The GAZ-MM is a medium-duty truck produced at the Gorki Auto Plant from 1938 to 1948, and then at the Ulyanovsky Auto Plant, up to 1956.[1] The truck was a modernized and simplified variant of the GAZ-AA, but used the engine from the GAZ-M1, upgrading the vehicle's power to 50 hp.[2][3]

In fact, the GAZ-MM was just a designation of the strengthened 50 hp engine, introduced in 1938, while in factory documents these trucks were still designated as GAZ-AA.[4] This name is especially used to describe a simplified wartime model, produced from the beginning of 1942. In some series there were no doors, front brakes, front bumpers, front stamped fenders were replaced with plain welded ones, and only one headlight remained. From mid-1942 the trucks had wooden doors, with sliding parts of windows.[4]

The GAZ-MM engine, alongside some other mechanical parts, were also used in the GAZ-64 and 67 jeeps until 1953, and also in the BA-64 military vehicle.
