Hsieh Hsin-Ying (Chinese: 謝欣穎; pinyin: xiè xīn yǐng, born May 1, 1985), also known as Nikki Hsieh. Hsieh is a model as well as an actress in Taiwan. Her works have expanded in different realms, such as advertising, movies, TV series, and even music. Her most known movies include Make Up, i WEiRDO, and The Assassin. As for the TV shows, she participated in Light the Night, Love @ Seventeen, and Meet Me @ 1006.

In 2006, she participated in Reflections and won the 43rd Golden Horse Award for The Best Supporting Actress. In 2013, she was shortlisted for the 48th Golden Bell Awards for Actress in Drama Program for her performance in the TV series Die Sterntaler. In 2020, she was also shortlisted for the Best Actress Award at the 57th Golden Horse Awards.

Early Life and Background

Hsieh Hsin-Ying (Chinese: 謝欣穎; pinyin: xiè xīn yǐng), also known as Nikki Hsieh, was born on May 1, 1985, in cijin island in Kaohsiung city in Taiwan.[1][2] Hsieh has stepped into the acting career since she was at the age of 16. As the oldest sister in her family, Hsieh owns three siblings. Since childhood, her parents have always told her that she needs to rely on herself for a better life, as a result, she has been working hard to support herself. With this notion, Hsieh firmly sticks to her own ideas and will not change her choice regardless of other people's suggestions or objections.[3]

Education

Hsieh majored in the Department of Beautification and Cosmetology in DaoJiang High School of Nursing & Home Economics. In order to have a steady source of income, Hsieh had decided to drop out of school and started a modeling career at her eleventh grade.[4][4]

Personal Hobbies

After Hsieh went to Green Island and Taitung to film Love across the sea directed by Rock Records In Love in 2015, she fell in love with the slow pace of life even more.[5] The dog, Hsieh had raised since she was 20 years old, passed away in June 2022. By this sorrowful incident, Hsieh comprehended the matter of life and death and said 'No matter what I do, I focus on every little thing as if it were the first and only time.'[6] Hsieh relayed her favorite directors are Pedro Almodóvar Caballero, whose works are incredibly powerful and colorful, because she doesn't like to be restricted. Moreover, Hirokazu Koreeda(Japanese:これえだ ひろかず), Miike Takashi(Japanese:みいけ たかし), and Stanley Kubrick are also directors she admires.[7]

Career

Back in the time when Hsieh was a high school student, she was working in a small Japanese shop in Gongguan commercial district, and a self-proclaimed star agent approached her to join the modeling industry. Hsieh, who was only 15 years old, thought it was a deceptive trick and ignored it. The agent didn't give up convincing her to give it a try, and in the end, Hsieh's mother kept company with her to sign the appointment which is up to 8 years. In 2015, Hsieh worked as a graphic model and was cast by the director Hsiao Hsien Hou.[8] [9]And Hsieh's first film "My Whispering Plan" was cast by the director Yu Ning Chu(Chinese:瞿友寧). However, she did not definite herself as an actress until she played the role in Reflections (Chinese: 愛麗絲的鏡子), which won her the Golden Horse Award for the Best Supporting Actress in 2006.[10]

2003-2008

Before starting her acting career, she worked as an advertising model. The turning point to make Hsieh become an actress is when she got acquainted with the director Hsiao-hsien Hou when filming the advertisemet キリンビバレッジ 聞茶 (Janpan KIRIN 聞茶).[11]In 2006, she participated in the movie Reflections and won the Best Supporting Female Actor Award at the 43th Golden Horse Award.[12]

2009-2014

In 2010, Hsieh participated in the movies Honey Pupu and Make Up. These two movies won her the Best Female Actor at the 13th Taipei Film Festival.[13] Besides, the movie Make Up also won her the Best Female Actor at the 10th Far East Film Festival[14]. In 2012, Hsieh participated in the TV show Die Sterntaler which  adapted from the classic Japanese drama Die Sterntaler. As a female leading actor, Hsieh was nominated for Best Actor at the 48th Golden Bell Award.[15]

2015-2020

In 2015, she participated in the swordsmen film The Assassin[16] which was directed by Hsiao-Hsien Hou and was selected by Festival De Cannes.[18] [19] [20]In 2019, Hsieh participated in Til Death Do Us Part as a supporting actress, and she was nominated for the 55rd Golden Bell Awards for the Mini-Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress Award. In 2020, the movie I Weirdo featured Hsieh in the lead role. This movie is the first movie in Asia that was filmed with an iPhone. Additionally, the movie I Weirdo, and  Hsieh was nominated at the 57th Golden Horse Award and 23rd Taipei Film Festival for Best Female Actor.[17] In the interview, Hsieh mentioned that she found herself enjoying being an actress when filming the movie I Weirdo.

2021- now

In the TV Show Light the Night aired on Netflix in 2021, Hsieh participated as one of the supporting actors.[18] Her character calledYuli", a seemingly quiet and mysterious hostess working in a popular Japanese night club located in the red light district in 1980s Taipei. Although she often looked lukewarm in the club, she could always hit the bullseye in the comments.[19] In addition to her performance, the interlude of Light the Night was sung by Hsieh and another supporting actor, Po Chieh Wang.

Describing off-screen Hsieh, most people describe her as an outgoing, energetic and mature woman. Lego Lee(Chinese:李國毅), who cooperated with Hsieh in acting works three times, expressed his appreciation for Hsieh's strengths: being herself, being real and kind, and willing to share with everyone.[20] Another actor, Kang Ren Wu(Chinese:吳慷仁), once mentioned that he considered Hsieh to be maturer than she was before, because she used to put up a long face as somethings did not go in her way. Wen Wen Kai also mentioned that Hsieh was capable of talking eloquently to those newly acquinted, concentrated on every question with sincerity in every word she uttered.[21]

The acting style she hopes

Hsieh relayed that she didn't restrict herself in any acting style. That is to say, she  is accepting and willing to try all kinds of characters. "Forget Myself" is another higher realm, Hsieh considered, she is not afraid to fall into a state of madness and cannot withdraw herself from the role. Instead, she enjoys the feeling of immersing herself  in the roles she played.[22]

Personal Life

In 2009, Hsieh got along with Shihua Liang who is a trendy brand designer.  After seven years, in 2016, Hsieh broke up with him because he was having an affair.[23]After one year, Hsieh got along with Mr. D, who have known each other for nearly 10 years. After dating for more than 1 year, they broke up  and returned to friendship.[24] In 2019,  Po Chieh Wang and Hsieh got acquainted because of the TV series, Light the Night.[25]

With her care for children, Hsieh is a contributor to the World Vision in Taiwan. In 2023, Hsieh acts as the ambassador of World Vision Taiwan, calling on enriching children's diet by meal coupon subscription.[26]Furthermore, she serves as the public welfare ambassador of the Down Syndrome Foundation to promote their right to work .[27]
