The Launceston Tornadoes are an Australian basketball team based in Launceston, Tasmania. The Tornadoes compete in the Women's NBL1 South and play their home games at Elphin Sports Centre.[1] For sponsorship reasons, they are known as the Buckby Motors Launceston Tornadoes.
The Launceston Tornadoes Basketball Club Inc was established in 1993.[2] The Tornadoes women's basketball team debuted in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) in 1994.[3][4] In their second season, the Tornadoes won the 1995 SEABL championship.[5][6][7] They went on to win the 1995 ABA National championship.[8][9][10][11] In 1996, the Tornadoes finished as ABA National runners-up.[8]
In 2010 and 2018, the Tornadoes finished as SEABL runners-up.[12][13]
In 2019, following the demise of the SEABL, the Tornadoes joined the NBL1 South.[14]
DANDENONG Rangers playing-coach Larissa Anderson praised her charges for their "amazing heart" in Saturday night's SEABL championship win over Launceston. The Lady Rangers lifted the SEABL women's trophy for just the second time after a 85-70 victory at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Dominant performances from Gabrielle Richards and Kelly Wilson have helped the Lady Braves to the 2018 SEABL Championship despite 16 threes from Launceston. Bendigo prevailed 119-96 in a high scoring contest, with both teams shooting over 50% from the field.
