 1.7% is unproductive land.[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 8.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.3%. 50.0% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 2.2% is pastures, while 29.4% is used for orchards or vine crops. Of the water in the municipality, 1.1% is in lakes and 1.1% is in rivers and streams. Of the unproductive areas, 1.1% is unproductive vegetation.[4]
It lies in the Bernese Seeland at the north end of Lake Biel.
Ligerz has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 545.[5] As of 2007[update], 5.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 4.3%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (90.2%), with French being second most common ( 6.3%) and English being third ( 1.2%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 33% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (21.9%), the SPS (18.3%) and the Green Party (17.2%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 19.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 61.6% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 19.2%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Ligerz about 90.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
Ligerz has an unemployment rate of 0.59%. As of 2005[update], there were 107 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 29 businesses involved in this sector. 24 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 8 businesses in this sector. 61 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 15 businesses in this sector.[6] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]

The town has a train station. There is a harbor for the Bielersee Schiffahrt Gesellschaft AG (Lake Biel ship travel company). There is also a funicular to Prêles.
