Fate/strange Fake is a Japanese light novel series in Type-Moon's Fate franchise, written by Ryōgo Narita and illustrated by Morii Shizuki.[1]
It was originally placed on Narita's homepage under the title of "Fake/states night" on April 1, 2008, presented as a prologue and introduction for a role playing style game as an April Fool's prank. The text was taken down after April Fool's, but was later re-released in the form of a novel included as an extra with the magazine TYPE-MOON Ace 2 in 2009, with illustrations by Morii Shizuki and an afterword by the author.[1]
In 2014, it was announced that both a novel and manga series would be published and a brief trailer was made. An anime television film adaptation produced by A-1 Pictures titled Fate/strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn premiered in July 2023. An anime television series adaptation also produced by A-1 Pictures has been announced.
The story centers around a Grail War faultily copied from the Third Holy Grail War in Fuyuki. After the end of the third Grail War, an organization from the United States that has magi separate from the London-based Mage Association as members took data from Fuyuki's Grail War and planned their own ritual. After seventy years, they used the city Snowfield as the Sacred Land for their own Grail War. They were unable to successfully copy every aspect of the ritual, which led to it acting only as an imitation that has lost the Saber class and allowed for the summoning of strange Servants due to the definition of a "hero" being blurred.
The Mage's Association has sent Rohngall and his pupil, Faldeus, to investigate the city and the status of the war. Faldeus, a spy from the US organization, has Rohngall sniped upon arrival, despite knowing that Rohngall was simply a puppet. He announces that their Holy Grail War has been in development and that it is real, which causes an uproar at the Clock Tower, and wishes to "advertise" the project to the Association.[1]
As of February 2023, the series was released only in Japanese; no English release has been announced.

Some time after the Fifth Holy Grail War, the Mage Association learns of a group of rogue Mages attempting to create a Fake Holy Grail War in the city of Snowfield in the United States, masterminded by the rogue Mage Faldeus. As Lord El-Melloi II contemplates how to handle this situation, his apprentice Flat Escardos heads to Snowfield to participate in the War without his permission so he can witness what the Holy Grail looks like. Upon arriving in Snowfield, he manages to summon the Beserker-class Servant Jack the Ripper. Meanwhile, Gilgamesh is summoned and allows the young Native American girl Tiné Chelc to be his Master after slaying the mage who originally summoned him, as she seeks to take back her tribe's ancestral lands from the Mages. Assassin kills the Mage that summoned her, but he revives himself and becomes obsessed with breaking her religious faith. A young girl named Tsubaki manages to summon a spirit-like Servant despite being in a coma. The police chief of Snowfield uses Caster to arm his elite unit Clan Calatin with copies of Noble Phantasms. An insane Mage's own wolf familiar is able to summon Enkidu who drives the intended Master away (who is then killed by Faldeus who catches him and executes him for his actions). Gilgamesh and Enkidu sense each other's presences and start a battle to settle their ancient rivalry. However, upon realizing they've attracted the attention of the other Servants, they both agree to eliminate them first before they continue their battle. All of the Fake Grail War participants are left in awe at the sheer power Gilgamesh and Enkidu can wield. Elsewhere, another Mage tries to find a way to resolve the Fake Grail War, which threatens to destroy the world, and decides to put his hopes on an "Intruder". Back in Snowfield, an armored Servant just summoned asks a young girl if she is his Master; but she denies it, stating that she doesn't want to play the role assigned to her. |
