Jamia Al-Karam, (Arabic: جامعة الکرم) is an Islamic institution Islamic Studies College located in Eaton in 30-acre premises.[1] The Darul Uloom is managed by Muhammad Imdad Hussain Pirzada.[2][3][4]
As per the vision of its founder it was founded to cater for the educational and social needs of British Muslims.[5] The ideology Al karam follow is south Asian Ahle Sunnat Wal Jama'at Barelvi movement with in Sunni Islam.[6]
The institute teaches Dars-e-Nizami course which is affiliated to Al Azhar University,Cairo Egypt.[2] It has gained affiliation with the oldest seat of Islamic learning, the University of Al-Azhar in Cairo, Egypt. Graduates of Jamia Al-Karam are offered admission into the third year of the University’s BA degree courses.It has produced more than 150 Islamic scholars.[7]
Graduation ceremony of 2015 - The 30th year of Jamia AL-Karam On the occasion of the 17th Annual 'Urs Conference of Zia-ul-Ummat, Justice Pir Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari, the Jamia Al-Karam class of 2015 graduated after having completed the three year Diploma in Islamic Sciences & Classical Arabic (FDIS Programme of Dars Nizami). Ten students graduated and five girls graduated forming part of the Jamia Al-Karam Alumni of Alims and Alimahs.
The institute manage a group of Al-Karam Nashid Group which performs Islamic songs on various occasions like Mawlid.[8]
It serves a center for dialogue between various communities.[9] Robert Jenrick, English Conservative Party politician and Member of Parliament (MP) for Newark, visited Jamia Al Karam and appreciated the efforts of its founder.[10]
In 1995, Jamia Al-Karam moved to its current location in Retford, Nottinghamshire, where Shaykh M I H Pirzada launched a new project, the Al-Karam Secondary School. This was a boarding school providing education up to GCSE level. The school had maintained level of education and results in a very fees whch is affordable to many.[7][11] It imparted teaching of English, Maths and Science. In addition to providing the subjects of Arabic Language, Islamic Studies, and Urdu.[12] The school was closed in summer of 2014.
Jamia Al-Karam has produced over 150 British Islamic scholars of whom 35 have further graduated from Al-Azhar University. The relationship between the two institutions goes back to 1951 when the late Justice Shaykh Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari, after who Jamia Al-Karam is named, began his studies at Al-Azhar University under the tutelage of the great scholars of Al-Azhar including Dr Ahmad Zaki, Dr Mustafa Shilbi and the prominent Imam Muhammad Abu Zahra.[13]
On Sunday 15 May 2011, the United Kingdom Branch of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates (WAAG) and the Al-Azhar Contact Office in Great Britain was inaugurated at Jamia Al-Karam in Retford, Nottinghamshire which was attended by Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (T J Winter, from the University of Cambridge and the Cambridge Muslim College), Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham, Fayyaz Gafour (COO, ARY Network) among others.[13]
Gul Muhammed, Imam and Senior lecturer at Jamia al Karam appealed ISIS to release British hostage Alan Henning and urged the militants to not commit the 'worst condemnable sin' against Islam.[14][15]
